If you had asked me in 2000's if Blizzard would one day be in this situation, i would've laughed at you. WTF happened, fucking activision.

How did Bungie managed to set themselves free while Blizzard is stuck in this mess?
Because Bungie was an independent contractor, Blizzard is an equal partner in a merger. Harder to extricate in this situation.

I wonder if theyre focusing on free to play/games as a service stuff now so they can make less games and earn more money. Would require less employees too.

That's sort of how I feel. A change in the workforce to target a completely different market, one with better profit margins and lower development costs.

Blizzard has partnered with NetEase since 2008.

These job cuts have nothing to do with China or Blizzard targeting the China market.

I didn't mean to imply that China itself was a problem, just that the extended partnership and development announcements, as well as more direct goal-changing seems indicative of a shift in priorities.

World of Warcraft brought a huge revolution to the gaming world in 2006 up until 2014.

What happened to Blizzard? They were leading the industry and even managed to convince studios to release Destiny and The Division and etc...

No idea what happened besides not caring.. Morhainne is out, Metzen is out... I only know that the people that made Blizzard are long gone besides a few still there

Sickening, considering the swimming pools of cash the top dogs at the company pull home each year - or merely for signing on - but those suits obviously deserve more money per head than hundreds of their employees.

Don't ever fucking tell me that micro-transactions and loot boxes are needed to make development sustainable when that shit is happening.

the HOTS esports division was a horrible ROI. I completely understood when they axed that, that game just did not take off and certainly not in esports viewership

But I don't know if they already cut those HOTS esports employees a few months ago, or if they will be part of today's cut

Ah yeah I didn't even think of that, the scene shut down but they may have still had the entire production staff that ran that esport employed.

Remember when the WiIU was tanking and Iwata and execs took pay cuts so they wouldn't have to lay off any employees?

This is really depressing news. Especially that Bobby Kotick made another 28 million this year. I'm a firm believer that capitalism is failing and it's getting worse with growing populations and automation.

Also, I think the guy who asked about Jason's sources has been quoted like 100 times lol. You don't want to stick your foot in your mouth in the first 30 replies or the wrath or era is after you!

I'm no accountant, but I wonder if Activision Blizzard would be able to afford to keep those hundreds of people employed if they fired one guy being paid just shy of $29 million a year to run a company that has to lay off hundreds of people...

Hopefully the job offers come for those getting the boot. Videogames weren't a mistake, letting companies turn them into big business was, fucking triple A market.

It's sad for the employees but I don't have any sympathy for Activision in this situation. They're sitting on an absolute pile of cash and it's their own greed that seems to have come back to bite them

Who cares?

This isn't the first time a large company has had layoffs. They'll get their unemployment and move on.

Cold, but no lies detected.

We're all human and many of us have experienced the fear, chaos and helplessness of being laid of, so a little empathy shows you're human. Era is full of actual humans, so empathy in this thread is a win.

Because its the fault of people who are being layed off that the stock is tanking right? Blizzard has been badly mismanaged. The stock price reflects that.

Activision will layoff some very hard-working people, its completely unfair, because this failure at Blizzard has nothing to do with them. Activision is destroying Blizzard in the name of unrelenting greed. Its not wrong to hope that they aren't rewarded for that mindset.

I don't think anyone was happy that layoffs were imminent, would be callous in the extreme. But I do hope some rich prick wont be able buy himself another boat after laying off hundreds.

Do you really think anyone is happy about people getting layed off?
Why do you think this has nothing to do with Blizzard themselves?

Sad to see so many people losing their jobs today.
What are they waiting for? Why wont they just leave Blizzard on their own terms and start searching for a better place than that shithole that treats them like this
Nobody knows who's going to be out of a job today. Seems a bit kneejerk to leave before knowing you might be staying on.

I hope that studios formed by former Blizzard heads and employees can hire a lot of them. I wonder when will Bonfire Studios announce something.

It's sad the state that Blizzard is in, it's just not the same company anymore. I feel bad for those who are layed off, I was layed off during the 2008 economic crisis and it was awful.

Man, I hope that having Blizzard on your resume really has impact to wherever they are sending them.

Publishing? And are the dev not affected? I expected big lay off in the studios responsible for supporting Destiny now that it's gone.
I wouldn't expect that to happen for Vicarious Visions, at least not yet. They're still working on the final piece of the current annual pass that releases late in the summer.

Not sure about High Moon and the others though.

They were never owned just a publishing daal. And smart lawyers - have a read of that contract, seriously, their legal department really worked Activision over.

I would love to hear the thoughts of those posters who were happy to hear Activision's stock was tanking and that layoffs would be imminent.
I'm sure they will be in here any moment unfortunately.

This is sad, Blizzard is my top 2 favorite studios and to see this all go down because Activsion basically...just sucks.

I wish they were able to break off like Bungie.

Blizzard are owned, bungie was a publishing deal.
Not exactly, but Blizzard have allowed Activision accountants to sneak in & replace the likes of Rob Pardo, who would have roared with laughter at the idea of Diablo Immortal at Blizzcon. You could tell Wyatt Cheng knew it was a shit idea, but if he told the suits no, he would have been fired, in contrast to a few years ago, the Diablo 3 team told the old CEO of Blizzard they couldn't fix Diablo 3 without removing the Auction House, it's clear devs at Blizzard have zero power now.

The company is way too bloated and WoW hasn't been bringing in all that profit like 10+ years ago and Overwatch is losing its steam to competitors like Fortnite. This is expected.

I'll bet execs are still getting absurd bonuses tho. Makes me sick. Hope these kind of resumes help them land jobs quickly. Feels like Blizzard as we knew it is far back there in the rear view now.

Why do you think this has nothing to do with Blizzard themselves?

Is that what I said? Are you suggesting that blame of these layoffs lies at the hands of developers/designers working at Activision/Blizzard rather then executives that are piloting the company?

I think that's a pretty disgusting attitude to have.
