The women in his movies always end up being underwritten, under-considered, or just awkwardly sidelined. Rosamund Pike in The World's End may be the one real standout, but that's more on her strength as an actress than the role being written much better.

Last Night in Soho was a gigantic disappointment, aside from Wright's stylistic proficiency behind the camera.

How many times have they tried to get this off the ground
Wasn't Nicolas Winding Refn attached at one point
It's been in active development for over thirty years. One of those legendary White Whale / nonsense projects that execs have been obsessed with being the one to crack forever (like Stretch Armstrong).

If it's done in a creative way, I can see something like this working out. But I'm not sure if Wright is the person to do that. And the recent run of books aren't very good in that regard.

I haven't watched Last Night in Soho, but seeing how it ends...

with the lady victim of sexual assault getting revenge on her attackers, trying to kill the woman who tried to help her to get rid of all witnesses and becoming overcome with guilt about it to let herself burn in a fire...

...my confidence shrunk significantly.

It's perfect casting if you even remotely know the original. I really hope the remake keeps that European 60's kitsch.

Feels like he gets linked to a lot of things that never happen, which is for the best cos he's terrible.

Suggesting Sweeney is just her looks after euphoria, Anyone But You, Reality and Immaculate has the stench of sexism on it to me. You can not rate her as an actor without doing the same shit chuds do. She's incredible at conveying emotion via expression alone and has also proven herself shrewd on the business side too. She's absolutely one to watch on several fronts.

I feel like everyone is glossing over the fact that Wright isn't gonna be the one writing this, according to the same story.

Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in talks to pen the script.

Edit: And the reason this is happening is more because Sweeney wants to do it than because Sony "doesn't know what they're doing", it's her project that she's trying to develop from start to finish, and because Sony wants to be in the Sweeney business, they're letting her.

Perhaps this is an uncouth thing to say but i have to admit the few things i know about Euphoria are that the main character dates spider man and also that one of my friends discovered she was bisexual because of Sydney Sweeney on that show.

Why? The original is a fun crazy late 60s/70s campy arthouse rollercoaster movie, it's meaningful because it was fresh. Even if you get a modern Paco Rabanne equivalent to do the costumes, it will still be stale.

I don't remember it being offensive, the main character just enjoys sex and doesn't think of it as a big deal. This was very novel back then but nowadays you even get it in Amazon's Fallout.

If you haven't seen much of her stuff you should.

Yep. It's like how we only got Immaculate because she dragged it back to life.

Edgar Wright being attached to a project assuredly means it won't happen, yeah? Syd's got the juice, though.

She wants to do it, thinks it's a good movie for her and finally has the pull to do that sort of thing. Seems like a perfectly reasonable reason to make a movie.

Like Barbie, Barbarella is a totally outdated role model in the modern age. Like Barbie hopefully they can craftily revive the character in a positive light but you will need some talented writers.

She just hasn't been in a lot that would interest me unfortunately but my impression is that she can be really very good. I'm waiting for her international belgian/french collaboration indie movie phase.
That's fair, I'm very curious to see where she goes. I was wondering after her drive for Immaculate whether she'd go the Mia Goth route but seems she has broader intentions. She'd murder in smaller indie films though you're right.

She'd been doing those movies for a few years now, just usually not as the lead. Reality was one of them before HBO bought it, as the most recent example.

Barbarella is a fun, campy movie but most of the appeal is the visuals and how weirdly horny it is. Not sure you can do that today lol.

I really enjoyed Reality, got to see it in the cinema. With her profile as it's becoming it'll be interesting if she dips back into more arthouse features in a few years. She seems to have a clear idea of what she wants though so I'm just interested to see her growth.

She feels like the type that's liable to do a bunch of "one for me, one for you" projects, so I think it's mostly a question of if her "one for me" ones will be indies or mid-budget studio movies.

Could be a great movie with those two with a good script. Just lean in heavy to the sex comedy, sci fi elements and goofiness, Sweeney's SNL appearances and Immaculate make it clear she has a good sense of what works and what doesn't.

Could go austin powers, could go retro sci fi, could go future sci fi, or a lot more options. I do think it should be light and breezy and fairly simple though, it won't work with a grim dark vibe. Horny space princess must fight horny weirdos and a space wizard for control of McGuffin (ultimate weapon in the original I think?), thats really all the bones you need. keep it simple, 90 minutes shlock B movie with a $15-20m budget and its printing money. Lean more heavy on physical comedy (3 Stooges, Mr. Bean etc) as that works better internationally too.
