OMG you're the Luminary! You're the chosen one! Also you're good looking and have great hair!
Eleven: 😐

Omg we're going to die!
Eleven: 😐

[Omg it's our dead grandpa talking to us proud he got to see us all grown up
Eleven: 😐
I feel like this was less of a problem for me when DQ (or other games) were just sprites or the models weren't as expressive because Eleven does smile, glare and emote, he just... doesn't talk.

I hate silent protagonists. The only time it gets a pass from me is if it's tradition (Dragon Quest, Ys, Zelda) or if it's actually in service of making a player-insert instead of just pretending it does.

Byleth almost single-handedly ruined Three Houses for me (and the fact that the game is boring as hell did the rest).

I do love this game but that's mostly in spite of Eleven.

I'm not saying that the silent protagonist is not a valid storytelling technique... I just don't prefer it. I think what I love the most about Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 is Rex and Shulk. Those are my top 2 favorite JRPGs. But other JRPGs that I prefer like FFVI over Chrono Trigger, is yes, because I don't like the silent Crono. I really enjoy Xenoblade X, but also, I don't like that my dude is silent.

I just find it all weird. I tend to imagine when playing a game that I am reading a story or watching a movie. It's hard for me to imagine myself as the main character in these stories. Again, that's a personal preference thing. I understand it's a valid and popular storytelling technique, since it's been around for so long and MANY people enjoy it.
It's not about imagining yourself into a character or else they wouldn't have an intricate background. It's about delivering character development through what others think and do for you rather than the silent protagonist stating it plainly. DQ Heroes are seen and made through the eyes of others.

The silent protagonist works when you have options and stuff, like in the Fallout games, but the total silence is a detriment to the story in an HD title like this. Especially with those beautiful cutscenes. It doesn't bother me that much but it would be better if you could, like, either pretend your character was saying something or them being voiced.

I do enjoy the new ways they get around using the Hero's name in voice acted scenes

My favorite so far is
Rab sneezing when Eleven has his name officially announced as a newborn

Also creative was
Eleven's dad's ghost only using your name in text only conversation, and just calling him "your son" when speaking

It's pretty simple where I lie considering DQV is one of my favourite games and there isn't a single thing about it where I could tell myself that the MC speaking would have made it better. Hero succeeds and delivers so much because his actions are doing the talking, his family is doing the talking for him. He could talk for hours and they would have less weight than what we see and experience in the actual game.

Silent protagonist is a valid method, and it works well for Eleven unless you are in some kind of mission to see him cry his brains out every time a tragedy happens in front of him

Wtf @ kid Eleven talking. That was way out of left field. Why the hell doesn't adult Eleven talk?
Dragon Quest V had a similar thing.
When you are a kid you meet adult version of you who talks and when you are an adult you meet the kid version of you in the same situation and kid version talks.

Divinity 2 does this really well. You have a "silent" protagnist but you are making him speak sentences, which just aren't voiced, but written. So it works really well.

I also though Persona 3/4 did this really well. I felt like the MC was a real character because you had so many options of how to respond to the characters.

Dragon Quest Heroes doesn't have a silent protagonist and they are insufferable so I guess I'm fine like this.
I just want the hero to do more heroic things on the cutscenes, maybe further on act 2.

He makes different faces, come on.

Not really. The silent protagonist thing didn't bother me a whole lot until I got to Dundrasil but then it stands out like a sore thumb with
Rab just nailing this emotional scene of reuniting with the grandson he thought he lost and Eleven just stands there impassively, stiff as a board, with a blank look on his face.

A few things from reading this thread. Went back and "reforged" some items I picked up like the ribbon for Jade, and now she recovers a whopping 6MP per turn instead of three. Damn, was that worth it. Also, reforged some of my agility items I picked up as well, and the platinum Greatsword. Hero's attack power is crazy good now, though I will probably transition to sword and shield when I get a few more medals and can get the falcon sword.

