Sadly, it has become a staple of the genre. Even cleaner ones, like Smash Bros, aren't completely free of it. It astonishes me that something you'd think would improve as people become more aware of the damage these images can cause, seems only to have gotten much worse over the years. Japanese games, in general, seem to have fetishized women to especially disgusting lengths. It's a shame, and it's one aspect of the medium that holds it back from being taken more seriously, in my opinion.

Not necessarily, NRS has made a conscious effort to dial things back on the sexualization front.

At least we have NRS and the Japanese exception like Tekken. And Capcom seems to have realized they went full DOA with SFV, so let's see.

I'm curious to see how much Capcom dials things back going forward. But at the very least, they recognized their mistakes.

Mk11 being recommended in this thread is hilarious to me. Boobs bad, gore good!
This thread and some of its responses are bizarre. It's a US-centric site and the country's Puritanical cultural roots are on full display.

I often wonder where today's Era would sit on something like Jack Thompson's activism (for those of you old enough to remember).

Just so I understand correctly - the issue is that an incredibly violent game is being suggested for a kid, and not that OP is not okay with garbage otaku pandering, right?

For the record, I wasn't recommending MK11 for a child. But from a broader perspective re: the question of representation of women in fighting games, I do want to give kudos to the MK11 team for making important strides.

I honestly didn't feel like the distinction was necessary as it seemed pretty obvious. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And on a related note: it's not at all fair to say people praising MK11's women are saying "boobs bad, gore good!" While there is certainly a discussion to be had about violence in games, the issue of sexualization is one of representation and societal prejudice against a very large portion of the population. The fact that people have to search for the handful of examples of good representation of women in games in general will tell you all you need to know.

Tl;dr, trying to conflate proper representation with "Puritanical" prudishness is kinda gross.

Moderately, it's pretty tame by fighting game standards, but it has some questionable designs.

I'm currently playing the game on PS4. No sexualized animations whatsoever (Neither boob jiggle, upskirt or raunchy winning/losing animations)

Aside from this image in story mode

Haven't gotten into this character's arcade mode yet, but lacking context... This does look fine? I mean, yes, that's a nude child, but doesn't look like a sexualized nude at all.

Again, i'm lacking context, i'll take the controller and play her story mode later today, and i'll gladly swallow my words and correct myself.

Compared to other Japanese fighters it is nothing serious but it belongs to the archetype "wonder girl with mind of a 5 year old in socialisation skills, ready to be manipulated or exposed".

Eg Blazblue had Platinum which had not any fanservice either ingame or in story mode. However game has some fanart in the gallery where she is exposed in a way more resembling adult games. I wonder how regional editors let this one slip under their noses.

No one said this. To what was asked in the very title of the topic, MK11 applies.

Since it's for a child, MK11 is definitely not a good option though, in my first post i didn't realize it was for a child.

Power Rangers would be a good choice.

Now obviously not every character is like this, and I don't recall any like upskirt or jiggle animations, but still.
Even without the excess cleavage or upskirts, UNIB does the common shtick: Hiding Fanservice in Plain Sight.

You've got:
  • Unrealistically short skirt, conveniently showing more thigh without the undies
  • Thigh-highs/stockings combo, the otaku mandated law of Zettai Ryouiki that MUST be in every game
  • Skintight outfits that fit around the curves. To the level that makes Star Trek Voyager cringe.
Don't get me wrong, the designs are still on the higher end of tasteful compared to most fighters.

The Debut trailer for Palutena and treatment of Zero-Suit Samus are probably the most obvious to me when it comes to Smash:

Smash Ultimate is also sadly a big example also of how this constant need for sexualizing and objectifying women can end up hurt the characters overall such as the lack of Mai Shiranui when Terry got into Smash because they simply weren't allowed to include her by the Japanese rating board despite her being one of the most recognisable and important characters from Fatal Fury and King of Fighters.

it's telling that who ever was dubbing Sakurai changed that explanation to declaring Smash is for "Good girls and boys" (who the hell approved that? Did they not realize what ended up coming across like?) and the fact some many SNK and fighting game plans blammed MAI, the fictional character and you know, know the devs, not the designers and artists who kept going more and more explicit with her, crossing over with the skeevy Dead or Alive series etc.
