1. Apex Legends (PC - January 4th - 15 hours (and still going up) - 9/10)

Still play this one from time to time. Managed to reach my goal of getting all achievements on Steam this year, so that's where I drew the "completion" line. Will very likely add a lot more hours this year because it's so much fun. I was pretty pessimistic on this game at first because it's really, really, reeaalllyy hard at first. But the changes they've made the past 2 seasons plus me getting better at the game have upped my excitment for the game by quite a lot. Very solid and fun Battle Royale

2. Summer Heat Beach Volleyball (PS2 - January 5th - 20 hours - 6.5/10)

At the end of 2020 I bought and moved into my first house. In one room I set-up an old CRT and hooked up all my old consoles and such. After hooking it up I of course wanted to try my hand at playing some old games. This one popped up for nostalgia reasons and I've cleared the story mode for it. It's a surprisingly fun volleyball game with a decent amount of depth. I enjoyed my time with it but it started to get a bit same-y and the extra modes are pretty boring. Solid fundamentals but could use a bit more variety!

3. Mega Man (PC - January 6th - 2 hours - 6/10)

Watching the Mega Man block of AGDQ ignited that Mega Man itch for me. Decided to get both Mega Man Legacy Collections the very last hour of the Steam Sale (good timing by AGDQ). Started with the very first one of course! It's short and sweet and I always enjoy the little playthrough of it, but it's never something spectacular. Solid, quick and fun

4. Mega Man 2 (PC - January 6th - 3 hours - 7/10)

Managed to also complete number two on the same day as 1. Not much to say here except 1 but more polished. Solid, quick and fun

5. Mega Man 3 (PC - January 7th - 4 hours - 4/10)

I don't know what it is with MM3, but it really didn't synergize with me. In a lot of the stages I didn't even try to navigate through the enemies and opted for "fuck it I'll take the damage and boost through the enemies". Some really weird and cheapenemy placement. I know, most MM's can have super cheap deaths but it felt like they upped the ante with this one. I was happy to be done with MM3 at the end of it and was questioning if I was already getting soured on playing through the collection. The added slide was a nice addition to the series though.

6. Mega Man 4 (PC - January 10th - 3 hours - 7/10)

MM4 confirmed to me that I wasn't getting soured on Mega Man just yet. It feels like the more entries in the series, the more outlandish the robot masters become and I love it. The addition of the charge shot is, like the slide, a great addition to Mega Man's arsenal. Overal this one just brought me more joy and less frustration, a return to form!

7. Mega Man 5 (PC - January 11th - 3 hours - 6.5/10)

More of the same, nothing really groundbreaking got added, just some more fun

8. Mega Man 6 (PC - January 11th - 3 hours - 6.5/10)

Same as MM5, another solid game and a good last entry into the NES catalogue.

9. Mega Man Legacy Collection (PC - January 16th - 25 hours - 8/10)

The legacy collection has added challenges for all of the 6 Mega Man games with some of these challenges being mash-ups between different Mega Man games. I decided to tackle these too and considering the amount of time I spend on these challenges (which is almost the same or even more than I spend on the individual games) I'm going to count it as a game. I have to say, I had a lot of fun with the challenges. Due to the short, arcade-like, structure of them you get a lot more room to experiment with certain strategies. Now you don't have to worry about 3 lives and start all over again, you have unlimited tries to fuck around a bit and find the most optimal paths. It gave me an added appreciation of certain parts of a level and especially the robot masters. Some of these challenges were really hard and make you realise how much you can cheese robot masters with their weakness. Some of these robot masters with buster only seem impossible at first, but it feels so good to put in the grind to master them and beat them, looking at you Shadow Man).

10. Mega Man 7 (PC - January 20th - 5 hours - 2/10)

Hated this game, mega man is big and lanky, the robots are even bigger and lankier, everything is slow and takes ages. You can just buy your way to victory if needed. The jumps feel weird due to the increase in size of Mega Man.

