Well, having gone back and cleared everything out of Eureka I'm now feeling a bit better about my situation. At least before I climb the tower again I will know what to bring with me and where the right place to save is.

Just first time through looking at my Bestiary it wasn't looking like a final dungeon situation but I guess there are a lot of unique bosses/enemies in there and Eureka.

Finished up FF6 this morning and now finishing up FF5, while giving up on my ant-synergy challenge run. The new Very Fast speed makes both games vastly more difficult, mitigated only by the better save options. Very Fast Active totally fucks Doom in FF6, and I totally forgot how grindy the end of the game is. I wasn't remotely close to decked out enough when I got all of the characters.

My rank order for the PRs is likely going to land at 5>3>6>1>4>2. I think 2 is generally bad (just play the SaGa collection for better games of that era), 3 is an absolutely fantastic remake that FUCKING moves and removes three different tiers of total bullshit that made very few people finish it, 1 is better as a 10 hour game than it is as a 20 hour game, and 6 thrives on the great revised soundtrack and great new artwork while still being a bit of a mess in terms of pacing and balance.

Done with FF3. Little trouble, but took a while for the big last few fights. I had a Dark Knight, Ninja, and two Grand Mage (?) jobs by the end of it, level 50.

There is a lot I love about this one, especially the music, the way the games systems interact with the world more, the world itself. I'm not crazy about how some of the jobs work, sometimes I'm left wondering how this is supposed to be viable or not. Often I felt like the game is presenting you with a triangle shaped hole after giving you a half dozen other shapes as well, and it is sort of up to you to find what fits. Sometimes this was interesting and other times stressful. And I'm sure a decent amount is just me not being familiar with it and finding my way on my own. Some jobs I never used, others I think I kept using past their intended period, but couldn't find a suitable replacement.

I felt like the game was really well balanced towards the latter half, it pushed back with a consistent pressure and I never really felt the need to just go grind but also never was too easy either.

But anyway, I will do IV in the near future, probably after a few more backlog games. I'm pretty familiar with the first ~half or so from the SNES version, but I never finished it.

IMO there haven't been all that many good comparison videos after the games launched, with most that do exist being focused on battles. I find one channel's gameplay+music clips to have the best footage.

Chugging along on my quest to unlock every steam achievement for every mainline FF in order. Maybe five hours into IV right now. I played it back in the day on the SNES but never finished it and I think I know why. It's a huge leap forward for the series when it comes to storytelling and ATB is a big advancement but the constantly rotating party members and lack of interesting progression systems make it kind of a slog for me. I'm already counting the days until I can get to V.

The FF6 patch could be coming soon ( perhaps this week, or next), and FF2 also has a patch being worked on finally which makes all six games. Could be general system updates like scrolling or don't stuff, could be spell assets, or just bug fixes. But there's been a lot of activity so it isn't just a small handful of bugs.

After trying the mod for smooth scrolling with FF4 it was working great but when I got the airship I found I couldn't move. It would just hover there and try and land. I uninstalled and re-installed and I can move now, and the only thing I had modified was the scrolling and the text, so I assume that was it. Or some combination of that mod+proton+steam deck.

So despite me saying I was going to go off and do other things before FF4, here I am just before the last dungeon almost done with it. It is such an easygoing experience can be hard to put down. Which does make me wonder because while I'm not terribly familiar with it I know the US FF2/JP FF4 had different tuned difficulties and I'm curious where PR landed. It seems pretty easy, and similar to FF1 and a good chunk of 2 I have been easily auto-battling through most of the latter half of dungeons.

I was looking forward to the first ATB game, but I kinda want to go back to FF1-3 style, lol. The whole "Active" vs. "Wait" setting is so BS and I wish "Wait" made time stop whenever any menu is open, not just items and magic. Keeping things running in the background is to me not a meaningful way of adding difficulty or excitement, at least to me today.

There are a lot of side things to do yet, some that I have definitely missed out on. The whole Yang/Pan thing I don't think I would have stumbled on myself, also several summons that apparently come from rare drops that I have missed. Don't really have any more patience for invisible walls in dungeons anymore so I've been referring to maps when I get frustrated.

I appreciate what they have done here a lot but I think 3 is my fave so far. Not so much Job System but I think the balance of that game is done really well.

FFIVPR basically follows the original FFIV template to a T besides some miscellaneous changes like Arrows no longer being treated like ammo that runs out. One major change however is the required experience to level up for every character has been basically halved, which leads to everyone in your party gaining levels constantly if you're not skipping out on battles, causing the game to be a cakewalk in the second half of the game. I don't think it was ever fixed in a patch.

Finished it. Was mostly easy up until the optional bosses and behemoths, and final boss. Zeromus big attack usually KO'd 3/5 people and that was a bear to recover from.

I got all the chests this time, but missed out on one summon and didn't look for the "hidden" ones. Didn't do Adamant armor and I'm sure some empty spots in my bestiary are from places I can't go back to like Zot, so is what it is. At 18.4 hours it is the quickest FF I've gone through so far.

Looking forward to 5. Never played it.

Oh man, I'm replaying FF2 at the moment and had the exact same thought yesterday. After so many FF entries, that I've played since FF7 when I was 11 years old, I definitely prefer the turn based combat entries. FFX was amazing for returning to this, and I even loved XII for trying something different with the gambit system (doesn't require constant rushed menu management to avoid being punished by the ATB). Though to be fair I haven't played 7R yet and I hear great things about that combat system.

I hope you enjoy FF5! One of my all time faves (despite the ATB =P). That job system is just too good, Faris is badass, and the music is sooooo impressive. It's an entry that doesn't take itself too seriously, and puts all the fun in the combat/job system.

FF6's patch is out, as expected based on updates to the DB. Mostly bugs, but also some balance buffs to Magicite leveling bonuses and some game speed tweaks.

I'm guessing FF4's patch is next, as it is the one getting patched on consecutive days now.

.

That is pretty much exactly what FFX and Bravely Default 2 do, just with different visualizations. I think ATB works better in FFV, and the speed makes a massive difference in game difficulty.

Various sprites got updated, generally to darken them very very slightly but I don't like the Locke change. I liked the green belt!

Another bit of evidence that they really aren't "done" yet, well beyond normal bug fix patches.

Looks really good!

Yeah the attention to detail is crazy. I guess it might be a while before they're ready to port to consoles.

I don't mind. The more they do to improve on these remasters before porting to consoles the better. There are still some visual bugs I think, like grass/trees not displaying properly on the world map (which also needs to get darkened a bit in FFVI). And of course, they really, really need to fix the font for all of the games. Have a different font for English vs other languages if need be. Give us the option to choose a FFVI SNES like font, please! I personally would also like to see an option to keep the bottom left window (where commands show) remain throughout the fight even when no commands are available. Just looks weird and off centre to me between each time the ATB bars fill up.

Hopefully there is no rush to port to consoles before they add a font selector option :P

I'd be having a rough time with it if I didn't have this snes ff6 font I've been using.

I'm firmly in the "ATB but wait when I have an action up" camp. The tension of having a time limit and feeling rushed is not enjoyable to me at all in menu-based games. I strongly prefer turn-based 4X games over RTS's for similar reasons.

I can't be only one experiencing this. Does anyone else have the ATB gauges flickering when they are filling up? It affects all three ATB games. For some reason it only happen at 1920x1080 resolution. I tried 1600x900 and 1280x720, the gauges are fine with those resolutions.

I'm a couple hours into FF5, got my pet dragon and a little bit of freedom.

The job system here is how I expected/thought it would be in FF3, in that using a job over time lets some of the abilities to "stick". This is nice as there were lots of situations in FF3 where the game really wanted you to be *this job* but if you did that you might not have white magic/black magic whatever, and it seems like in a way FF5 lets you be two jobs at once. I also appreciate that all the character sprites look like those characters wearing outfits instead of generic templates.

I've been hunting around for Blue magic, which is a thing I like to do in these games when they let me. I like that I can acquire magic in shops again, as well as MP being the usual thing. I miss having 5 characters.

Oh, and the title screen is ~fancy~, that is nice too.

Just tested this with FFV and yeah, 1920x1080 causes some weird flickering/vibrating effect with the ATB bars.

Aiming to open all the chests in Karnak with a 10 minute timer and random encounters and most of the chests have monsters and learn blue magic and beat the boss.......is quite the task ;_;

Edit: managed with 1:09 to spare after a few tries, whew.

FF4's patch is probably coming this week. This one has been worked on for around 3 months with around 14 pushes, so it seems like it is about as large as the FF6 patch.

Probably bug fixes, some balance changes?, and maybe updating the spell effects.

I've made it to world 3 in FFV. They really could have ended the game there and with some tweaks I would feel it was pretty complete, and I've already spent more time with it than any of the others I've finished. I'm sure I've wasted time on jobs I don't need to, or chasing blue magic that isn't useful. I've resorted to using a guide for the first time because there is so much missable stuff.

I really wish there was a QOL feature where if you went to the "Magic" section of the main menu it would let you use any type of magic that character had learned, as shuffling in and out of jobs and abilities just to cast this or that is a pointless exercise. I'm really enjoying it though. There are several skills that make mages really useful in battle without expending MP, like Dance and Gaia, which is appreciated.

Her Record Keeper sprites look a bit better, no more staring blankly at the player:

But sprites for her in this style only exist for Freelancer and Beastmaster jobs.

