Gotta keep that big January energy going.
As someone that bounces between games, I welcome our new subscription overlords.

Water is wet. Jim Ryan said it out loud for Pete's sake.
I don't know if MS buys anyone else this year though? Maybe next.
Yes Embracer and Tencent starting the acquistion spree back in 2012 and 2016 is due to Game Pass.
Lmao
They just dropped $70 billion in cash, and the deal has a lot of steps to go through before it clears. I think they're done with acquisitions of that size for at least 2 years.
- A rapidly expanding industry where the potential return in revenue makes large acquisitions feasible
- Ballooning game development and marketing costs where financial stability via acquisition is more desirable than relying on partnerships and agreements between companies that may not be as financially stable and may collapse
- A userbase that increasingly demands more from the content providers, to a level that is borderline unsustainable. "Better graphics, bigger games, greater scale, presentation and marketing more inline with big-box movies, no bugs or else we will drown your game in so much negativity that your company might not even survive the fallout"
- The logical endgame of being an industry headed by international multimedia conglomerates for the latter of 3 decades. No company of that size will ever be comfortable with the "status quo", especially with the potential revenue to be made if they are the dominant force in the industry.
Fact of the matter is that all of what you see now was already in motion, most didn't notice it though because it didn't personally effect them until now. The intent and strategies have always been there, and have always been in play. The only thing that changed is the scale. We went from large toy companies to large multimedia companies. And we will go from large multimedia companies to large tech giants (Meta, Amazon, Google) There is, frankly, a surprising amount of naïveté being displayed in this thread.
Sony, please buy square enix, it makes perfect sense. FF is PlayStation to me. If Microsoft buys them, I'm done with gaming. I just cant enjoy Microsoft games and systems for some reason. Microsoft has a MMO in warcraft, Sony you can have one in ff14. I read somewhere that a Japanese company can't be sold outside of Japan, is there any truth to this?

Why would Squeeenix sell Crystal?Already done. But yes, MS will grab another pub once the ABK deal is done. If MS buy others before then, it'll likely be IOI (valuable Hitman I.P fits within GP model) and Crystal Dynamics.
It would be absolutely awful to have Deus Ex locked away in the Sony vault forever.Sony, please buy square enix, it makes perfect sense. FF is PlayStation to me. I don't like the way things have been trending, but if there is one company I "wish" would get picked up by someone it would be Konami. The incompetence with the amount of IP's that company has should not be squandered, even if it must mean exclusivety to one platform or another.
I would make a joke about Google's new venture "Google Casino", but Stadia is already out of the gamedev businessKonami is mainly in the gambling business these days, so while I could see their IP maybe being sold off one day, I don't think any of the console manufacturers are really that into diversifying into Konami's slot machine business. Maybe I'm wrong though.
Treasure is pretty much just one guy in an office, and Vanillaware games don't exactly pull Endgame numbers in the west
lmao..Sometimes this whole site just makes me cringe.
I hope this is a fake post, but I've seen enough of this to guess that it's not.
I don't think it benefits them, but all I can say is now I'm rooting for MS to pick up Square Enix, or even just Final Fantasy, just to see the meltdowns. This idea that Final Fantasy could be great if Sony picks it up, but that it would be awful if Microsoft buys it, is just...I'm not trying to call you out in particular...but come on. Brand loyalty is fucking gross. They are corporations. Not your friends.
Also, MS bought Tango Gameworks as part of the Bethesda deal, so yes, Japanses companies can be sold outside of Japan, and Microsoft only bought them so they could brush up their Japanese for when they buy SE.
FromSoft is owned by Kadokawa, which is a Japanese Media conglomerate.
Agreed. Would they even buy a Sega or Konami though? They just dropped $70 billion in cash, and the deal has a lot of steps to go through before it clears. I think they're done with acquisitions of that size for at least 2 years.
So you want a company to leave the platform most of their playerbase is on just to spite some people on this site?Sometimes this whole site just makes me cringe.