11. Mega Man 8 (PC - January 23th - 7 hours - 6/10)

Just like MM7 this game is kinda bad, but at least this game has a unique charm to it. The levels and settings are filled with new ideas, especially the level design can get really creative. On the flipside of that is the super frustrating "what were they thinking" levels like everything snowboaring. It's really a rollercoaster of high highs and extreme lows. There's something about early PS1 games and voice acting which makes it so bad it's good, but I guess MM8 missed the memo. The voice acting and cutscenes are embarrassingly bad, but at least it made for funny moments. Don't even get me started on the robot masters. "I'm Aquaman, but you can call me handsome guy" ????. Whereas MM7 was just trying to be like the NES games with a graphical update, MM8 is actually trying to do something new.

1: Kingdom Hearts: Re Chain of Memories. End: 1/6/2021. (2/5)

Beginning this challenge with a game I didn't complete in 2020. I'd played the original CoM years ago, but never tried out the remake. I didn't much care for it. It's biggest flaw is it wears the KH skin, but doesn't play like a KH game.

This seems like a good way to get me to try some of the shorter indie games I've been meaning to play, although I'm sure I'll end up mostly playing long JRPGs instead.

Edit: Huh, I actually got there.

Completed: 52/52

First game down. Hoping I can clear out the backlog of stuff I bought around black friday before all the big games I'm interested in drop in a month or two.

main post

1. VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action (Switch, 10 hours) Jan 7

Starting off the year with a good Cyberpunk game. Just a really cozy game with nice art and an amazing soundtrack that made me feel a great range of emotions.

You play as Jill Stingray, a bartender working at a bar called Valhalla, mixing drinks for customers and chatting with them inside and outside the bar. Sounds simple on the surface but you start getting to know the regulars and having to remember what drinks they liked, what type of drink would best fit their current mood and such. There is an overarching story that comes in to play as Jill has her own problems to deal with so seeing her and the characters grow throughout was great.

Reserving. First year participating!
1. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (PC) | 7th Jan - 5hrs | 4/5
2. River City Girls (PC) | 10th Jan - 7hrs | 4/5
3. Battletoads (PC) | 12th Jan - 6hrs | 2/5
4. Carrion
5. Cyber Shadow (PC) | 8th Feb - 8hrs | 5/5
6. Control Ultimate Edition (PS5) | 18th Feb - | 4/5
7. Destruction All Stars (PS5)
8. Phasmophobia (Steam)

3. Battletoads (PC) | 12th Jan - 6hrs | ★★☆☆☆
header.jpg

Battletoads suffers from a serious identity crisis that just fails to deliver any kind of magic or nostalgia for me… except for the rocket bike segments. Childhood nightmares came back full swing. I was expecting a Beat 'Em Up, but the second half is just mini-game after mini-game: platformer, QTE puzzle Olympic, and then a space shooter, only to be tossed into the home stretch for one final Beat' Em Up brawl with the last boss.

2. River City Girls (PC) | 9th Jan - 7hrs | ★★★★☆
header.jpg

River City Girls was so much fun to play. A nice blend of free-roaming brawler and RPG elements keeps gameplay interesting while you're trying to master combos and smash some faces. Everything has a charm that sucks you in with its art style, AMAZING music, and fun boss battles. There are some nice surprises and cameos peppered through the game that will keep you excited while playing. My only complaint is that controls and combat felt a little clunky at times. Still, loads of fun and worth a play if you haven't picked it up.

1. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (PC) | 7th Jan - 5hrs | ★★★★☆
header.jpg

ZANGETSU!!! This game is essentially a modernized take on Dracula's Curse, with a forgiving difficulty. You unlock Simon Belmont's daughter, Sypha's grandfather, and Alucard's long lost cousin to help defeat demons. The gameplay is great, the music is killer, and the boss fights are memorable. After you beat the game, you unlock a new NIGHTMARE mode that changes up the boss fights and unlocks a completely new final boss! I really enjoyed my playthroughs of the game and I HIGHLY recommend playing the game in NIGHTMARE mode for a really cool final boss showdown.

5. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Knuckles playthrough)

I hardly ever play as Knuckles in the classic Sonic games so for this year I figure...why not, I'm due for giving the muscle flexin' Tachyglossidae a playthrough.
Turns out I'm so used to playing through these games as Sonic that Knux's smaller jump height against bosses messes up my rhythm :V Non the less I managed to clear the game in the end. I generally forget about what hazards are in most stages so i end up losing rings to some bs traps :S
Regardless, in spite of my skill, I still think that this game is the best 16-bit era platformer between the big 2. ...tieing with Ristar and Sonic 2 at least :V

Sure I'll try this year.

