It just a side effect of swapping textures in real time on the emulator, depending on PC specs. Once the textures are loaded (.DDS format for faster loading compared to .PNG), everything's fine, you can even prefetch the textures in the RAM (I don't know if you're familiar with Dolphin for that matter).

The inventory has been remade from scratch to better accomodate the HD feel but you can eventually remove it if you don't like it, everything will be sorted in sub-folders for easy management.

We're currently seeing and testing what can be done about RE1, RE3 and eventually RE2 PC version.

I personally think it depends from game to game. I feel like the classic res examples look a bit awful. Got that painted look when the prerendered were supposed to look more realistic or cgi (a lot of details get lost). The Monkey Island 2 is pretty good as it looks faithful to the style. Viewtiful Joe looks amazing. When textures or art work are more simple, it looks a lot more authentic.

It is still amazing all the effort everyone has put into these. I just hope the A.I technology keeps improving.

This is impressive work. I tried running RE2 through ESRGAN naively and gave up after seeing all the seam issues since I'm not an artist. This must have taken forever to clean up.

Believe it or not, I think getting the coordinates of the masks to be able to recreate them from the upscales was definitely not the hardest part.

Kudos to you for sharing and the creator for making the package.

I'm one of the creators (everything related to the graphic part : upscales, manual edits and recreation), so thank you :)

RE2 is nothing like a Final Fantasy game in terms of animated backgrounds, they're definitely static. But there are a lot of instances where there are mask switches (the crows breaking the windows for example), so tracking them all was not a walk in the park, and then it was a matter of finding the good bits inside the original mask texture to recreate a new "alternate" BG to upscale from where you can get those upscaled bits. If it wasn't painful, a few scenes have multi-layered masks so these steps had to be done for each layer.

I wish I'll have time to write about it and all the problems we overcame in a blog section of the site.

I said this on the Dolphin forums as well - you've done a great job and should be proud! Will be downloading this to try out tonight.

People, I need help. I downloaded ESRGAN Resize and I did everything like the howto.txt says but CMD crashes when I put in a photo and try to rescale it. I am using a laptop though so maybe dual GPU can be a problem?

Waifu-2x Caffe says that it used CUDA processor though.

EDIT: Nevermind, I fixed it. I didn't drop the photo in LR folder.

EDIT 2: I didn't fix it. But I get this message though.

EDIT 3: Looks like I fixed it now. Just changed cuda to cpu in test.py

As a huge fan of PS1 era Final Fantasy games, I can't tell you guys how happy this makes me. Playing the original FFVII with upscaled backgrounds will probably be a lot more enjoyable to me than FFVII-R.

Does the RTX deep learning AI hardware tech help with this stuff or is GTX enough?

Able to do this stuff well with GTX 1660 TI with Ryzen 5 2600x CPU?

There's no algorithms written to use RT cores afaik. Pretty much everything I've seen that's open source runs off Python wrappers for CUDA.

The main limiting factor for use is VRAM. I have an 11GB 1080ti and I max out at input images of about 1000x1000px.

Nice thanks. Maybe my 6GB VRAM of 1660ti would be too limiting though it's GDDR6 maybe helps abit

Looks pretty great for something that doesn't require much human intervention and tweaking. Others have said it too, but my first reaction is that it makes old games look the way I remember them looking as opposed to how they look today vs modern games. I like blocky PS1/N64/SNES style models the way some people like pixel art. This seems like a godsend, because I certainly don't like the crazy aliasing and ultra low res textures that usually accompanied it.

What i did is :

- moguri mod (it installs the backgrounds and old font and also adds Analog direction, the pressure is busted but at least you can walk around 360 degrees now)
It comes with Memoria which lets you speed up the battle transitions and battle speed in general (make it run at 20 fps in the .ini it's perfect and pick "fast" battle)

Then install Reshade and do this :

- "HDR" (important to preserve contrasts with the CRT)
- Adaptive CRT make it high resolution so that it's subtle
- AdaptiveSharpen
-TechniColor1
-TechnoColor 2 (both at the same time offset each other to give colors that are very close to the original without "CRT")

They are selling the game like this

I can't

When installing ReShade what should I select for FFIX: D3D9, 10+ or OpenGL? FFIX wasn't listed in the compatibility list so I wasn't sure.

Thanks, those images looked great I had to give it a shot.

I ended up tweaking the CRT and the color filters a little, to try to match the color range and luminosity of the original (while not getting the washed out Steam version).

It's different on each monitor but it's fun to tweak it until you are happy with it !

That's for my 1080p display (to be seen in fullscreen because of the lines).

I can't see the image, but I couldn't get ReShade to work regardless: opened the exe and set the path to FFIX Launcher, slected OpenGL, then unchecked all and only left the one's you listed except there was no "Adaptive CRT" and "HDR", only "CRT" and "FakeHDR", so I slected those, booted the game up, but nothing. Shift+F2 didn't produce a menu and digging through the .ini files didn't seem like there was a toggle to turn ReShade on or off through that. Anything I must have done wrong?

Thanks for all of your help.

Don't use it on the launcher use it on the .exe that is in the x64 folder.

I'm back on my shit, doing more Dolphin games. Next up is Mario Kart 64. The menus look kind of iffy, but I'm really happy with how the sprites turned out.

For anyone not in the Discord, there's an assortment of ESRGAN models compiled here, including the ones used for those MI3 upscales:

Amazing work as always! Thank goodness for Dolphin given how difficult it seems to be to inject textures into N64 ROMs

After a lot of work, we're proud to say that RE3 is definitely coming soon. It's entirely different from RE2 on a lot of points and it wasn't an easy task to crack it, but we didi it ! The test phase will begin this week and after all the bugs are tracked and eliminated, you'll be able to enjoy RE3 in glorious HD :

Guess where Jill is hiding ?

See you soon !

Wow, that's really impressive. Very crisp. Showed it to a non-gamer friend of mine together with a comparison shot and they were also blown away.

I'm gonna guess she was right in the middle of the image and was shopped out :p
