At least she lived a full happy life free of strife, as opposed to
22 years of despair 'drinking herself black out drunk' over John's death.

Did you and I watch the same movie?

Sarah Connor, the Mother of the Future dies of cancer, off-screen. She had her ashes spread across Mexico in an event John was not present for, and then in accordance with her will, had a coffin filled with weapons. Why? Even though she said to John that every day after the initial judgement day was a gift and they were free, neither one of them believed that. She didn't die a happy and fulfilled life. She fought and suffered through cancer in order to stay alive to make sure judgement day didn't happen and even then, still didn't believe they stopped it. And its not like we were shown that [because Linda refused to be apart of the movie], we had to be told that in a bit of dialogue that is quickly swept away so we can have a funny moment with T-850 getting shot in the head and spitting out a bullet to only forget about her death a few seconds later because we have to have another action sequence.

Sarah in TDF continues to evolve as a character just like the second movie
and John's death is not without significance or purpose. It helps to further develop both Sarah and the T-800 as a character. While I will admit that his death is sudden and abrupt that doesn't change the fact that it weighs heavily over the entire movie and impacts everyone in one way or another.
That doesn't happen with Sarah's death in T3. It is just thrown in there because Linda refused to be apart of the movie.