Video Review
2. Nexomon: Extinction (7.5/10) A decent pokemon clone. Apparently the prequel was mobile only but this one is console only? Anyway its a good game if you like the pokemon formula. Definitely can tell it was made by people who like the pokemon games but wanted more of a classic experience and higher difficulty. There are a lot of in jokes and forth wall breaking lines though for those who like or don't like that. Still the creature design varies a lot but the mechanics are there. The world is pretty charming as well but it does feel budget. Looking forward to a 3rd game with more quality of life changes and I think this could be a nice little indie franchise. My last full day of vacation so will be slowing down from now sadly.

Video Review
1. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (8/10) - My first Ys game to finish to completion after playing various amounts of others. It was a great game that I really enjoyed. Turned me on to the franchise from now on. It got a bit long winded near the end but I loved the fast pace of exploration and feeling of always moving forward not to mention the satisfying combat involving mashing and timing dodges and blocks. Maybe will try others in the series later this year.

2. Operencia: The Stolen Sun (PS4)

I love first person DRPGs. Admittedly, I haven't played a lot of western drpgs, but seeing how Operencia was on sale I could not pass up the opportunity. Some jank aside (buggy movement, a certain boss fight causing my game to crash 3 times and some iffy voice acting) I found myself rather enjoying this game. It's a lot more story heavier than I expected, and I was surprised that the party members weren't just generic characters. The 21 hours I spent with this game were well worth it. The only downside is that now I'm itching to purchase Bard's Tale IV and give it a go.

1. Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise - 5/10

I initially had a very pleasant time with the sequel to Swery's cult hit Deadly Premonition. Yes, technically the game is very rough and it doesn't look too hot but I liked the premise of the story and the characters I met along the way. That's also the part where the game hits its stride, in interacting with the people who inhabit the world and discovering their quirky personalities. Sadly the story never really gets going and while the game is charming in its own way, it doesn't really reach the heights of the original game while all of its faults (poor combat, technical issues, fetch quests, long loading screens, ...) are still there. I'd say it's still worth experiencing if you liked the original game but definitely play that one first.

PnC games of the 2000s really have not aged well...at least many of them don't IMHO. This being one of them. I tend to not let puzzles bother me much in a PnC game as to me their presentation, characters, story and humor help carry them for me and this game failed at that. I had gotten it a long time ago mainly because I was more open minded and a huge PnC fan (still am!), so I decided to clear it from my backlog. Well I also don't see myself replaying it anytime again in the future :V
At the very least its PS2-era visuals are nice for the most part.

7. Sonic Pocket Adventure
Sonic_The_Hedgehog_-_Pocket_Adventure.png

Another Sonic game cleared in celebration of its 30th anniversary this year. An overall easy game, even Eggman's boss fights are on the easy side of things. The last half of zones in the game got some BS enemies that make me wish the game had a widescreen hack to be able to anticipate them in advance to be able to jump or spin dash to destroy them and not take damage.
....still I enjoy it and it remains among my fav. Sonic Games.

5. Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers (PS4) | 1/7/2021 | 1 hr | 4/5
Part of the Disney Afternoon Collection, I first played this back in the early 90s, but never beat it. I finally went back to it and beat it and man was it great. I thought the gameplay and level design was great and fun. The music really brought me back to playing the for the first time. Highly recommended.

6. Puyo Puyo Tetris (Switch) | 1/8/2021 | 17 hrs | 4.5/5
I received the sequel as a gift and decided to sit down and get through the Adventure mode of the first one. I thought the anime-like story was hilarious and the gameplay is amazing. It does get really tough in the last stage and I really struggled with the Puyo levels. On the next to last stage, it finally clicked and I dominated. The regular modes are also fun and it's a blast to play online or in person with friends and family.

7. Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers 2 (PS4) | 1/8/2021 | 50 mins | 3.5/5
This was originally a very late NES game that I never played back in the day. The game is graphically better than the original, but the music doesn't seem as good. The gameplay is more of the same. I can't seem to put a finger on it, but feels like a downgrade from the original.

