So this effectively kills the MK kompetitive scene, huh?

I don't think so, why would it?
NRS has their own series and NRS games were never really that big of a draw at Evo. Other tourneys felt more NRS-focused. There's a big MK event in early March.

It just gives people who don't like it more fuel, imo.

Glad UNI is there. It makes it not being on ArcRevo's tour even more nonsensical. Considering ASW apparently handles the esports side, it feels weird they did not put UNICLR on their tournament series.

It's a blow to it. Evo brings out competitors who don't go to many events. But the game is still online. There are other majors. There are hella locals. MK11 sold well and has an established community already, so there's no real need for it to go the way of MvCI.

The NRS community is quicker to abandon games than other scenes, but maybe they'll rally.

Now, the real question: With Marvel returning to EVO, will we also see the return of the "Ghost of Marvel?"

DAYjTWZVoAA8Kq-.jpg

For context: After the final Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament, the shirtless guy walked on stage and challenged the tournament's winner to a match during the celebration before getting escorted off stage. He was later named "The Ghost of Marvel" by the FGC.

MK11, with it's excellent online, will remain alive as long as people are willing to play it. Not to mention that there's other tournaments across the US that will run it.

What kills those games are a combination of WB/NRS pushing a new game and killing the existing one even though its not even a sequel to said game. And the community going all in on the new game. An abscence at EVO won't be the reason why this or any other game to come from that publisher to die.

I never saw MvC2 tournament play so I'm excited to see the best 8 play this game.

Haven't watched the stream, did say why no MK? Sound like a dick move, it might be a garage FG imo, but it does have a healthier scene than some of the games that made it in!

Glad samsho is back, it was amazing last year especially the top 8, and it will be better this year since the game is better balanced now.

re: MK11's competitive scene.
Most NRS players are pretty vocal about how EVO hasn't been the friendliest spot for them to compete over the years, from non-streamed Top 16s to 8am pools to general disorganization (starting top 8s without all 8 players), etc. Not being at EVO won't be the end of the game's competitive life...unless the pro competitors choose it to be. But it is a shame it's not at EVO, as it'd have been the only game with rollback netcode, I think the only game where an online-only player (until recently) had a lot of success (Ninjakiller) at tournaments, etc. It definitely sets up EVO as the biggest event for games that rely on locals. Which isn't a bad thing, but I can't help but feel that the chatter within the FGC for years, and especially this year, has been that the importance of good netcode for a competitive scene is super important. And yet, EVO 2020 seems like a rebuttal to that.

The Prize Pool for MK11's Final Kombat is something like a total of $255,000, which I believe is quite a bit higher than EVO's. The other big tournaments tend to have good payouts too. NRS has said that they plan to support this game far longer than any other NRS game. Most have assumed that means a Kombat Pack 2 and additional tournament support and patching/balancing. The ingredients are definitely there for it to remain a competitive game in the FGC, but ultimately, it comes down to the players.

If y'all want to check out the best fighting game that didn't get an EVO spot, Max is doing this tonight.

MK literally has 5K people watching an online only non pro tour competition. I think it'll do fine.

Really hoping bringing back MvC2 is more than just an anniversary event, as great as that is on its own. I can't imagine Mr. Wizard isn't aware of how....sensitive the MAHVEL card is following MvCI, and I can't imagine Capcom just letting big daddy Evo drag back MvC if they weren't still interested in it and/or if things were still dicey with Marvel.

Even if the end result is a port or some kind of collection, that'd at least be signifying some good things. 🤤

You're putting too much thought into it.

You're putting too much thought into it.

I mean, EVO content especially if it's going to be on TV has to be approved by the owners right?
You can't just be like "We're putting any game we want on stage and broadcasted".

Between MVC2 at EVO, and the leaked 1up Arcade Cabinets (Not to mention the prior additions).
I think we're likely to see something like a Marvel/Capcom anniversary collection at the very least.

("Big daddy Evo" particularly is more than just me joshing around. Evo's been an international staple corporate event for years now. It can't just do things without some kind of thumbs-up.)

Wow, all the poll is telling me right now is people don't really pay attention to EVO.

You gotta be pretty freaking crazy to think an ASW game wont be on sunday. It's a staple now.

My head canon is that the Ghost of Marvel is funding this invitational tournament after skulking in the shadows the past decade.

The best players in the world all in one place after all this time? It's a trap to force the winner into a FT10 money match punk.

Next year is the 20th anniversary of CvS2

Last year was the 20th anniversary of Third Strike. They didn't do shit.

something magical is happening for Marvel.

Since we're talking about a hypothetical MvC4, thoughts on my tier list of who should show up?

EVERYONE IS HERE! Including Bone-Claw Wolverine!

OK, maybe not Bone-Claw Wolverine.

And no Servbot either. That's what Tron Bonne is for.

Everyone else I'm cool with!
