One of the side effects is that all your Funi-bought digital copies are gonna go poof on April 2 because CR doesn't support digital copies. Lots of other info in the article.
This would bug me more if I ever actually used any of my Funimation digital codes, but it's still crappy.

This blurb really makes one furious "We understand you may have concerns" my ass. Trying to turn this answer into an ad for Crunchyroll halfway through is fucking absurd
"We're not giving you anything and nobody can make us, but hey you can sign up to watch other stuff you still won't own!"

Sony gobbling up as many anime distributors as they could has easily been one of the worst things to happen to the industry.

That is a substantial price hike, and feels overdoing it.

Hope this backfires on them because doubling the price basically, wth.
The person should probably edit that post and/or remove it. The guy who tweeted it out said he had a grandfathered price at Funimation and they were switching him to the Ultra Fan or whatever is the most expensive tier of CR right now. There is still (for now) a cheaper baseline option.

I miss it already (since I dropped it in lieu of Crunchyroll after the merger process started). It was far from a perfect app, but it was a far better app than Crunchyroll which after like 2 years of use has only got slightly less shit, and is still 100% not available on my TV. I hate having to turn on my PS5 just to watch anime. The worse app won, sadly.

It's still wild to me that Crunchyroll went from a site that linked pirate fan sub streams to legitimate streaming site, to essentially controlling the North American anime market. Like how did this even happen?

IIRC it was worse, they basically stole fansubs without permission from the owning company or the fansubbers and aired them, right?

It's been so long that I don't remember exactly, but I don't recall them hosting anything directly on their site. Maybe they did hosting later as they were trying to go legit. Either way it was all shady.

We need regulations to help protect people's digital purchases... the ability for companies to just let it all go up in smoke is bullshit to the extreme. And the worst part is, people treat this like it's a given. "You bought it at a digital store, so you don't really own it" Well, let's fix that.

I don't think we have to worry about apple or google locking people out of their purchases for a long time yet, but some of these outliers like vudu... you never know when they could decide to close up shop and then what do people do with all those 'purchases' they made?

That fucking price hike... Arrogant Sony is back.
I know you're at least partially joking with the arrogant Sony quip, but it's not really a price hike. I have explained this several times in this thread but I'll do it one final time in more detail.

Funimation had two service tiers:
Premium at 7.99/month, 79.99/year
Premium Plus at 9.99/month, 99.99/year

Crunchyroll has three service tiers:
Fan at 7.99/month, 79.99/year (with purchase of a gift card available in their store, otherwise you can only subscribe monthly)
Mega Fan at 9.99/month
Ultimate Fan at 14.99/month

It is a modest price hike if you were on a grandfathered plan at Funimation, but that is mainly because in some cases they are moving you to the MIDDLE tier of Crunchyroll, not the cheapest tier. They were also discounting that at $99.99 for a year which is a plan that can no longer be signed up for, but I digress. Simply cancel and sub at FAN to receive pricing that is equivalent to Funimation Premium (though, admittedly still a little higher than the grandfathered older plan that hasn't existed for years).

Yep. This all-digital future can fuck right off. These corporations do not care at all.
But those digital copies were only included with physical media, so this is a moot point. Then removing the digital copy is an inconvenience but nowhere near as bad as a service like Netflix or Vudu doing the same thing since you still have your copy somewhere.

Yeah fair, and I was joking yes haha. ÂŁ60 for the year in the UK, so gotta wait and see how much it'll go up here.

Me personally, all my digital copies came from physical blurays that I bought. (Though I am slightly annoyed because a few came with extra OVAs that aren't streamable, but were made available digitally, so I gotta dig out my Blurays if I want to watch those particular episodes again.)

HOWEVER, with that said....

Funimation DID have a pure digital storefront for those who wanted to purchase episodes directly. Now, did enough people partake in it to warrant significant blowback? Based on the obvious statement they released, doubtful.

Nah. It's still bad for consumers regardless, so I thoroughly disagree.

I'm also mad they went with the CR app.

