On character builds, balanced ones are not the way forwards, at least that's what I've found. You want your main attack stat to be close to 800 once your character has leveled all the way to 200. High level enemies like Death, Daimon and high level dragon's have got high damage resistance thresholds a balanced character with 500 attack and 500 magic attack will go above those barriers by less meaning your character will do less damage overall.
I will deal with Daimon once I get to him but as for Death? Magick Archers can easily destroy him and farm him in the Sewer and yes that includes Magick Archers with a Balanced Build here someone showing how to do it on a 401/515 Build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD8QWMUySiQ
And at least versus Death in this scenario a Min/Max Build (Take Sorcerer all the way to Lv.200) didn't make a significant difference at all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rm2RulJf8w

I wasn't going to min/max because I hate playing as the Sorcerer so much I actually just finished grinding out all of my needed vocations for my build today by farming the Wight near The Great Wall so now I'm Lv.86 I'm happily playing as a Magick Archer and I'm barely at Stage 2 (Hard Mode) in the story so I have to wonder what my Lv. will be once I actually decide to start Bitter Black Isle

I've decided to finally sit down and play this game in its entirety. I've started it a bunch of different times and always get distracted. Last time I spoke with someone about the game, they were talking about how fun ranged combat is, and how great magick archer is, so I looked that up... It seems like every discussion about this has you leveling up as something else, like sorcerer, and not actually playing as magick archer until level 200. How much of a difference does this really make? It seems strange to me to spend the whole game playing as something else just to prepare for something totally different.

Don't do this on your first playthrough. It is boring and tedious playing as soc for 200 levels just so you can two shot Death or a dragon with magic archer. Just play whatever you think is fun. I think all the classes are equally fun to play (expect warrior, can't ever hit shit with their slow ass weapons lol). Its also useful to get the augments for classes because you get to keep those and can put them on any class you play. At the end of the day, once you have a gr bbi weapon, it really doesn't matter what your stats are since those weapons are so op, you could kill a dragon with 200 magic attack with the best staff in the game. Do not worry about min maxing. Its really a boring way to play the game.

Man, I've just about had it with these hired pawns finding treasure boxes and then taking the stuff inside before I even get a chance to look at it.

Playing normally, I've already hit level 11 and I've just entered the Witchwood. I've heard this quest goes away once you reach Gran Soren, so I'm not skipping it, but it seems like min/maxing from level 10 is a pipe dream.
For the love of Cthulhu please don't worry about min-maxing. Seriously. There is no point. Just have fun. :)

It's not lost if that's what you're worried about. All the stuff pawns collect is yours, haha. Personally I don't mind it because it means less shit for me to carry.

Couldn't agree more, or emphasize this enough, haha.

Once you get a lv. 3 BBI bow, you can just stack 4x periapts and blast arrows and destroy Death in seconds regardless of your stats. So there's literally no point.

I'm not going to worry about it too much. I do appreciate the tip about going to BBI early to vocation change. I did do that. Not going to bother with trying to go in and get that ring though. I want to be able to explore that dungeon later.

I went through some waterfall cave and it seems I'm roadblocked without a quest. On the plus side, I have killed two cyclopes so now I just need to find a third for this quest I have.

Honestly, playing as a spellcaster so far in the game reminds me of why I dropped it initially. I always play casters but I didn't find it very fun here. Lots of standing and charging lasers while moving slowly. Maybe it gets better later. My second attempt at the game, I went fighter and had a more enjoyable time and got a fair bit further. This time, I'll take your advice and just play around and see what's fun. There seems to be a lot of different play styles to choose from.

Back in the day I was having a lot of trouble with Awakened Daimon so now I figured I will run through BBI again in all it's stable performance glory and finally finish it.

Seeing as my PS3 has passed away I guess I need to get the PS4 version.

Hopefully it plays the same. :D

I got to Gran Soren and went into the Everfall. I'm now as far as I've ever been in the game. Everything from here on out is new territory. Currently: quest overload.

Gotta say the game's grabbing me a helluva lot more than in the past, happy to have given it a second chance.

How many areas are there? I started months ago but stopped playing once I got to the royal city where I'm supposed to show off the hydra's head.

