The French games market generated a record breaking €5.3 billion in 2020, according to trade body SELL.

Overall -

  1. SELL reported a 11.3% growth for the games market year-on-year,
  2. 2.3 million consoles sold in France in 2020, as well as 27.5 million games -- across physical and digital -- and seven million accessories.
  3. Console segment increased 10% year-on-year, now representing 51% of the games market and a value of €2.7 billion.
  4. Digital sales were particularly strong on consoles last year, boosted by COVID-19 restrictions, with a 79% rise compared to 2019.
Mobile -
  • 16% year-on-year to reach a record €1.4 billion in revenue.
  • Games represented 43% of all mobile app downloads in France last year (mobile data courtesy of App Annie).

PC Gaming -
PC gaming had a strong year, particularly supported by growth in hardware (+20%) and accessories (+13%), but software sales were down 1.9% year-on-year. The PC market generated almost €1.2 billion in revenue overall, representing a 9% rise compared to 2019.

Software -

Looking at software across all platforms, games sales represented €1.7 billion in revenue, 38% of which came from physical copies and 36% from digital titles. DLC and microtransactions represented 15% of the overall figure, while subscription services represented 9%.
62% of the software purchased in France in 2020 was digital.

FIFA 21 was the best selling game in France in 2020, with 1.3 million copies shifted including both physical and digital sales. It was followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons with almost 1.1 million units -- this is physical sales only though, as Nintendo doesn't share its digital sales.
In third position, and far behind the top two, was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which shifted 664,792 copies across physical and digital.
It's worth noting that out of the top 20 physical games of 2020 in France (see below), 11 were Nintendo games -- and together those titles sold almost 3.7 million copies.

Digital sales were particularly strong on consoles last year, boosted by COVID-19 restrictions, with a 79% rise compared to 2019.

So we were still a primarily physical market before COVID, It'll be interesting to see if it's going to stabilized at that rate or drop down when things come back to normal.

Thanks for making the thread. Surprising France still had such a large ratio of physical sales before this year.

I think there is a strong chance Animal Crossing was #1 in units if you could include digital for it.

I think there is a strong chance Animal Crossing was #1 in units if you could include digital for it.

Almost a certainty. Digital share outside of Japan has been substantial. USA+Europe aggregate was around 60% before the latest quarter (which didn't add enough sales volume to further over the needle substantially one way or the other).

Nintendo during Q1 results on bottom of page 11 (when sell-through was >20M and shipment was >22M):

Vahgp9e.png

US + EUR + JP = ~50%. Since we know JP shipments and we know max possible digital in JP (assume no inventory at end of quarters), we can come up with a minimum % for US + EUR if we make an assumption for how much shipments were outside of US/EUR/JP.

They said something similar in Q4 FY19 when ACNH launched as well. They didn't specify for FY20 Q2 per my memory, but I'm scouring the report now.

So here's the breakdown, with the working assumption being % of sales coming from outside of those three regions. I used three scenarios (10% / 15% / 20% for OTHER) and broke down the splits by quarter so far (using Famitsu LTD data for Week 13 / 26 / 39). My 59% was lower than this breakdown. The lowest figure I get now is 60% if Other is only 10%.

This is dig as a % of shipments, so you'd have to remove the inventory buffer again, but that just inflates the % even further.

GTA V still selling 600k on it's ninth year on the market.

And people were wondering why Sony chose it to open their PS5 conference last year. GTA VI isn't coming before 2025 at the earliest.

Although Nintendo clearly dominated in France last year, and will continue to do so in the coming year(s), seeing the likes of Miles Morales, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II is genuinely fantastic to see too.

Once again, Xbox is non-existent, as usual.

I think there is a strong chance Animal Crossing was #1 in units if you could include digital for it.

There's absolutely no doubt about this ... 😊

Nintendo Dominated Heavily Entire Year, easily their strongest market in EU
Yeah, and looking at the detailed report (I love these), Nintendo software seems underreported ?
I'm not seeing a difference between physical only and physical + digital, like between pages 20 and 22. I've only taken a glance at the whole thing, so I might have missed a methodological caveat somewhere when it comes to Nintendo digital games.

We need to relook into digital ratio of Nintendo , they Earning Reports have it in revenue and they include mtx, dlc and digital only games etc in thee ratio.

Only for Q1 Quarter Digital will be as per shared in that earning

Do those digital sales include digital only titles, or just games that are available both physically and digitally? Digital sales are going to be heavily skewed if it includes both.

Cyberpunk 2077 published by Bandai Namco? Weird xD

Two FIFA and two Call of Duty games, and GTA always there.

Also, interesting how only Minecraft, TLoU2 and AC Valhalla rise on the ranking without digital sales (excluding Nintendo games, of course).

We can, but this breakdown was based on their direct AC quotes, not from the aggregate digital number reporting later on in the slides.

~55-60% digital for ACNH in France would put the total around 2.4-2.7M. Doesn't seem outlandish to me that France represents 7.7-8.5% of sales for a >31M seller. It's their strongest EU market isn't it?

Unlikely since AC launched at the begining of the 1st lockdown.

Factoring digital and bundles, the game is definitely above 2m in France.

Talking about digital only and the digital % of every country is different, it is possible and you can make argument of something like 30 to 40%, but 60% is unrealistic, even if at the beggining of the pandemic it could have been that high.

I am expecting it to be between 40% and 50%.

During the 1st lockdown it should have been even higher than 60%. Amazon was not able to deliver games at one point.

It is more likely that the digital % is between 20 to 30%.

Did you see the breakdown in my earlier post? US + Europe + Japan were around 50% digital when sales were at ~22M, and we know at that time that the Japan component was in the 25-30% digital range, meaning US+Europe were well over 50%.

In order for the US+Europe+JP digital % to drop under 30%, the next 9M units after 22M would have to be 100% physical. And this still would only be enough to get US+Europe down to ~35%.

About this, the best selling Xbox One game in France for 2020 was FIFA 21 with 7,7M€ in sales. The same game on PS4 did 49,5M€.

One thing that need to be highlighted is Ghost of Tsushima being one of the rare new IP in those annual top 20, after Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017 and Days Gone in 2019.

I'd be interested to see how much minecraft has sold on switch alone WW. It looks like the only game that can actually compare to Nintendo's games WW on the switch.

Your report only accounts for a period between April and June, pick of the pandemic, cant use that data and apply to the rest of the year, if you have the other quarters that i can see and i will change my prediction.