You're spot on, no one is gonna buy all of Konami, at most they would sell off their gaming division with probably retaining the IP rights for gambling.Konami is mainly in the gambling business these days, so while I could see their IP maybe being sold off one day, I don't think any of the console manufacturers are really that into diversifying into Konami's slot machine business. Maybe I'm wrong though.
There is no chance Kadokawa would sell it off? They don't publish the games and doesn't look to be expanding further into this market. I don't know how much they paid to acquire FromSoftware back in 2014/15, but I imagine the return would be pretty damn good.FromSoft is owned by Kadokawa, which is a Japanese Media conglomerate.
Whomever wants From, would probably need to buy Kadokawa

They wouldn't be leaving their playerbase behind. Just the one's who obviously don't like their games enough to play on whatever platforms they release their games on. Like if you say "I only like Square Enix games, but I'm not going to play them if I can't play them on the one console that I'm loyal too", then I personally don't believe you like Square Enix games all that much.
I'm also old enough to remember Square leaving the platform where almost all of their player base was (Super Nintendo), and jumping ship to Sony, so yeah...I'd like to relive those meltdowns again. TBF, SE still went on to make great games (and some really bad ones too).
I would like for it to stay multi-platform, but if one of Microsoft or PlayStation was to buy them, I would want it to be Sony. It's not brand loyalty, I bought a 360 and returned it the next day. I just hated everything about it and the controller. Yes there is a special place in my heart for Sony, ff7 was my first ever ff game on ps1. I continued playing them on ps2,ps3,ps4 and now PS5. Just after Christmas, I bought a series x. Again I hated everything about it, the layout is horrible, game pass is not all that like people let on. I sold the series x two days later. I have game pass to August 2024. Luckily I have a pc and I have only downloaded halo and deleted it after a few hours as I thought it sucked. I have not touched game pass for over a month. Most of the games on it doesn't interest me.
I have spent most of my gaming life on PlayStation, I am invested heavily in their ecosystem. I reckon over the last 10 years I have spent over 10,000 pounds on games. I also love trophies and have over 200 plats, yes Xbox has achievements but in my opinion trophies are better, yes I know they are similar but earning a plat feels so much rewarding to me and trophies have established themselves in my gaming. I know this is not a big deal to many, but the PlayStation controller is better in my opinion, maybe I'm just used to it as I have gamed on PlayStation. The Xbox controller is good, and surprisingly it felt comfortable in my hands, and I know this is a personal problem I can't train myself to get use to the button layout on the Xbox controller. I know It's because I'm used to PlayStation button layout. I'm coming 40 this year and my brain/memory is not what is used to be. I can't game on a PlayStation controller then switch to an Xbox controller, it just won't click.
I will repeat this is not brand loyalty, I don't like Xbox, the layout is horrible compared to PlayStation, I found this to be one of many reasons why I can't switch between the two system, the controller being another issue and the games too, I was really not impressed with game pass. So hopefully you can understand why I would want Sony to buy square enix and not Microsoft, if it was the latter, and they kept ff off PlayStation, A series that I love, I have enjoyed every ff game from 7 upwards. I have over 1500 hours into ff14. I am not letting Microsoft force me to join their ecosystem if they were to acquire square enix. Yes, I would love them to stay multi, which means I get to enjoy ff on a system that I enjoy. The chances are if Microsoft buys square, future ff games will only be on Xbox/ game pass.

I'd just get it on PC but there's no reason like CD vs cartridge for them to move this time. Besides I'd rather they just stay multiplat but no reason to inconvenience people or make them move for one game. They wouldn't be leaving their playerbase behind. Steam games yes, I didn't know game pass on pc supported PS5 controller? This would solve the button layout? Would the game change like press A, but if I have PS5 controller it will say press X?

I think you are missing my point. IP is not the end all and be all of why companies acquire other companies. Nintendo has for the most part gone for talent and or technical acquisitions. Square and capcom would be bad targets for them because they would bring talent that is useless for the current Nintendo ecosystem. And they would run the risk of bleeding that talent to other companies and devaluing their investment. It wouldn't really matter what they developers, you, or I want in a scenario where Nintendo acquires one of them. Much in the same way it doesn't really matter what playstation CoD fans or developers want, in a few years they're gonna have to prioritize/get an xbox.
I know. But I mean this year or next.Imo, if a publisher is going to get acquired, I think they would know that right now is not the best time to get the best price, they'll wait until MS is finished with the Activision Blizzard acquisition to jack up the price.
Konami, I have no idea why people are suggesting that company, but for Sega, they address the gap that MS has with their service.
So Sega has a lot of synergies with MS, hence why people are expecting MS to acquire them.
- E rated content
- JRPG content
- PC specific games
- Lots of IPs
Yep lol.Narrator: It was brand loyalty. I will repeat this was brand loyalty.