Me and my daughter started fresh characters a few weeks ago cause this wonderful little lady (with some help from the girlfriend) went out and bought me a physical PS4 copy <3

falling in so much love all over again. I'm at that point where I want to explore and find some of the armor/weapons i remember and get myself stacked but i know if i do too much more of that by the time i accept the last request from the Duke i'll be so overpowered it won't be a challenge! :-D

Guess it's time to sprint towards either the everfall or BBI ... me and my lady were cheering the little one on the other night as she stumbled on a cyclops on the road up to the bandit camp and decided to stick around and fight it. 15 minutes later and all 3 of us are whooping and hollerin and cheersing our drinks and NOTHING makes me feel the way this game does.

Like coming home. Much love fellow Arisen!

edit: Also - Min:Max is absolutely not required in this game! That's the greatest part of DD... you can stumble and slip and claw and tooth and nail your way through the game and still beat everything all the while playing exactly how you wanna play!

My first character was an insane, Daimon farming, explosive error slinging Dire Gouging sumbitch assassin that walked through the world like a shade of death...

my 2nd was a pure sorcerer 4 foot tall little girl who never wanted to stop throwing meteors at people!

All shapes, all sizes! everyone bleeds the same! THE WIND IS PUUUSSSHHHIING MEEEEEEEEE!!!

I fucking love this game but the grinding you need to do to get to the fun builds always catches me, usually end up falling off trying to get levels in sorc for elemental damage.

Are there any other portcrystals you can get early besides the one in the Everfall?
I just found out that you can use this to make escort quests not garbage.

What grinding

There is no grinding

You can get more later. Early, hmm, not that I recall. Maybe the one hermit mentioned. The Dragonforged's cave is not that far north of Gran Soren (near Hillfigure Knoll IIRC).

Escort quests can all be safely skipped, btw. Unless you really want to do them or care about the rewards.

PS4: Locked 30 fps & full 1080p resolution
PS3: Variable 30 with a lot of dips to the 20's & a resolution of 1280 x 608

This current gen port is a massive step up from the previous last gen release, but doesn't reach the heights of the recent PC release.

I just started the game later on I will use your pawn once I can afford her.
If you are both friends on psn, then the pawn is free. My pawn is also a sorcerer and around 120. My psn name is drjh007 if you want to use my pawn. I don't play dd anymore so my pawn's level won't go up though.

How's the PS4 port? I've yet to play this game, but I know I'll love it as long as a play a good port. It's currently on sale too.

Any tips for a new player ? I'm a strider.

Carrying around mushrooms and greenwarish (aged, potent, kingswarish, etc) for restoring health and stamina is better than bottled curatives since they are so much lighter. You can buy them in a lot of places and find them all over the ground. That was a big one for me real late in my first playthrough.

Isn't there anyway to load a manual save in this game ? A RPG without manual loading is stupid.
I accidentally opened the left door instead of the right one in to get the ring of perseverance.

Should I change to easy and redo it ? Or are there any other moonbeam stones in this area ?

What's the best guide for making a bbi ready character that likes bows and daggers.

I completed the main story on ps3 but got my ass kicked there so want to be prepared this time.

Get a rusted bow and enhance it so it inflicts torpor. Combining it with fivefold/tenfold flurry will get you all the way through daimons first form.

You can still go back to your checkpoint save, if the auto save didn't overwrite it.

Update on my pawn. Not a new entry, but it's been a while, so here goes:

Platform: PS4
PSN ID: Mejilan
Pawn Name: Ahamet
Pawn Level: 130
Pawn Vocation: Currently Mage (close to max, already maxed out Sorc.) Will be maining a Mage once all is said and done.

Additional Details: Will be switching to Warrior soon to get her Bastion. Maybe one or two other classes here and there for additional Augments. Has some decent BBI gear. Wearing Adept's Robe for the relatively fast AOE heal around her (doesn't apply to her, sadly). Like my MC, she entered BBI at level 7-8 and has done almost none of the vanilla game. It's been all BBI so far. Don't plan on leaving until we clear Daimon 2.0, Death, and find the rest of the 13 pieces of BBI gear for that one annoying quest. Thanks to Kiryogi for occasionally taking her through Daimon runs and gifting me with level 3 cursed armor. Much, much appreciated. Have a pair of nice screenies of her on my PS4, but I'm not sure where to upload them to share here.
