Thinking more about the movie since last night, I think it had some failures as a standalone film, but as a part of the MCU, it's one of my favorites in a long time.
The plot was needlessly complex at times. Laurence Fishburne's character was almost entirely superfluous and they could have streamlined things by taking him out and having Ghost be on her own or in league with Goggans' crew. It felt like they put him in as an introduction to him being in later movies. (Is he maybe in Captain Marvel de-aged, working with Fury? Possibly helps out Scott in Avengers 4?)
I was worried at first when a few of the early jokes fell flat. But I think they really found the rhythm and it's honestly one of the funniest MCU movies, right up there with Ragnarok for me. The truth serum bit was fucking brilliant.
I liked that the movie felt tense and had interesting and fun action without having world-altering stakes. Having it be a more personal story for all the characters really worked, and it wasn't just two heroes having to take on endless waves of faceless aliens, monsters, or robots.
Evangeline Lilly was great in this. I hope she gets to stick around in the MCU after they fix The Snap. I like that they present her as a hyper-competent character who still has feelings, wants, and needs. She's not just the emotionless military badass type, but she's also not a damsel that needs to be saved.
I thought the effects in this were really good, too. There were times I couldn't tell if they were using practical effects for certain bits (even though I know they probably weren't).
Overall it's probably in my top 5 MCU movies. Much better than the first one. Although I still mourn the fact that we didn't get to see what Edgar Wright would have done with the franchise.
