For those who haven't played it, Tatsunoko vs Capcom had a unique feature where two of the characters were classified as "giants". These characters were far larger and far stronger than any other character, but it was balanced through things like a lack of a partner character.
The feature itself was controversial. But this isn't a thread to debate its merits. No, this is a thread for dreams. Assuming this feature is back and that it was perfected, whether it's Tatsunoko or Marvel or SNK or whoever, what characters would you like to see and what would they bring to the table?
Remember that there are naturally three gameplay scenarios that we can experience from giants:
- Playing as a giant, facing a team of standard fighters
- Playing as a giant, facing another giant
- Playing a team of standard fighters, facing a giant
Let's start with the characters that were already proposed in discussions with Niitsuma.
Zero Akuma
From the console versions of Cyberbots. There isn't much story behind it. Its Japanese name seems to be a joking reference to Evangelion, as its name can also be read as "Type 00". Its design
While Akuma is popular and is credited for providing the original Capcom fighting game crossover, it's also a bit of a shame when shotos are added to versus games. If Ryu and Akuma are too similar, they risk making the other redundant.
Zero Akuma's status as a giant naturally provides a major distinguishing factor of its own. Just as Ryu helps us get used to how fight games work and serves as the standard with which to compare fighters, Zero Akuma can serve as the standard for giants. By learning how to use familiar moves this this character, we get an idea of how the state of the game is different. Perhaps Tatsumaki Zankuu Kyaku feels stronger when your leg is threatening such a large area, maybe Gou Shouryuken feels weaker when it's harder to jump in on you.
Daikyojin
From the Tatsunoko anime "Yattodetaman", apparently released as "Calendar Man" in some countries. Daikyojin is a giant robot warrior with a mind of his own; a good guy, but apparently easily insulted.
Daikyojin can change forms by combining with other support machines. He also wields a variety of melee weapons such as swords, a halberd, or a bow and arrow. He's got some missile launches as well. With these tools, it seems like Capcom could take a lot of directions with this character - a character who can mix up his attacks with different weapons, a stance character who can change forms, a summoner who can call its support machines.
MOSPEADA has also been mentioned, but I'm not totally sure which character they were intending to add. But moving on to possibilities that haven't been discussed, it goes almost without saying that one of Capcom's biggest franchises has a lot of possibilities that open up when big is in.
Giants enable Monster Hunter to be represented by the monsters themselves. After so many years of hunting Rathalos, finally we'd get to control of one of the series' icons and let him to do the hunting. Presumably, he'd be a fighter that's strong in the air and at a range, similar to Firebrand.
But Rathalos isn't even the most interesting option that Monster Hunter would give us. What about this majestic beast:
Brachydios is an exciting fight; it's big, strong, fast, and leaves a trail of explosions behind it. Showing off Brachydios in a fighting game would have a sense of spectacle; you're kung fu fighting in a powder keg. The player controlling Brachydios feels like they've got immense power in their hands, the normal sized player fighting it feels like they're bringing down a titan.
What characters do you think would have potential if giants return in another Capcom fighter or crossover fighter? I'm not the most knowledgeable about Tatsunoko or Marvel, but some more Capcom possibilities to stir up your creative juices:
