Yay new thread. I see that DC bias. (15 : 12)

Started reading Challengers of the Unknown (Kirby) today.

I love his current style WAAAAAAAAY more and i'm sure Tyrant will give me shit for saying that. But I truly believe he is the best X-Men artist and also does a fantastic Spidey.

Not generally a fan of that second style but I have to say I his Vertigo style is a lot better than where he ended up with Dr. Strange. So pretty but does not work very well as sequential comic art.

X-Men marathon round up time.

Exiles (2001) Book 1 & 2 (issues 1- 37) - Judd Winick/Chuck Austen

390764._SX360_QL80_TTD_.jpg

The crushingkrisis X-Men reading guide that I'm following mentions that a couple issues of Exiles intersected with Austen's run on Uncanny X-Men. I've never read any Exiles so started from issue 1. What is Exiles? An eclectic group of heroes are told they have to visit other realities and 'fix' them or they die. Their first mission has them dumped in a reality where mutants are almost extinct, and Xavier is a murderous shithead. Fun!

The team is initially led by Blink and Nocturne (Nightcrawler's daughter). These characters don't really grab the reader with charm at first, and there's not much decent banter between everyone. This improves gradually as the first volume goes on. I especially like how depressed Mimic gets, continually hopping from one miserable reality to the other, constantly killing evil versions of people who were his friends in his own reality.

Exiles is essentially a comic book version of that obscure 90s TV show some of you might remember: Sliders. There's crazy stuff like an evil Johnny Storm burning innocent people alive and saying shit like "You all like that smell? It's just burnt flesh!". Or the issue when the team are dumped right into the middle of the Phoenix Saga, tasked with the mission to kill Jean Grey. Or the issue where Captain America is a crazy vampire...

screenshot_2018_06_29_exiles.jpg

The art is average in volume 1, the character designs are meh, the concept is obviously really cool, the characters themselves start off pretty mediocre, though interestingly the story has quite a few of them replaced randomly, either killed off or returned to their own reality having fulfilled their purpose, which keeps things tense and suspenseful. It makes them not want to get too friendly with one another if any one of them could just vanish forever one day. Spoiler: characters tragically get too friendly with one another! It's pretty sad. :(

The storylines get way more interesting after issue 20 with the 2nd volume, including crazy alternate realities with massive stakes, the characters start to reach boiling point with one another, and the reality-jumping takes its toll on all of them. The art and dialogue improves, and the twists and turns are more devastating than ever. The addition of a bloodthirsty Illyana to the team in Volume 2 spices things up a lot, she's hilariously lethal and gives no fucks about who she kills.

This concept is ripe with potential, I hope New Exiles learns some lessons from this series and improves on it. Anyway, I finished with issue 37 and will continue the series when House of M storyline kicks off, as some issues intersect with that event apparently.

Rant time: Morph is the most irritating character ever, the dude wants to be Deadpool but he's just not witty at all. I literally ignored all of his speech bubbles after the first few issues.

Wolverine: Xisle (2003) - Bruce Jones

546823._SX360_QL80_TTD_.jpg

Very nice detailed art, a good break from the simplistic style used in the more mainstream X-series. A character study of old Wolvie, trying to be a father figure to Amiko and stumbling into a trippy nightmare. Good story.

Wolverine: Snikt (2003) - Tsutomu Nihei

detail.jpg

From the author from awesome dark trippy post-apocalytpic cyberpunk manga BLAME. Nihei shows that mangakas are superior to mainstream American comic artists at depicting action through momentum and velocity. Wolverine's first action scene involves a monster jumping around and it just feels visceral. It's like those speed lines alone make all the difference, but American comics just don't utilise them for some reason, instead they opt for static images of superheroes in the air.

Screenshot_2018_06_30_Wolverine_Snikt_2003_1.png

Anyway, Wolverine gets sucked into the world of Blame or something. I dunno, this is where American writers beat Nihei in terms of comprehension, lol. Nihei makes an amateur mistake, having Wolvie lose his first battle, by getting saved by the people who brought him to their reality, and then after he wakes up later, they explain how they brought him to help them save their world. Nihei, dude, at least make Wolvie beat his first enemy to show why these people would bother to bring him to their world! This is followed by an issue of almost nothing but text exposition, just awful storytelling, bleh.

It did make me want to re-read Blame, it's probably been a decade since I read it. I remember creepy lifeless cyberpunk dystopia dwarfed by impossible huge structures and obscure characters mumbling nonsense at one another!

630pm on June 30th! Our threads are being robbed of several perfectly good hours like when comics went to 20 pages. All across America people were protesting today about keeping threads together and Messi just separates those who want to stay in the June thread.

Got a bit curious about the history of Miles Morales and Marvel Ultimate universe and wound up reading the first 10 issues of Ultimate Spider-Man with the intention of...I don't know? (There's like 150 issues! And then other runs after that. But I want to see how Spider-Man dies and Ultimatum sounds crazy).

Spider-Man dying is probably the most meaningful part of that universe. Ultimatium is amazing in a "why did you do this?" sort of way.

Because nobody else wants to do the boring ass work every month.

Also lol at being angry at the Olivia banner that's been there for over a year.

The Batman banner this month is a joke.

Chill.

Without having read either (though I did read some issues of X-Men in the 90s), what would be a better choice between the Uncanny X-Men (Chris Clairemont run) Omnibus Vol 1 or New Teen Titans Omni (Wolfman and Perez) vol 1?

Hoping my LCS owner doesn't put Catwoman #1 in my pull box. If he does I will be super tempted to buy it, but I really don't want to add another book right now.

You should pull it because its Joelle and almost 100% will be great. Even if her writing is bad (it isn't and won't be) her art will be stunning. Drop a new age of heroes book tbh.

Fuck yeah, excited for more Plastic Man, and JL Odyssey finally comig aroun-

.......;(

Can you tell where Odyssey was in the op.

Sejic is currently drawing a Sunstone mercy page from start to finish on twitch.

Oh I guarantee it will be great. I mean, I'd still read it in OHC and if it doesn't get OHC I'll get it in trades.

I already dropped Immortal Men (Tynion, why did you do this book), but honestly I really like Terrifics, Sideways, and New Challengers a lot. I don't want to drop them.

Now, Hawkman, I don't know. It's only one issue in, but I did love it. I just have a hard time believing it will stay great. We'll see.
