Pseudonymous author was charged under law that makes it an 'especially serious' crime to sell more than 5,000 copies of a work classed as pornographic.

The author, who writes under the pseudonym Tianyi and is from eastern China's Anhui province, was identified by the state-run Global Times only by her surname, Liu. The paper reported that police were alerted after the book Gongzhan, translated as Occupy, went viral last year. Police in the Anhui city of Wuhu, where Liu was sentenced, said the novel described obscene sexual behaviour between males, and was "full of perverted sexual acts such as violation and abuse".

Liu's jail sentence is 10-and-a-half years, and stems from a judicial interpretation dating back to 1998, according to the South China Morning Post. This states that if an author sells more than 5,000 copies of pornographic books, or makes more than 10,000 yuan (£1,123) from them, it is an "especially serious circumstance" that carries a sentence of imprisonment for not less a decade or life.

Liu is reported to have sold 7,000 copies of Occupy, which deals with a "forbidden love affair between a teacher and a student", and to have made illegal profits of 150,000 yuan. She has filed an appeal to the judgment, said the Global Times.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in China in 1997, but a 2016 UN survey found that only 5% of the country's LGBT community had come out publicly. In April, the Chinese social media site Weibo was heavily criticised for saying it would remove content "with pornographic implications, promoting bloody violence, or related to homosexuality", in order to "create a sunny and harmonious community environment". After users protested, Weibo backed down and said its campaign would only focus on pornographic and violent content.

Only just came across this now, but jesus. China you need to get your shit together.

In what way does homosexuality threatens communist ideals? Even then China decriminalised it in 1997.

From reading the post, it's because he sold the books illegally or that the money he made off the books was illegal since it was considered pornography?

Think less 'communist' values, and more 'conservative' or 'traditional'.

WHAT

The number of copies you sell (which is something you have absolutely no control over) increases the sentence? How?

As your influence increases your work becomes a threat to what the regime there wants the people to believe, so you are only sentenced as a serious offender if your work sells past the 5000 copies mark.

That's my guess.

Era posters who stan for the PRC should be forced to defend this before continuing with their regularly scheduled shilling.

You're probably right. It also sends a message to other creators that going viral could send you to jail for the rest of your days.

It's hard to wrap my mind around this disgusting level of oppression.

It's weird seeing hyper left posters defend the PRC when they're like, the most stringently hyper-capitalist country on earth now.

Oh also they're a totalitarian mess stacked on top of a house of cards that's all going to collapse in a massive ecological and sociological crisis within the next 20-30 years.

They're smart enough to recognize the flaws of the US and therefore assume global powers in opposition to the US must be good. It's shockingly hypocritical and dumb to view the world in such simplsitic terms, but not that rare.

"If we had the power China has over its people and their privacy/autonomy, we would do it right! We'd only go after the bad guys!"

Says every group of gullible people all throughout history when not remembering the power a Government wields has to be kept in check and the people protected as best as possible.

The prison sentences that come out of China are always disgusting and depressing.

A government should always be fearful of the populace, not the other way around.

Maybe; China has a long history of Totalitarian governments. The only thing new this time is the level of technology and pollution. But, given how China is leveraging technology to control and brainwash it's own people, we'll see what happens.

China isn't hyper-capitalist in the least. It's a mixed market for sure but I wouldn't call forcing gigantic housing projects that no one will ever live in capitalist at all, for example. Not to mention they've been recently scaling back on the capitalist reforms. So I'd say they're more hyper-authoritarian with a closely watched market that's both INCREDIBLY heavily regulated and very unregulated in the worst ways.

Lol yeah, anyone who lives in a big Western city can confirm this by befriending any of the many rich Chinese international students. Their parents own all the factories. The country is full of inequality.

This is what you get when your country is a conservative, totalitarian, capitalist hellscape.

The world really needs to start putting pressure on China and and other similar countries.

This is what the political map looks like in the US- https://www.voterstudygroup.org/ass..._drutman_e4aabc39aab12644609701bbacdff252.png

In China, the same political orientation map actually just looks like a straight line from the top left corner to the bottom right. Our top right and bottom left Western two-party combinations don't actually exist there. It's just straight up populists vs libertarians, and you can see this with the rural-focused "send everyone from the cities out to the fields!" stuff early in the post-communist period.

Ok, lemme try, in 2009 the USA jailed porn star/director Max Hardcore for distributing "obscene material". All performers were adults and everything was consensual. link

Am I doing it right?
Not seeing the link and make sure to add NSFW lol. The site has full nude ads.

What good things do they do?
The are investing a lot in renewal energy thus making it more accessible for everyone. They are already using 20% on renewal and are working towards more and more. That's good, but it does not excuse the erasing of the Muslim minorities, the score system, lack of freedom in general and many others.

China calls its system "Communism with Chinese characteristics," which really means heavy emphasis on Legalism and Confucian-influenced authoritarianism. It's all about concentrating power in the hands of traditional, conservative Han Chinese men. Anything that legitimizes the desires or individuality of people who are not conservative Han Chinese men is subject to scrutiny and often erasure. Even in Taiwan I see some of this attitude, we often say "It's not about following the rules, it's about being seen as following the rules."

The thing about China is that there are a ton of laws and a ton of security but basically no law enforcement except if you're some form of enemy of the government.

So it can lead to a lot of confusing and dangerous situations where you do "illegal" things that the government won't prosecute ever unless you get on their radar and then you're super fucked.

It's still weird that one of the most authoritarian nations in the world refuses to enforce traffic laws.

Yall gonna fuck around and get this site blacklisted in China. This is one of the few places I visit where I dont need to turn my VPN on.
I'm kidding if course, please feel free to continue being truthful regardless. Worst thing we can do is ignore this type of shit.

Btw they started blurring out the earlobes of Chinese actors and TV personalities with earrings because it goes against what the government believes is a proper traditional representation of men.

I heard that the renewal thing was pretty much fabricated by the government.
I would like to believe it's true, but I really don't trust pooh.

I honestly don't understand the huge push from the government to ban homosexuality. I attribute it to being conservative, but come the fuck on. This is year 2019. We know it's natural. Stop being awful.
