A 3-year-old boy has died after Chicago police say he shot himself in the face.

The shooting took place at a home on Sunday afternoon, authorities said. The boy's family members told authorities they heard a gunshot while in another room and then found the boy with a gun, according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Kyleanne Hunter, the vice president of The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, says while accidental gun deaths are tragic, "unfortunately this isn't rare at all."

Hunter said a child unintentionally shoots themselves or another child eight times every day, citing a multi-year average of data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What else can be said at this point?

Leaving a gun outside a safe is like leaving kitchen knives on the floor. The parents should be charged.

Parents should held accountable. No excuse for a 3 year old to get hold of a gun. That's an inexcusable amount of neglect and incompetence.

Yeah, this happens constantly. Toddlers kill more people with guns, including themselves, than a lot of things we typically fear as "dangerous."

Apparently toddlers will use their thumbs when their fingers aren't strong enough to move the trigger. You can imagine how that ends.

In line with our usual pattern, this thread is closed. As tragic as these stories are, there routinely proves little to discuss beyond simply being shocked and depressed by the incident.