The FFV patch is now on Master but not on Public, so likely will get officially pushed out tomorrow AM. It is about as many distinct repo pushes as the large FF6 patch we just got.

Next up seems to be FF4.

Still, the art style for 4 and 5 is that the child characters have both eyes visible (Rydia's angle changes when she grows up), and they retained that in the PRs. I think the intent is to show their eyes as a larger portion of their head, which is how they attempted to distinguish the characters as children.

I've skimmed over the FFVI patch notes, did it do anything to address the stuttery scrolling? I'm guessing no and no reason to expect anything for that in V either.

Oh, they're still patching these? I was considering going back to IV (stopped when trying to find enemies for the compendium after getting the airship underground, think I got burnt out after 3 and a half consecutive FF games), but if there's a patch on the way I might hold off a while longer.

No boosters but the first few games are so short compared to 7-9 that it's really not necessary. Especially 1. And the games have been generally sped up.

I have no idea what is going on with the patches. 5 has been sitting on Master for a week now, and I think the other four games have pushes to beta-product which means release candidate if it passes testing.

When do we expect these things on consoles? I don't get SE, honestly. These games have a Nintendo heritage and no Switch ports anywhere. Heck even Sony has a heritage with these games and they're out in the cold too. Just a bizarre choice. Especially given the Japanese's fanbase preference for those platforms.

I bought a few on iOS, but they don't even have controller support. Like, what?!

Lots of patch stuff!

FF4 got sped up a bit in three different ways, and experience gain was reduced, so it is a bit more difficult than it was before. Drop rates buffed, flying enemies move up and down finally.

FF5 and FF6 both have updates to various branches, including Master (but not Public), so there's no patch. Possible that these updates sitting on Master are for the ports, not patches to PC.

What is there to get? They were basically Early Access, released in phases, wildly delayed, and at least one releasing in a terrible state. Now that they are roughly resembling "done", they are prepping for ports. Like basically every Early Access game.

"COVID bad" basically. Turns out developing six full remakes simultaneously is hard, and stuff like testing and soundtrack were especially impacted by it. On top of that it was difficult to plan for this type of project there's virtually no other examples of a major publisher doing something like this. Dev/testing resources to polish up the next release went to the wire on the previous one and patches, leading to cascading delays.

I finished FFV tonight. ~45 hours. I kinda lost all momentum once I got to the merged world and have been distracted by other things, has kinda been a slog getting through to the end but mostly not the game's fault.

I kinda don't like the job system, as it gives me big anxiety over whether or not I'm putting AP in the right places or if I will end up in a bind at the end stuck without the right abilities. Having gone through it once and knowing what works alleviates a lot of that, but first time through is rough. This was less of an issue with FF3 as you got some kick ass jobs at the end that kinda made whatever you did up until that point not matter as much.

Lots of fights got pretty gimmicky, didn't enjoy that so much. I did appreciate how most of the Magic focused jobs had some form of "no-MP attack" that made them useful for dungeon crawling while at the same time conserving MP.

At the end they show you how many abilities each character earned and I really only had 20-30 in each character out of ~75. I guess I picked the right ones as the bosses were pretty easy at the end. Bartz as a Ninja with Rapid Fire ended up doing 8 hits a turn and that helped out a lot. The other three were White, Black, and Summoner and two of those made it to Dual Cast. I was about 50 AP off the other one getting it too, but it wouldn't have been that useful.

I think I like 3 a little bit better. Maybe 4 too, by a smidge, it is close.

I'll hop on 6 soon, but it is less interesting as I have played it a lot before.

FFV just got the big patch released. Mostly bug fixes and minor adjustments. The balance changes were extremely limited (Brave Blade and Chicken Knife adjustments, and a few other things for more intuitive and less frustrating behavior.

No idea which of 1-3 will get their patches next.

Am I crazy or is FF6 battle speed really slow, even when set to very fast? Like FF9 slow...

Is it possible to add mods, or at the very least, swap out the font files for the Pixel Remasters on a Steam Deck?
Yeah, you just over write the existing font files same as you would on a PC.

You could just take the Japanese font file, copy it and rename it so the game detect it as the English font file. Or you can bring in other fonts from other games. I use the PS1 FF Origins font for I, II and III. And then the SNES FFVI font for IV, V and VI.

Am I crazy or is FF6 battle speed really slow, even when set to very fast? Like FF9 slow...

In FFVI, VII and IX, the ATB gauges fill at the same rate regardless of battle speed. A higher Speed stat and the Haste buff will make it fill faster. The battle speed setting instead affect how often enemies will attack and how often effects like Regen and Poison procs. Unlike the remaining games with the ATB system, the gauges don't stop during attack/spell animations.
