The post chain seems to indicate that it's an inside joke and Jeff Lawson, a co-founder of Twilio, is the buyer.

So basically the Onion bought their independence with the help of Jeff Lawson. Great to see the writing staff break out of G/O Media, especially when they were on the chopping block iirc.
