The only way in-game advertising could ever be "thoughtful" is if it's in a realistic sports game or something. Billboards in racing games, sponsored vehicles, stuff like that.

Oh god, it's time I quit gaming. It's getting more and more annoying. There will soon be six versions of each game - standard with ads, standard no ads, premium with ads, collectors edition with ads and collectors edition without ads. (Or the equivalents to premium and collectors)

There will always be fantastic games outside of the influence of AAA Industry. Just look at the likes of Manor Lords and Balatro, in this year alone.

If you're disillusioned, it's merely time to adapt and take your money elsewhere instead of this ad-filled, season pass laden, £70 for a base edition, rushed out despite months of crunch, barely playable dreck.

Not like I buy their games anyways but ooof, ok EA, do your thing, see how it goes

As an aside, I was trying some F2P game for work and while Im used to ads in these two forms:

- A banner all the way on top with rotating ads
- an ad video in between game sessions

I was shocked to see a FLOATING square playing a video ad IN THE MIDDLE OF GAMEPLAY. I have never been closer to punting my phone into the Mediterranean

I'm already taking a "thoughtful" approach to buying EA games. Don't make it even easier to skip broken, tech garbage EA games by topping the faeces cakes with ads.

Theoretically I think it could work in other games as well. If you have a game taking place in New York, and specifically Times Square, then would it really be all that out of place if there were electronic billboards for a recent movie or music artist?

Do yalls ad blockers erase product placement in films and TV too or do you think 30 second streamed ads are the only way this could manifest?

Guess Wilson saw the MS fuck ups and was worried they'd lose their crown as worst fucking company in the industry. There's plenty you can say about Wilson, but one thing that's inarguable is just how much work and dedication he puts into keeping EA the dumpster fire it is.

honestly, there could be a way for them to implement these tastefully.

think of the sims and all the sponsored opportunities there. they already have sponsored sims packs, so it wouldn't be too much work to maybe start putting "simified" real products in the game.

if the next sims is going to be f2p from the start (which i think it is), then this is definitely a way for them to do that.

of course it's all too easy for this to get out of hand, but that doesn't make it a certainty.

Codemasters did this before in the years leading up to EA.

The sponsor banners on the side of racetracks in GRID and DiRT Rally 2.0 were server-based and differed based on region and who they were sold to.

In 2020 a lot of them changed to NHS banners in the UK for example, telling people to stay at home during the lockdowns.

www.bbc.co.uk

Coronavirus: Video games add 'stay at home' Covid-19 adverts

Candy Crush Saga, Dirt Rally 2.0 and Sniper Elite 4 are among titles that show a government campaign.

I could totally see a future where the pitchside banners in FC get more dynamic.

Most people will buy EA games despite saying otherwise.
Paying for something with annoying ads is the future ^_^

Adds in the game world on bulletin boards and things in games where it would fit the aesthetic? I probably wouldn't care unless the adds were for something shit.

Pop ups or in menu adds? Would avoid buying.

I actually didn't mind the way 2142 did it, with in-game billboards. Only issue is that it didn't fit the time period.

A current era BF game with changing billboards would be ok. I would hate pop-ups and the like however.