I also "reforged" the Academy uniforms since my women characters all wear them, and Erik has two pair of Robber+3 gloves to boot. Also, if things seem "too easy" I just don't do much fighting - I run through the area picking up materials, and fight monsters I haven't seen before, or that have specific items I want to steal from time to time. As for Tentacular, that was the fight with the power of Sylvando - he's amazing for boss battles. His Hustle Dance (and Oomph), and Jade's multi thrust made that fight doable at lower levels

Wow

Um wow, I knew things were gonna go to shit but man things really went to shit towards the end. Pretty crazy how quick the tables turned. That cutscene :ooooo So that's why Jasper was so powerful that the party got thrown back into their default clothing lmao

Damn you Jasper. Also he's kind of funny to listen to in Japanese since I can't get Reigen from Mob Psycho out of my head.

Almost 50 hours in and still loving this, it's addictive man

My only quibble with the new QOL enhancements is that I don't think you should be able to buy mat
I ran into this the first time today, it was going to let me buy something I never even seen yet in this playthrough.

It was a big deal in the original version when you get the recipes for the fancy cool armor but they require Platinum something or other and you don't really run into that for quite a while later. Just being able to buy it then and there is kinda lame.

Damn, I forgot if he gets hustle dance at Gondolia, that's a busted time!

Seriously people, count the skill points until he can get Hustle Dance, it's a powerful party heal, the first you'll get, that is as powerful as Sylvando is Fabulous, which is to say it scales off of charm, which makes it powerful the WHOLE game.
No kidding as soon as he hit 17 I used a skill seed and got fuddle dance. Then I just reset the lithness tree so I could get hustle dance. Sylvando is indeed fabulous as a charater and in combat lol.

Also now that I'm at the casino I'm farming to hell and back till I get everything. I got the jackpot once but it wasn't silver spin :(.

You can't buy materials unless you've found them previously. Or maybe just hit the part of the game where getting the material is possible?

A few times I've been stopped with "you cannot get this yet" when trying to buy a material.

I ran into some items that told me I didn't have the materials even though I had lots of money so I assumed it's either super rare materials or I found a shop that sells it and it's just saving me a step.

Oh well maybe that is the case. I was in the right area for it (Gallopolis) but it was only located in a part of the map I haven't explored yet (the desert/cave in the back).

In that case it isn't too bad then.

The main character reacted via the tears in your eyes.

I wonder whether depleting the MP of a boss is a viable strategy ?
Yup, I've seen bosses run out of MP. So I don't see why not. However, as far as I know there's no way for you to see their MP well stat. So you'd have no idea how much MP (or how long it would take) for them to run it until it happens.

Unless, does the game have an Enemy Info Scan ability/spell later in the game?

Hit my first crash, about 50 hours in. Thankfully I had just saved a few minutes before but the autosave in this is pretty generous too.

I was able to buy Platinum Ore and craft the Dundrasil Set well before I found Platinum Ore in the game. This was even before I did Octagonia.

Just beat Kingsbarrow on Stronger Monsters. It wasn't toooo bad but I had to leave at one point and go buy more heals :/ Got the boss first time, mostly because I crafted the hats I found right before, I think.

So what's everyone's favorite monster name? I think mine is Knight Aberrant.

DQ monster name puns are one of my favorite things about these games.

Tournament arc with sinister undertones? This is pleasing my Thousand Year Door nostalgia.

idk about a favorite name but by far my favorite non-slime monster so far is Cruelcumber and I'm so bummed there hasn't been a single palette swap of it in the last 25 hours of this game lol

Playing the switch demo and my god this game is gorgeous. Insane how this game looks in portable mode, but the game overall has a great art direction to reign in the graphical fidelity.

only thing to bother me so far is the beginning "damsel in distress"vibe ive been getting from Gemma. It's a bit off-putting.

so did the Arboreans just assume that the Heliodoran entourage was just part of the gang or what? like, they had to go through Arborea to get there, and no one pointed them out or anything?

Yeah, he made me quit Stronger Monsters.

I honestly think the bosses from then on have been a fair challenge even on normal (at least for me) so I don't regret that decision
