Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) says that she supports the decriminalization of sex work nationwide, noting that "we can't criminalize consensual behavior as long as no one is being harmed."

In an interview with The Root, Harris was asked whether sex work "ought to be decriminalized," though the interviewer did not specify at which level.
"I do," Harris responded. "I think that we have to understand, though, that it is not as simple as that. ... There's an ecosystem around that, that involves crimes that harm people. And for those issues, I do not believe that anybody who hurts another human being or profits off of their exploitation should be ... free of criminal prosecution.
"But when you're talking about consenting adults? Yes, we should really consider that we can't criminalize consensual behavior as long as no one is being harmed," she added.

Wow. DIdn't expect this from a national politician for another cycle at least.

She supported FOSTA/SESTA though, so I wonder how much she will practice the policies she preaches.

That's kind of rich coming from her given her hand in shutting down Backpages.com, which made life for sex workers that much harder. This is a good move though.

If they keep it illegal, it's just going to happen anyway, except with the involvement of shady pimps and sex trafficking.

Might as well make it legal and bring it into the light. If that's how the women want to make money, that's perfectly fine.

Kinda crazy to think we might go from a President who doesn't understand what constitutes sexual assault directly to a president who wants to decriminalize sex work.

That's kind of rich coming from her given her hand in shutting down Backpages.com, which made life for sex workers that much harder. This is a good move though.
She explains her reasoning for doing that in the interview.

When Bernie loses the primary and I'm forced to vote for Kamala in the general, at least it won't be the WORST thing in the world.

This is good. This isn't a topic that's brought up enough because Americans are horrified by sex work and I'm happy to see Harris address it. Hopefully other candidates pick up on it.

With that being said, was Harris one of the Senators who signed the bill to shut down Backpage? I can understand if her position has shifted in the interim but I want to see what she says specifically about sites like Backpage that offer a safe way for sex workers to offer services.

Literally everyone voted yes on that bill (except Paul and Wyden, who are just anti-government in general).

Backpage had a huge human trafficking problem that they didn't bother to address. Voluntary sex workers were collateral damage for FOSTA/SESTA.

Fucking finally! Shocked any of the nominees went for this considering I really don't recall anybody actually pushing for it on the democratic platform.

Good tbh. The lack of support I've heard for this has been deafening.

I've been calling for legal, government regulated prostitution for ages now. It is absurd that paying for or selling sex is illegal.

This is a very welcome surprise from Harris. I didn't think anyone would be willing to take this stance for a while.
She supported FOSTA/SESTA though, so I wonder how much she will practice the policies she preaches.
The primary intent was legitimately to deal with trafficking because certain words/phrases would deliberately be used to bypass filters, and warp in response to moderation. The effects on non-trafficked sex workers and stuff like CL personal ads were an externality, not the actual targets.

I'm surprised how quickly she realized SESTA/FOSTA was actually doing more harm than good. She has some keen staff members, since sex workers came out full swing against her when she announced her candidacy. Someone on her staff must have spotted that and advised her to add this stance to her platform in attempt to win them back. She's been very very good so far on the campaign trail.

Yeah if a guy can pay $500 to a woman to have sex in a "POV" film movie and then distribute it for profit, how is that legal but literally the same action without the camera and for-profit distribution is considered illegal?

Human trafficking is a subset of sex work, but not all sex work among consenting adults is human trafficking. The media and many in law enforcement try to conflate the two. Just like there's human trafficking in the restaurant and service industry but we don't make it illegal to buy food from mom & pop stores or food trucks.

Even if they don't make prostitution legal in the US, they need to have some middle ground that doesn't make the public safety situation worse. Right now a man or woman involved in sex work has only two options. Either forsake all their anonymity and do porn or hit the dangerous streets.

I'm all for that. Get some regulations in there and protect sex workers from exploitation and dangerous working conditions.

To say I am suspicious given her support of FOSTA/SESTA in spite of it's myriad problems is an understatement, but at the same time, if she elaborates on what her support entails and it's not just an attempt to look good, then well: good. Sex work should absolutely be decriminalized, and any candidate coming out in support of sex workers should be celebrated. At the very least, even if she backtracks or proves to not listen to what sex workers want, this opens up public national discussion on the subject, which is a good thing, so I do thank her for that.

If she reconciles this with her FOSTA/SESTA support it just might pull her out of the "I'll support them over Trump but for the love of fuck please don't make me have to" tier for me.

She's a woman. Can anything be worse than that?

Wait until you find out that thing she did so you can get that three-word-chant from Trumpers.

Don't waste your vote, they're all the same: Trump may be a treasonous asshole, but Kamala is a woman. Vote independent, that's the only way to go.

In some places prostitution isn't illegal but soliciting prostitutes is. So the law sees johns as the criminals and prostitutes as victims.

Anyone: Prostitution should be legalized. It will offer safer work environments and health of all involved. It is going to happen if it is legal or not, so might as well regulate it with everyones wellbeing in mind.

Cowards/religious/misogynists: !!!!!!! *no rational argument* !!!!!!!!!!! No, - insert sexist remarks -

Should be legal everywhere on the planet. It's gonna happen eventually, but if the US makes the step, others will follow.