Probably won't get near 52, but who knows.

1. Fractured Minds (Xbox Series X) | Jan 7th - 30 minutes | 3/5
I could relate to some scenarios. For some reason it made me dizzy. The game is very, very basic but it has it's charm. It is also extremely short so I'd encourage everyone to give it a try.

2. Carto (Xbox Series X) | Jan 18th - 7 hours | 4/5
Cute little puzzle game, a great palate cleanser with a lovely story. Some puzzles I think are a bit not logical but it might just be me.

3. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo Switch) | Jan 24th - 10 hours | 5/5
My GOAT is still GOAT. Did the complete 120 stars challenge. I always have an absolute blast playing it despite its age.

4. Paratopic (PC) | Feb 13th, 1 hour | 4/5
A short and cool looking horror game, although I gotta be honest, I didn't get it.

5. Hitman 3 (Xbox Series X) | Feb 22nd, 9 hours | 4/5
I liked this game a lot, Berlin and Chongquing are the highlights.

6. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (Xbox Series X) | March 4th, 8 hours | 5/5
A dated but still very fun game. One of my all time favorites although it has many evident flaws.

7. The Last of Us Part II (PlayStation 4) | April 13th | 27 hours | 4/5
I liked it but drags for 8 hours.

8. Apex Legends Season 8 Battle Pass (PC) | May 2nd | too many hours | 3/5

9. Resident Evil Village (Xbox Series X) | May 12th | 10 hours | 5/5

8. Sonic & Knuckles (Knuckles playthrough)
b1141dede7ce1c01737dbbec6b660fde.png

I'd forgotten how short Knuckles' route was in this game, as he doesn't go onto Death Egg Zone.
This is mainly because Knux route takes place after Sonic defeats Eggman and is just the Egg Robo just doing what it's programmed to do :V
Still hate Sandopolis, that's one Zone I gotta look up its maps in the future and memorize a better path across it.

1. BRAINPIPE: A Plunge to Unhumanity - 0.5 hours
Well, and the first game that I finished in 2021 is this weird psychedelic runner where you just fly toward the trippy tube with obstacles and try to collect glyphs for more points. It's pretty old and has only 10 levels, not a big fan of that type of games but at least I beat it in one sitting.

8. Duck Tales (PS4) | 1/9/2021 | 1 hr | 3.5/5
Next in the Disney Afternoon Collection is Duck Tales. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I liked the various locations and the "open-world" of the levels. The music is great as well. I never played this back in the day but I think I would have loved it.

9. Talespin (PS4) | 1/9/2021 | 1 hr | 2.5/5
This is probably one of the the worst games of the Disney games on the NES/SNES. The controls are very stiff and it makes it very tough to maneuver. The idea about switching directions is a good one, but it is implemented poorly and causes issues trying to line up your shots. The music is probably the best thing about this game.

I've had this bullet hell shoot'em up in my gog library for a few years now and figured it was high time I tried it out.
Overall I quite enjoyed it and it has a lovely soundtrack too. Alas the character designs are attrocious which doesn't help when every bloody female character in this game has their clothings destroyed during cutscenes and boss battles for the sake of titillation (Shame break? Friggin' hell....)
Thankfully much of this stupidness can be negated by disabling them in Options.
If you can look past the anime-ness of the game, and focus on its shoot'em-up gameplay, you're bound to enjoy it.

An OK-ish pnc adventure game. Despite being under the Sierra banner, dying has you continue from before the death scene occured which is a blessing when considering their traditional game design from the 80s.
The biggest positives of this game to me are its visuals and the music. Voice acting is good but the writing...could've been better? In that regard it is a product of its time. It feels like an 80s cartoon that was made a decade too late, but it can appeal to younger audience of the time at least.
Speaking of which, the animation in this game is pretty choppy and not very smooth most of the time.

2.Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition - Switch - 9/25/2020 -> 1/9/2021

finally finished it up, loved the QoL changes. made completing the side quests so much easier, spent time playing on both my docked switch and switch lite, the new switch online feature made it much easier to switch between them thanks to now auto syncing the save files between the two

might come back for future connected later, played a bit of it, but something feels off with the english dub, especially melia

I thought so too. I think it's because the original was 10 years ago and that long since they played the characters. I'm shocked Jenna Coleman came back because she has become a higher profile actor since 2011.

