I'd like to think that even if Falin died super quick there, Shuro and/or Marcille would be right on her tail, and Chilchuk would follow with the excuse that the job that was paid for wasn't done, and for some reason they'd meet Senshi who would say that dragons digest slowly or something along those lines, and they go down and have meshi in the dungeon anyways.

Marcille would probably follow her if she saw that she couldn't dissuade her.

But the most depressing part is how Laios thinks that no one besides Falin would be willing to that far for him.

I'm not gonna lie, I don't really disagree with that conclusion lol. Falin is obvious as she is his sister, Marcille clearly cares more about her compared to Laios as they are "good friends", Chilchuck's pragmatic self was already struggling to help with Falin to begin with, I don't know much about Shuro but he loves Falin compared to being just friends/companions with Laios, Namari couldn't be convinced to help out with Falin so Laios wouldn't move the needle either

Like you said, best shot for this what if scenario is for people to get caught up in trying to keep her safe, so they just end up going through with it anyways lol

There's two other one page What Ifs as well, what if Chilchuck had lost to the Mimic and what if they didn't throw out the treasure.

I wonder if future Blu Rays will also have What If Extras as well.

tbh chilchuck would've come with falin for the exact same reason he came with laios and marcille. he doesn't leave jobs half-finished, and that reasoning is also his roundabout way of being a total fuckin softie who doesn't want his friends to die.

it's a fun what-if to seriously consider since yeah, i don't think the start of the story would change for the most part. marcille and chilchuck would still come through, and shuro might even too for falin's sake. but he could also still insist on calling in his retinue. though namari is 100% peacing out either way. i do wonder how it'd go though. there's obviously a lot of ways falin would make the journey much easier, but laios's freakish monster knowledge and the entire scheme to just live off the dungeon is the entire reason why they made the trek in such good time and health. it's arguable if they'd even be able to conquer the red dragon without the specific anatomical knowledge laios brought to the table.

what i do wonder is if marcille would be willing to use black magic for laios's sake to revive him from bones. i am honestly skeptical she would if she never got to know laios as she has over the course of this particular expedition. if falin were really devastated, then maybe...? i think maybe they would go with trying to find a revival specialist on the surface or falin's own insane spiritual gift and connection to laios would help ground him back to his body and they could manage a more traditional revival.

I assumed that Falin would've been capable of reviving someone from that state so it probably wouldn't have been necessary for that. But if it was a situation where Falin wasn't able to then I think Marcille would still do it. She was already fascinated by dungeons and black ancient magic and I think her primary reluctance in not using it is being caught. So if Falin couldn't revive Laios and she was okay with him being revived through ancient magic then I think Marcille would still do it.

So, I read nearly every post, all the way from page 1, so I could see peoples thoughts and reactions, so happy so many people like this, and I'm glad I forgot nearly all of what I read of the manga years ago to better enjoy the anime. All I remember is that this story COOKS.

Also, I believe in Female Mangaka Supremacy.
Dungeon Meshi - Fullmetal Alchemist
Ryoku Kui - Hiromo Arakawa
FMA is my absolute favorite manga and anime, and once again I am lucky to find the things I enjoy in yet another story. Well written and fully realized characters, a detailed and well explained world, and a series that is clearly pointing towards a specific, probably completely planned from the beginning ending.

I cosplayed Hohenheim this past convention, I will probably be looking at how I could pull of a Senshi in the future.

Last thing of note, I didn't remember him much, from the very beginning Kabru came off as... well, off. It's funny, because looking at it from one point of view, he is very much the character you'd be following in a different story. His goal is to defeat and rule the dungeon (right? I mean, that's close nonetheless, I don't want to google and get spoiled lol.) That is something that could very well be the actual focus of a story, but when you look at it from how we view them, it becomes clear how excessively egotistical that is, and how the rest of his party is just completely in line with his ambitions comes off fanatical. Just murdered some dudes "well, yep, that's why he's the only one fit to rule!"
I don't remember what happens with him later... but I do not trust him.

BTW he is a neat panel the manga cut out in the Kelpie/mermaid/Kraken episode, instead to just keep the dialogue

So Laios knew not to trust Kelpies from experience. And yes, that is Falin about to beat a monster to death with a morning star to save her bro.

Probably, I just think it's sad cause it gives us insight into Laois's mind and how he thinks how the others see him and how much they care about him.

Definitely one of my favorite moments from the manga. Great episode that really got into the character relationships while still having some action moments filled with dread.

If people haven't figured out that Laios is on the spectrum by this point...

Such a great moment, when everyone is shocked seeing Falin and only Laios comes out with "wow, she so cool!".

Also, Senshi didn't say much this week but he mvp in my heart for holding on to that tray for dear life.

I'm a slightest bit annoyed someone at TRIGGER managed to insert jiggle physics into one scene somehow.

Nothing majorly offputting, but still unnecessary.