The only good thing about Crunchyroll is it allowed* you to screen capture video with IOS. So I could send clips to my friends as responses over text and messengers. Like Luffy meeting Sabo as a "reaction gif with sound".

*maybe still does, like Hi-Dive, but I only watch on my TV these days when I'm subbed.

Aren't people begging for streaming consolidation so there are less services though? One of the biggest complaints people say today is that there are too many streaming services. Hmm, it's almost like how people begged for a la carte that they didn't realize what they were asking for....

Nailed it.

Please move Adolescence of Utena to CR before you die. Putting up with the Funimation player to watch that was so awful.

It's crap like this that makes me a physical media die-hard. My only problem is that I don't have the money to collect stuff like I used to, since I've been spending the past year and a half paying off credit card debt (having to replace almost every major appliance within a six-month span isn't cheap).

Until CR finally announces a release of the dub on their service, yes.

Yup. It will vanish off of US-legal services until whatever hold up Funi's had with moving content over to CR (be it contractual or logistical) clears up enough for Sgt. Frog to re-emerge.

Discotek actually got the license to Sgt. Frog now actually so it's not guaranteed.

Really appreciate all the responses!!

*raises the black flags*
ahoy mateys it is.

Also for anyone lurking who is 30-35 and grew up anime adjacent or a big fan, Sgt Frog is a 10/10 for referential humor to 2000s life and Gunpla

And thanks to the comment section of that Ars article, I found a currently up-to-date list of what's still just on Funimation and not on Crunchyroll.

docs.google.com

Funimation.com NA Streaming Content Not Moved To Crunchyroll

Sublicense Live Action Sub not streaming/Dub only Sub only through DC Last update 04/2024 Join the CR discord at Discord.gg/crunchyroll .hack//Legend of the Twilight. (sub/dub) .hack//Quantum (sub/dub) .hack//Roots (sub/dub) A Certain Magical Index II (dub) A Certain Magical Index movie (dub) ...

It's extensive, and apparently nothing's moved over since July of last year.

Damn, get fucked if you had a digital copy of any Funimation stuff.

Though, Funimation's digital copy system was always trash. Glad they eventually just started going with Movies Anywhere iirc.

I don't think they did go with Movies Anywhere, did they? At least not with digital copies included with the disks. And I think I bought DBS Super Hero digitally and it's not on MA.

I'm probably wrong then. What digital service did the DBS Super Hero copy come with?

I bought it digitally on itunes, I think, but I think the "normal" physical copy only came with Blu+DVD or 4k+Blu and no included digital copy. I'm not even sure what the last thing they sold with a digital copy is. I know DBS Broly came with a digital copy because I have that. Well I guess I had that, it's going away soon... :(

Plus they do the thing with the digital where you have to buy sub and dub separately which always ticks me off.

edited to add: actually, logging in with my defunct Funimation account, I see my digital copies under my account but I can't find where the movies are or how to play them.

Awful news for people who bought digital films. I sense a possible lawsuit incoming involving that. I've also had problems using Crunchyroll and doubt this merge will help it at all.

Personally have not been a fan of Funimation since they take the lazy way out with physical media transfers. It's inconceivable to me that there is not a definitive version physical release of DBZ after all these years. Let alone whatever other animes they blew off.

I just got a notice from crunchyroll that they finally have the DB Super dub, though I haven't checked myself.

Whoever owns Crunchyroll should be on damage control making sure people are getting access to their shit somehow.

Also, 82% price increase? Neat!

Won't sub for a while prob. Gotta wait for a bunch of shows to come back anyway.

I think that price increase is basically off of grandfathered Funimation accounts that had discounts (I had one of those before), right?

Also the licensing thing I could understand for stuff like Viz where they have their own platform, but I'm kind of surprised by some of those omissions like Escaflowne and Eureka 7.

Think the full picture is actually worse than this depending on your region

I'm in UK and some stuff I want to watch only on Funi isn't on that list (eg Clannad)
Best of it is any shows subscriber locked are completely inaccessible now unless you happen to still be a current subscriber
