Yep, this completely unsurprising as the next step for them. It's been clear for a long time that they will never lift a finger to parent any kind of scalping.
From their point of view, for something like a PS5 it's literally free money for them.
- they don't have to negate contracts with manufacturers
- they don't have to raise cash to source stock
- they don't have to source locations or spacing to hold any stock
- they would get a cut from standard sales from reputable stores selling them if it was a normal transaction, but can take a bigger percentage from smaller sellers.
- that already larger percentage is then vastly increased by the inflated price from scalping.
Even taking a temp hit on fees now, they can set up a market that gives them these advantages — there is almost no downsides for them except the (minimal) efforts they will make to deal with fraud.