2. Bugsnax - 7/10

Very cute game that makes the most of its premise without outstaying its welcome. I liked how catching every Bugsnak was a small puzzle in and of itself and I must say that the story and writing was also fairly well done. There were a handful of grumpuses that really annoyed me but the characters and side quests were overall pretty good. I started this game back in December when the performance was still very rough but it seems that they largely fixed that now. Still, I would expect a PS5 game either to look a bit better or run better. Bunger bunger.

01 | Morels: The Hunt

PC Steam | Jan 09 | 44 hrs | 4/5

A game about hunting and collecting mushrooms, namely morels. Fun and (for the most part) chill experience. You collect morels to earn points, which lets you travel and upgrade gear. You can even purchase travel methods, like my horse.

It's an ambitious game made by a small group of brothers. You can tell by the game updates and feedback that they care about this project. I did experience a couple of bugs; but I have emailed their support and they have been kind and patient.

You can't kill or harm the animals. The predators can attack you, but there's no gory or bloody details. There's not much to interact with in the environments other than picking up mushrooms and taking photographs. I loved taking pictures and you can look through your Polaroid photos in a book.

The zones showcase different ecos around the USA. The attention to detail is superb. The textures on the ground, rocks, and trees and foliage look amazing. It felt I was truly walking through a Midwest farm to a Redwood forest.

The game does look realistic with shadows and bright sunlight. However, I do wish there was a way to adjust the brightness. It easily caused eyestrain. The predators do need more of a presence. I can't count how many times I accidentally walked into a bear or wolf because I was intently staring at the ground to find mushrooms; only then to be attacked and have a mini heart attack because of the jump scare.

2. Wide Ocean Big Jacket (PC) | Jan 9 - 1.5 hours | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Just a cozy little slice of life narrative vignette that goes down easy and sticks with you afterwards. The simple pleasures of a one night campsite vacation explored from multiple viewpoints - two middle school aged friends taking the first steps in a budding relationship, one outgoing and one more introverted, and the cool aunt and uncle in their 30's who say they don't want kids having to play guardian for the night. A side story that follows two of the elderly staff members on premises was also something different and affecting. Characterization is a highlight thanks to the writing, and with a Blendo Games-esque aesthetic and accurate sound design, the game strikes a lighthearted tone with a sense of mood and place that's palpable and authentic despite the minimalist approach.

3. There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (PC) | Jan 10 - 5 hours | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ☆

An irreverently original point and click, full of one-off ideas and gags while also serving up a personal story with a sentimental core. While the strength of the comedy, writing and referential humor is subjective, enough of it hit for me to keep things entertaining and I respect the ambition given the very small team. The steady stream of clever puzzles and gameplay twists are the star of the show, with one parody in particular being so spot-on and in my wheelhouse it was worth the price of entry alone.

PS5 | 9th Dec - 10th Jan | 59 hours, 38 minutes

What an absolutely incredible game. It's been on my radar for years (and especially after I started hearing comparisons to Outer Wilds), but I kept putting it off because I heard it was better on PC and didn't have mine set up. And then my housemate randomly started playing it on PS5 and after a few hours of watching I HAD to follow suit.

The game is beautiful and relaxing, but also thrilling and utterly terrifying.

The basic premise is that your spaceship has crash landed on an uncharted ocean planet, and you have to try and find a way to survive until rescue comes. Beyond setting that stage, the game lets you figure out most other things for yourself.

You are immediately free to explore the ocean to your heart's content with only the obvious limits of your technology halting your progress. You have to find food and water. You have to start searching for materials that you can use to construct new machines which allow you to extend yourself even further. Generally I'm not super huge on these 'Survival' elements, but it works really well here. The basic gameplay loop is super solid, and I felt that I was always making good progress whether I was just gathering materials or following the story cues.