I like the neat touch that Kabru pulled off the D&D remove armor to get rid of stealth disadvantage on rolls strat.

I do wonder what would have happened in that instant if Kabru hadn't lauched his sneak attack. Would Falin just have gored Laios like she did to random strangers or would she be more merciful with him (and Marcille) ? Was that outcry just the mind of chimera digging through Falin's knowledge to use to her advantage or is there enough of her left in there?

To manifest Laios for a bit: I wonder, can all monsters survive outside of the dungeon?

It's mentioned that monsters will venture out to cause trouble if the ecosystem is disturbed. But a thing like the water sprite? Surely it relies on the magic that permeates the dungeon?

the anime make it more ambiguous, but the manga has a panel clearly showing Falin about to attack Laios before Kabru sneak attack

calling brother there is just trick to drop Laios guard

Holy fuuuuuuuuuuuuck, y'all weren't kidding with the show starting to ramp up, that was prolly the best episode yet

God, even in this universe where death is not necessarily permanent, it's still terrifying to see it happen so abruptly, the one lady getting squashed like a tomato as Falin landed was particularly gnarly. And not just on Falin's part, Kabru coming out of nowhere to slit her throat and start stabbing her repeatedly had me shook, man really is a menace when it comes to fighting actual humanoids

Poor Marcille though, once the damage was done, understandably no one trusted her to revive anyone else...

I also thought this was easily Laios' best episode yet in terms of writing (also lmfao at his first thought being that Falin looks super cool) I know he has that golden retriever vibe to him where he is overly friendly and sucks with social cues and what not, so it was really refreshing seeing him be bold for once and stand up to Shuro. Where yea, you can see how he can be annoying, but Shuro got his own issues with communication that just turned things into a simmering dislike when it didn't need to be that way. Glad Laios was able to convince them to continue with their mission of saving Falin.

Lastly, Kabru continues to fascinate me even though I still don't like him. I did appreciate his group being self-aware of how fake he can be when he wants people to like him, that's probably my main gripe with him lol. I also found it interesting that he was willing to admit he could picture Laios actually beating the mad mage as well. That said, really interested seeing his reaction to eating monsters, dude apparently has had one hellish backstory... I don't know what the long term plan is for the character, but Laios and co. better watch their backs.

You can tell I'm really in love with this show as I'm starting to type paragraphs now lolol

Yea peeped that, made me roll my eyes lol

That's definitely how I read it. If Falin is still in there, she ain't coming back through emotional pleas, that's for sure

I feel like the anime ran over that bit a bit too fast for my liking. The manga panel had a much clearer sneak peek at his backstory:

I managed to get the gist of it without pausing, though I guess it's easier in the manga to have it sink in for obvious reasons lol

I'm not sure this episode was what I needed after Land of the Lustrous
Still great though

It is more than intelligible, but I was personally really hoping for them to animate it as a very brief, hellish AoT-esque flashback sequence, because i feel like it would have made the punchline of him having to eat monster food absolutely hilarious.

Looking forward to watching the episode over lunch

If I remember right you weren't too hot on the show for the first couple episodes (which is understandable since it's a much different vibe compared to what we're getting now) so it's been very fun to see you and others get progressively more into it

Holy shit!

This episode took a nasty turn when Chimera!Falin showed up. I almost forgot that revivals are possible after seeing half the group wiped.

Poor Marcille, though. Went through the trouble of reviving Falin and she'll never live it down, given the circumstances.

Didn't expect uncensored Harpy chests. I was expecting the nippleless look at least like a few episodes ago.

Chimera Falin's is about as tame as I thought.
Marcille: WHOA HEY!

Don't actually answer/spoil me on this, but man, Laios and co. really have yet to leave the dungeon

Going into this series I just assumed they'd get a chance to leave after saving Falin, or maybe it's the type of series where they explore more than one dungeon, etc.

But nah, they still in here, while other groups have already come and left. I find it very interesting, the possibility of the entire adventure taking place in this one dungeon.

I'm not sure this episode was what I needed after Land of the Lustrous
Still great though

Here's a GIF for your troubles

Lol true, yea they certainly could've gone harder on it for the joke

Right yea, I knew that based on the buzz it was getting, that it was likely to eventually get its hooks in me. But yea, despite the title, I wasn't expecting the show to be THAT interested in its premise of using monsters as food. Now that I've seen more of the (excellent) worldbuilding as well as connected with our main group more, I do fully appreciate it. That said, absolutely does help now seeing the plot kick into overdrive, but I acknowledge that it wouldn't have been nearly as impactful if the show didn't take its time getting there.

Kabru a fascinating character to me and I enjoy seeing people's reaction to him.

The way he was steering the conversation at the beginning, jumping from "black magic bad" to "I knew you would have have done the same thing". He a sly guy.

I wonder if being monsters let them show the harpy nipples uncensored

I know that's not the biggest takeaway from the episode but i was surprised
