Only two books read this month. It took me quite a while to recover from my jet lag on coming back from my holiday. For around two weeks, every time I got in bed I'd fall asleep straight away. Great for my sleep, but not so great for my reading.

February update:

chrominance - 5/50 books | 7/50 movies

Books:

  • Agency by William Gibson
  • Inversions by Iain M. Banks

Movies:

  • The Zone of Interest (2023)
  • Poor Things (2023)
  • Elemental (2023)
  • Perfect Days (2023)

On the book front, things are a little slow. I think I enjoyed Inversions more than Agency; it's a pretty neat Culture book in that it's not about the Culture at all, and yet knowledge of the Culture feels mandatory to really understand what's going on in it. I mostly read a chapter or two of a book before bed, so maybe at this rate I won't make 50, but that's okay; this is still way more books than I've read in years.

Lots of catching up on last year in terms of movies (though technically Perfect Days didn't get wide release here until earlier this month). Not a bad movie in the bunch; I appreciated them all for completely different reasons, and I'd happily recommend all of them.

Not Asleep - 7/50 Books | 13/50 Movies

Books

  1. Opinions - Roxane Gay ★★★★
  2. Extremely Online - Taylor Lorenz ★★★★
  3. More Than I Had Imagined - John Blake ★★★

Movies
  1. They Called Him Mostly Harmless (2024) ★★★★
  2. Brief Tender Light (2024) ★★★
  3. Swiss Army Man (2016) ★★★★1/2

I think it wants to be profound but even if it isn't, Swiss Army Man (directed by the Daniels) was delightfully bizarre and unpredictable. It was so over the top and creative and just WENT FOR IT. Absolutely worth the watch.

I'm such a fan of Daniel Radcliffe because he makes such strange choices. He did the big starring role thing as a kid and now as an adult he takes all the off-beat roles. And it seems like he's having a blast.

Lately I've been watching more TV, so books especially have fallen by the wayside. It doesn't help that I'm not really sure what I want to read next; I've been going through the Culture series but I kind of want a break, but have nothing else on deck really. Movies are mostly keeping pace at least.

Count me in, I guess. I've started walking to work, which affords me some extra time for audiobooks. And starting yesterday, I intend to watch one movie per day all the way through July... gonna be working my way through the Bond franchise in release order, with a smattering of non-Bond movies from the same time periods mixed in to help break things up a bit. I'll treat this as my "March" update, so what I watched yesterday will be saved for next month's update.

Lots of horror and comedy, since that's what my girlfriend likes. Dungeons and Dragons being the only one I chose that we watched together. Despite it being my "nerd movie" she liked it. Kind of funny watching Scary Movie and then Scream, because it makes everything in Scream 1 and 2 more comedic instead of gruesome.

  11. The Married Woman (1964)
  12. Thunderball (1965)
  13. For a Few Dollars More (1965)
  14. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
  15. Sing a Song of Sex (1967)
  16. Casino Royale (1967)
  17. Deliverance (1972)
  18. You Only Live Twice (1967)
Movies (Not counted towards total):
  1. Dr. No (1962, Rewatch)
  2. Breakdown (1997, Rewatch)
  3. The Professor (1967, Short film)
  4. Alphaville (1965, DNF)
Took a bit of a break from my "movie a day" goal, but still making solid progress on that front. Definitely need to pick up the pace with books if I hope to reach the target of 50 though.

If anyone's curious about my Bond rankings so far, I would say that my favorite is Goldfinger and my least favorite is surprisingly not Casino Royale but in fact Thunderball.

I really need to get back on the book bandwagon. I've been playing a lot of games in my spare time instead. Went all the way through Animal Well and now on to Axiom Verge 2. I've also been listening to a lot of music at work instead of normally listening to an audiobook.

Edit - I forgot a movie. Godzilla x Kong, it really was unmemorable.

LazyLain - 6/50 Books | 33/50 Movies

Books:
  1. Filthy Rich, by James Patterson
  2. Unmasked, by Paul Holes
Movies:
  1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
  2. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
  3. Live and Let Die (1973)
  4. The Man With the Golden Gun (1974)

Slow progress this month, though I did at least keep chipping away at Bond. OHMSS was really good, Diamonds Are Forever wasn't (though not as bad as Thunderball), and Live and Let Die/The Man With the Golden Gun were just fine but pretty fun.

I'm doing pretty good this year around. I have read minimum of 200 pages a week, but I probably average way higher. Overall 25 books read so far. Half of them Star Trek books that are most of the time fun and quick reads. But soon as my vacation starts my book count will slow down since I'll start reading more difficult and/or longer books.

haven't kept track of my watched movies, probably less then 10.

I'm back! I actually have been thinking a lot about this thread and getting back into it, the only reasons I haven't had any updates since February:
  • I spent like 250 hours in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth for a few months, which used up most of what would have been my movie watch time
  • Work has been bonkers (which used up the remainder of my normal movie time)
  • I *HAVE* been reading, but I've been re-reading the Wheel of Time books in full from when I was much younger to catch up to where I left off; they're huge books and I've read the ones I'm on before so I can't count them for this challenge. I just got to the first one that's new for me so I should have some activity coming up for June on that front. Looking forward to getting to count these as two books for the challenge lol

I still have little faith that I'm hitting 50 Books, but I have been reading more (against just doesn't count for the challenge) and I did finally buy a Kindle and I already have a small library on there from a variety of sources; so I'm hoping to hit at least 25 books which will be way up from the 0 books I've read the last several years.