Yes, there is story. It's mostly conveyed through written and audio logs, but there are some more explicit 'story moments' as well. It's all married perfectly with the open structure of the game. Personally I was super intrigued very early into my first play session, and there were enough seeds from there on out to keep me engaged and wanting to uncover the mystery all the way to the end. It can't be overstated how much the setting and atmosphere enhanced everything for me though, so ymmv.

Ultimately, this is easily one of the best open world games I've ever played, and one that I hope becomes very influential in the future. I can see now why it's so often recommended to fans of Outer Wilds and vice versa. I feel that both games have roughly the same ingredients, but wildly different amounts of each one? Subnautica's mystery is nowhere near as central to the experience as in Outer Wilds (and you won't be solving environmental puzzles), but the regular sense of awe and freedom of exploration is definitely there.

For some more mainstream comparisons, I'd say that Subnautica is like a mixture of Breath of the Wild and Minecraft, with an atmosphere that varies between Abzu and BioShock's Rapture. In addition, this has scared me more than most of the horror games I've played. Deep, black water is horrifying to me at the best of times, but because this isn't Earth's ocean, you never really know what could around the corner. It can be spooky as fuck hearing a weird noise while being surrounded by water from all sides, let me tell you.

I feel that this is as much as I can say without giving too much away, but...AMAZING experience. 9.5/10, easy Top ~20 game for me.

1. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (PC) | 7th Jan - 5hrs | ★★★★☆

10. Darkwing Duck (PS4) | 1/12/2021 | 1.5 hrs | 3.5/5
I had a lot of fun with this game. It was a pretty good Mega Man clone. I enjoyed the mechanic of hanging from ledges which made the traversal through levels and boss fights entertaining. I probably would rank this after the Chip N Dale games in the collection.

11. Duck Tales 2 (PS4) | 1/12/2021 | 1 hr | 4/5
This game is an improvement in almost every way compared to the original. No longer do you have to grind enemies and back track through levels if you don't want to, which makes it a lot less frustrating. They also removed the timer and fixed the pogo jump which were problems in the original. The one negative is the music wasn't as great as the first.

5. Mega Man 3 (PC - January 7th - 3 hours - 4/10)

Hello ResetEra. This is my first try at this, hopefully I can get 52, although it will be interesting to see my gaming activity across the year either way.
  1. Marvel's Spiderman Remastered: Base Game (PS5) | January 7th - 60hrs | 5/5
    • Summary:
A Great game that features one of my new favorite versions of Peter Parker along with a number of other revisions of the characters from the Spiderman comics that sets up a version of the Marvel universe I just want to see even more of.

    • Performance:
I played the game in the Performance RT Mode and it looked and played spectacularly (no pun intended), I didn't notice any frame drops and Insomniac's Temporal Injection process cleaned up the lower than 4k Base resolution to the point where I didn't mind the resolution drop over Performance. I didn't experience any crashes in the base game.

    • Gameplay:
Movement? Amazing outside of the auto-aim for web-zips being funky at times. Combat? Generally great to play around with, although throwing things really should have the ability to aim more precisely. I played the game on the "Normal" mode in regards to difficulty and in the base game the difficulty curve for this mode was pretty fair in my opinion.

    • Story:
As I mentioned in my summary, the world that this version of Spiderman is set in is a world I really want to see more of, and the new versions of the characters really help with that. Not to mention my personal favorite iteration of a long-term Spiderman Villain ever. As for flaws, the main thing is the pacing in the last third of the game goes a bit quick and it leaves some loose threads that aren't mentioned really in the DLC or Miles Morales to my knowledge
  2. Marvel's Spiderman Remastered: The City that Never Sleeps (All Episodes) (PS5) | January 8th - 16hrs | 4/5
    • Summary:
A Trilogy that in my opinion would've likely done a bit better as a more connected narrative. Despite that, each episode does pretty well to act as episodic DLC (Accounting for that despite it coming included with Spiderman Remastered).

    • Performance:
Similar praises to the main game, however I did experience two crashes, one in Episode 1, another in Episode 3.

    • Gameplay:
Similar to the main game, however I say the difficulty spikes in the hideouts in episode 3 are a bit much.

