Also, I'm English and Clive is straight up giving me 'older Northern working class man who visits the pub for a pint of bitter and takes his dog' vibe

Yeah, if anything it's just such a conventional name that it feels weird.

That said, I've had that issue since Castlevania, with series protagonists called Trevor and Simon?

But they dont do duvets!

Glad to see we've got some more info and other bits on the game. Website still only says PS5, nothing about anything else.

Are people who are listing all the fantasy-ass Final Fantasy names intentionally omitting all of the regular ones like Cecil and Zidane? Or the ones that are clearly pseudonyms like Shadow (Clyde) and Lightning (Claire)? Or the lore-friendly ones like... the entire cast of FF14?

For me it gives 'slightly bland, balding middle aged civil servant who suffers from halitosis and has a moderately valuable collection of Victorian porn in his airing cupboard' vibes.
No offense to any Clives in here!

I'm hoping Clive turns out to be Ifrit. There was an underlying sense of tragedy from the first trailer fueling the revenge quest (or at least that was what I picked-up). I think it would be really interesting for the MC to grapple with revenge borne from guilt, since the other scenario I had with the MC needing to strike down his brother doesn't seem to pan out anymore.

I feel like it'll be after the events we see in the trailer. Sure we get some clips of him older but I feel the first part of the game will be younger Clive and then that series of events leads him out into the world. Hopefully we get a pretty long intro period of young Clive tho
I'm feeling it happening early (I don't think they'd make it so obvious now if it was late), and I'm gonna say a nice round ten years.
Based on the story details here, Clive is on a quest of revenge, so probably the time skip happens very early in the story, otherwise there will be no inciting incident for him to go off in a journey. I reckon no more than ten hours as young Clive.

Yeah it makes sense as a prologue. It would be cool though (bare with me lol), to have like earlier calmer moments where you have to ride a chocobo to another kingdom and deliver something. Like in the moments early on before the giant conflict and the wars. If we see a bit of the world, even if it is the prologue or earlier chapters, .. it would make the change later cool. I just cannot wait to explore this world with chocobos, like how XV was. And with an airship. Hopefully.

I think the older Clive looks like such a badass. I cannot wait. The forest in the trailer during the combat looks sick. And we see him older at that point. I think though that it would be cool to go out with Joshua outside of the Rosario city and protect him from monsters as younger Clive.

Ooh I didn't realize Jill meant "child of the gods." What an interesting name choice... combine that with coming from the Northern Territories and her chances of being Shiva's dominant just increased by 95%. Great, now I already have high hopes for her lol.

Freakin' gorgeous. That's a wallpaper. Clive may not have the most unique FF protagonist name but I think he just won. I mean damn.

We do see young CLive fighting the Malboro in the swamp and the goblins. So maybe we do go out just not very far..

Huh. Saw Joshua's art on twitter without a name attached.. definitely thought Joshua was a Josephine from the design. Love the art either way.. beautiful designs. I wish Clive's in-game look was a bit closer to his design.. not a huge fan of his super brooding look, but it's not bad by any means.

Old Clive looks fucking bad. Shame they had to ruin a good character design with a timeskip :/
Hopefully we play young Clive for most of the game.

The art is absolutely stunning! I kinda like Clive as a name... reminds me of the badass sniper from Suikoden.

IIRC the combat designer of DMC worked on this sooooo, maybe?
It's such a bummer that folks like me who can't play twitch based action games well have just aged out I guess. Final Fantasy is probably my favorite franchise since game 1 and the loss of turn based gameplay just kills me.

Character design and story sounds super cool though.

I don't think it will be as hardcore as DMC.

There's nothing more hype than the lead up to a new big SE game! I've missed the theory crafting and anticipation. Helps that I love all of them (FFXIII series, FFXV etc.) These bits of lore will certainly help with the wait, but can it be 2021 info dump time already? ;_;

Visually I like it a lot. Reminds me of pre FF7 in good ways, little bit of Ivalice in there, seems interesting. I'll probably still wait a year to buy it unless it's especially spectacular, but that's just generally my approach to 3rd party exclusives.

I called it since day one that she was going to be Shiva's Dominant and I will die on this hill

This is going to be the best Final Fantasy in the last 20 years and bring the franchise back to its right place, I can feel it in my bones.

I don't feel any particular way about the name Clive but you're all acting like names like Hope and Snow would be better.

Clive is quite the normal sounding name, I'm okay with that. Just so used to Latin, or some name with an elemental like Lighting, Cloud or even one meaning one like Tidus.

Liking the setting synopsis and looking forward to a conflict with 'dark eikons' (which I'm taking a guess is tied to the 'blight' that is mentioned).

The concept art for those cities are really making me hope we get multiple fully explorable towns and cities.FF13 had none, FF15 had tiny little Lastalum and those random pit stops that were nothing...I don't really count Altisia since its only briefly explorable and promptly destroyed. I expect Clive to encounter all the Eikon's so I'm hoping we get a real globetrotting adventure.

I know it's early, I still very much hope Clive is not the only playable character. I want a party of at least 2-3 other characters with different playstyles.

So is the site going to be updated more in the future with more bits of info?

Good intro to the world with the different factions here and how they view the Dominants.

I notice we still don't have a clear idea on what the Blight is supposed to be. My initial guess would be the land dying or aether being corrupted given that magic seems to be very key to the lives of people in this world.

The fact that all the kingdoms seem to be based on giant crystals with the name Drake in their title is giving me the impression that Bahamut might be a really powerful Eikon or the most powerful.

So Clive was just the older son rather than a bastard or something like that. He just didn't get the Eikons powers. That we see him using them later makes me wonder if Joshua dies and they jump to him or if its some sort of bonding thing.

The specific mention of Ifrit being a dark Eikon makes that theory about there being two of each element seem more possible. Perhaps the dark Eikons are all related to this Blight.

Sure it's partly because I'm bad at it, but I also just don't care for that style of gameplay. Like, I bounced off of FF7R after a few hours and just loaded up the original and played through that again. *shrug* I get it, I'm just not the target demographic anymore, it just sucks for me I guess. I'm still excited to hear more, can't help myself :-P maybe this will be the game that get's me into lets plays on youtube?

I'm siding with the theory of there being a second or "dark" as the website puts it Eikon for each nation/element. Would be weird if only Ifrit is the second Eikon of a nation. This also gives a good reason for there to not only be like 5-6 Eikons in the game.

I haven't had the chance to check out the site, but if Clive is 15, does this mean this game takes place over the span of a decade at least? Some of his art makes him look like a man in his mid-20s.

To be fair, there's a lot we don't know about the combat system yet, all the way down to even if we have multiple party members or not. Square just released a really flashy action-oriented Final Fantasy earlier this year that still did a great job of preserving a lot of the core of the classic ATB system at the same time, so it's not impossible for them to pull off, though we need more info on what exactly they're really going for with XVI.

Well this is all STUNNING !!!
I am getting heavy major FF12/Ivalice vibes from the art in OP and world map.
This could be the best FF in a long long time.

So are there only 3 main characters?
I wonder if battle really is only Clive , always?
That's all I'm worried about. I would like party members in some way.
I hope this comes out next Christmas!!
