"For All Mankind" has been renewed for Season 5 at Apple TV+. In addition, Variety has learned the streamer has ordered a spinoff series focusing on the Soviet space program.
The spinoff is currently titled "Star City" and hails from "For All Mankind" creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi. Nedivi and Wolpert will serve as showrunners. The show will return to the beginning of "For All Mankind's" alternative timeline, in which the Soviets are the first to reach the moon. But the show will then "explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward," per the official logline.
"Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of 'For All Mankind,'" said Wolpert and Nedivi. "The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race. We could not be more excited to continue building out the alternate history universe of 'For All Mankind' with our partners at Apple and Sony."
Both "Star City" and "For All Mankind" are executive produced by Moore, Wolpert, and Nedivi. Moore executive produces via Tall Ship Productions along with Maril Davis. Both shows are produced by Sony Pictures Television. David Weddle, Bradley Thompson, Seth Edelstein, and Kira Snyder are also executive producers on "For All Mankind," with Wolpert and Nedivi serving as showrunners.
"With each new season, 'For All Mankind' continues to build out a fascinating world and capture global audiences through high quality storytelling that has been so skillfully developed by Ron, Matt and Ben," said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. "There is so much to explore and, we along with our partners at Sony, can't wait to dive into this next chapter of the engrossing 'For All Mankind' universe."

NORDFRIESLAND, DEUTSCHLAND
the first 4-5 episodes of last season was very bad but i enjoyed the rest of the season after. Some of the script writing in first half of the season was giving me Aaron Sorkin/The Newsroom feeling and I hate that shit

I trust Ronald D. Moore more or less, but I'm not in the mood for a show set in Russia right now, not even a fictional Russia.

The renewal seems pretty late considering when season 4 aired. Feels like we'll be waiting a while.

I'm so curious how they handle the Soviet spinoff, the internal politics of their alt-USSR have always felt underbaked and if they get really thoughtful and creative it could be super interesting

It really is amazing watching the slow build up from pre space program to colonization of mars. Makes you think about what could have been with the real life space program if United States didn't land on the moon first and the Soviet Union didn't collapse. Excited for next season . Are they gonna go Star Trek ?

Going to be very interested to see how they write themselves away from the infuriatingly stupid ending of Season 4.

Haven't watched season 4 yet. Do they hint at the colonization of Europa at the end? When season 3 was revealed to focus on mars, I figured that we'd get two seasons of mars (just like we got two seasons of the moon), and then two last seasons for Europa (seasons 5 and 6). Dunno if that is what will end up happening.

My wife and I started watching this show at the end of February. We're now 2 episodes away from starting season 4. It's rare I can get my wife to watch an hourlong drama, so we're spending a lot more time together, though I suspect a new season of Drag Race / Love is Blind is right around the corner to ruin everything for me again.

I liked season 4 but hopefully season 5 has more crazy space stuff. It was mostly just scheming on the ground on Mars.

It did seem like they were spinning their wheels with not expanding past Mars. I guess maybe they were confident they'd get another season to go crazy with space exploration.

The mining aspect was a good backdrop though.

I definitely don't think the Season 4 finale lived up to the expectations set by the rest of the season, but hey, I'm all for more. It's definitely unique enough.

It makes sense for the show to develop a bigger and possibly independent Mars colony to to be the base of further space exploration but as a TV show it was lacking exciting sequences for me. What's-her-face hanging off the back of the ship in the finale didn't do it for me.

So far the show has been pretty great. Season 3 being the closest to a low point with all the odd Karen storylines. Season 1 > 2=4 > 3 IMO.

Also season 4 was definitely giving STRONG BSG vibes at times, especially during the Union strike episode. Hoping they lean even further into the BSG-ness.

Agreed there, first two seasons were definitely the best at the intense space sequences.

Probably my favorite show on TV right now. It's corny at moments but I love it.

FInally! And Foundation?

Apple recently (March 21) posted some of the new hires for Season 3. I'm not sure if S3 production actually restarted in March like they said it would.

California for now
That's good news but seeing that I stopped at season 3 once it became about this whack job billionaire and showing up how a billionaires can solve the issues by ignoring regulations and testing I'm just curious if it's something I should continue on..

And yes I am very aware of all the ridiculous drama and making Ed to be the superhero because they need a white lead to be the guy who does everything... -_-

Season 4 was awesome. Made even more so with the almost complete lack of the two idiot brothers.

Been waiting for this renewal for a while so my week is made.

I'm so excited for more of this! I was really worried it might get the can because I don't feel like it gets a lot of viewership despite how cool it is outside of the 2 Stevens brothers.

Dev is...a tricky character. The show has not quite interrogated his billionaire status or position as a private actor in the way that you're looking for, but Season 4 does lean into him being a weird freak and a fervent true believer that's at least interesting

I'm more concerned for Foundation (which I personally prefer). I know it's getting a third season and all, but the production issues for season three sound pretty bad. Hopefully, it's a big blip, and not a sign that Apple is decreasingly interested in a fourth.

Looking forward to Star City… wonder if we'll see all sorts of Russian rocket malfunctions and mishaps on their way to landing on the moon.

Honestly, (for me) 50s/60s alternate space history is far more interesting than the post-moon landing, budget-cut era of space travel.

If the show wants to get really out there, it would have to jump 30 - 50 years which means getting an entirely new cast. They're starting to bump up against what's technologically possible, kind of like the real world did after the moon landing.

They develop the technology to put the human mind in a brand new body and Ed is the first successful test subject.