    • Story:
Going to keep thoughts on this relatively short, the story being broken into 3 episodes in my opinion does hamper it a tad, I feel the narrative would feel better and fit to the degree of escalation that the base game did if it was one big DLC story rather than 3 episodes with their own game worlds. Another note is that I think they put some major character stuff in side activity things that could either result in people who never did those not knowing why what happened to those characters happened, or the developers dropping those characters due to that reason.
However, I did like the character interactions across the 3 episodes a whole lot, the scaling back down to a more "Down to earth" story at the start felt a bit refreshing after the base game, it's just the points above are what bring it down below the base game for me.
  3. Marvel's Spiderman: Miles Morales (PS5) | January 12th - 36hrs | 5/5
    • Summary:
A follow up that takes the best elements of Spiderman PS4/Remastered, and works them around a ethically diverse, and even more personal storyline.

    • Performance:
The case is similar here to Spiderman Remastered, I played in the Performance RT Mode and experienced no noticeable FPS drops and the Resolution was perfectly fine in my opinion.

However, this was the one to have the most crashes, with them seemingly happening at random (had one last crash in the 2nd set of credits ouch).

    • Gameplay:
The base gameplay is very similar, however it does streamline and fix some camera issues from the original game.
Although the issues with auto-aim on web zips does remain from the previous game, the improvements and additions (Venom is so dang cool, unless if they make an alternative for Peter in the next Spiderman game i will really miss it) do make up and surpass the original in regards to gameplay in my opinion.

    • Story:
I won't go into too much spoiler territory but this storyline takes the best personal drama aspects from Spiderman PS4/Remastered, and ramps them up in all the right ways, all while interweaving it in a story that respects and embraces the culture of Harlem, and other minority ethnicities. The character interactions are great, the setpeices (especially the finale) are more hard hitting than Spiderman PS4.
  4. Hades (PC) | January 17th - 26hrs | 4/5
    • Summary:
A game that takes the best of Supergiant's previous works mechanically, converts those elements to fit the Rougelike Genre, and then wraps it in a great story taking place in the mythos of the Greek Gods with a focus on Family in it's story.

    • Performance:
I played the game on my PC off of my RTX 2080ti and Ryzen 9 3900X, and I experienced a locked 60fps at 4k max settings outside of some strange stuttering in Asphodel once I added some modifiers (More adds), outside that, no crashes or FPS drops.

    • Gameplay:
This is actually my first Rougelike, and it does make a great impression of the genre for me. Once the run gets going, Zagerus feels very fun to play and all the weapons (outside of the gun imho), feel great to use and fight with. The combinations and fusions of the god's powers you can get can get very fun to play around with. The only criticism I would have from my playtime (Getting to 10 Clears, therefore the ending), is that it can be a bit annoying to get items like Gemstones or Darkness in regards to farming large sums of them (Didn't do the quest with Nyx that requires a ton of Darkness). Other than that, the gameplay is great, the progression feels fair and balanced, and the rougelike elements work great when combined with gameplay.

    • Story:
The story of Hades is a surprisingly touching one about family, and the truth. I won't say much else in order to not spoil it for those interested in playing. As for the writing, the characters are all incredibly well written, the humor is spot-on and made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. The serious moments are handled in the right manner, and the soundtrack is used well to set the mood of scenes.
  5. Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age (PC) | February 4th - 110hrs | 4/5
    • Summary:
The grandfather of the traditional RPG returns in it's biggest and most heartfelt entry, a celebration of Dragon Quest. Featuring one of the more dramatic and I daresay Final Fantasy-like DQ-stories.

    • Performance:
I played the PC version of the game, and took the opportunity to modify the engine.ini file after the uncovering of ways to modify it to re-enable graphical features that were cut out of the PC version due to the well-documented developmental differences between DQ11 and it's Definitive Edition in 11S. This ended up with me using the "Turn on everything" code for the graphics that put it as best as it can get graphically (IMHO, the Lighting model in 11S is better than the OG 11).
Framerate-wise, due to my high end rig, I was able to run this with almost no FPS drops, however I did experience drops for some unknown reason in one city that I couldn't identify the reason of.
I experienced 0 CTDs in my playthrough of the game.

    • Gameplay:
This is my first actual full playthrough of a Dragon Quest game, the last time I actually played a DQ was back when I was a kid playing DQ9 on the DS. As for 11, it is a traditional turn based RPG, in all the ways you'd expect, you have high degrees of control of what your party-mates can do in combat, you can make them all incredibly broken (some more than others) if you want, and you can mix and match them together to make most party compositions work in battle.
Content-wise, the game is well balanced in the front half, and while some people do have complaints about the "post-game" content, it's a modern RPG, most bigger ones have a good bit of post-game content to tackle and for me, while not 100%'ing the game, I did most of the post-game content in order to explore as much of the story as possible, only skipping most of the fetch-quest sidequests in the post-game outside of specific power-increasing ones.

    • Story:
For certain a character-focused RPG, but it does make it's own style with it's generally lighter tone, and that makes the moments where it shifts to a darker tone, , more notable and memorable as they break the mold of the plot up until those points.

The characters are all likeable and I had genuine investment in their struggles and personal stories as they develop and advance through the story of the game, character interactions being a standout imho.

Now, as for the "Post-Game" story. SPOILERS FOR THE GAME'S OVERALL STORY

Overall, I did like the story, and felt the ending of the game was well deserved and felt like a proper cumulation of the events of the story and as a celebration of Dragon Quest, acted well as such as well.
  6. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PC) | February 11th - 11hrs | 4/5
    • Summary:
The creator of the Metroidvania as we know it, Koji Igarashi's return to the genre under a new IP, a loving tribute and modern-day revision of the style of game birthed with 1997's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

    • Performance:
The game ran well on my PC at max settings with no FPS drops and no CTDs. However I will note a strange pixelation on the characters when zoomed in character dialogue conversations, I do not know if this is a result of a graphical option I picked, or the game itself.

    • Gameplay:
It's a Metroidvania by the father of the genre, it plays well, end of story.
JK. But it is pretty close to the point. The game has a pretty decent level of player power progression throughout the playthrough and doesn't overstay its welcome for a single playthrough in regards to length.

Overall, the game does act more as an advancement of IGA's later works in the Castlevania series, particularly the DS Castlevania games like Aria of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia. Sharing similar systems to those games for the base gameplay feel, just updated and tweaked with a bit more flexibility and with the game now playing in a 2.5D form rather than pure 2D of the past.

I played the game on Normal mode and went for one of the "Ultimate Weapons" of the game, in my case I went with Blue Rose as it was the cover-art weapon, and the difficulty of obtaining it (outside of the dang Feral Fangs) was relatively fair after learning what parts dropped from where.

As for bosses, most of them were fair to fight after learning their mechanics with the 3 exceptions, the 2nd boss being one of them more so due to the hitbox of the boss not being the most accurate in my experience. Although one gripe I do have is how the last 2 bosses are handled with no ability to save or prepare after the 2nd to last, with no save or checkpoint between the two.

    • Story:
The story is decent, however due to the game being relatively dialogue-light unless you repeatedly talk to NPCs a lot, the story is moreso a vector to the gameplay in my honest opinion.
That doesn't mean I find the story bad or as an afterthought as the lore they build in Bloodstained is pretty interesting and strong, having a good basis to branch out into a Sequel to the main game (Curse of the Moon 1 and 2 are spin offs/alternate universe to my knowledge).
Currently Playing: Sam and Max: Save the World Remastered , Valheim

MAIN THREAD
COMPLETED 5

5-1.png

First Major update.

Demon's Souls - Level 1 Run
- Honestly not anymore difficult then a NG+ run

Astro's Playroom
-Brings all the charm from Rescue Mission and delivers the greatest PlayStation love letter

VA-11
-It was decent, I kinda wanted a little more from the game as it has a lot of interesting elements that don't go much further then you are initially shown.

GTA V Replay
- Played it entierly in first person. In some ways in made the experience even better. Some games lose their charm over time but GTA V was just as fun as I remembered.

River City Ransom
- NES Yakuza. Besides a few issues with progression (I missed a boss which caused an extra hour to hour and a half to find in order to advance) the gameplay is pretty fun and has a ton of charm.

Not sure if I'll go for this this year since I'm focussing on my own game dev but will keep track of my games anyway:

1. Sayonara Wild Hearts
2. Olli Olli
