God of War passes Zelda: BOTW for GOTY Awards

With the announcement at the DICE awards today, God of War has now achieved 190 GOTY awards vs the 189 Zelda achieved.

Pretty stellar achievement and it now moves to 4th on the list behind The Witcher, Skyrim and The Last of Us. It's the most decorated exclusive title this gen and second ever behind TLOU.

Massive congrats to Cory, Sony and all the team. Here's the all time list:

I still think TLOU's 249 in the year of Bioshock and GTA5 being the most impressive of the lot. Like I shudder to imagine how much would it have dominated if it had come out in any other year. Its madness.

Man, this whole list just reminds me that people put more value in presentation than good solid game design.

Wouldn't it make more sense to count it as a percentage of the awards that year, rather than the raw number? Anyone willing to do that calculation?

Worth mentioning there are more awards listed for 2018 than 2017, perhaps due to the rather heated thread here that the blog references.

God of War has serious issues with its camera, lack of depth in its combat system, reuse of enemies, and over-linearity. It's pretty, but as an action game it's got serious shortcomings compared to multiple games in its own genre.

Yeah, was a good year. Witcher 3 also had a really strong year of competition with Bloodborne and MGSV.

Man, when you lay it all out like that, Sony has 4 of the highest awarded games of their respective years in the last 10 years. 3 of them from Naughty Dog.

That's wild.

For reference, percentage wise, BOTW is at 56.76% of 2017 GOTYs listed on gotypicks, while God of War is at 50.67% of 2018's GOTYs. Haven't counted the other years.

SMO wasn't even the second highest awarded game of 2017. Horizon won 52 (26 from critics and 26 from readers' choice) while Odyssey won 26 (24 critics, 2 readers).

Many more awards have been handed out in 2018 compared to 2017, so we're kind of comparing apples to oranges when strictly talking # of honors given. Congrats to SSM for creating a great game that resonated with so many people.

I agree,was a new exclusive against two giants IPs,one of them GTA V,probably the most hyped game ever.Imagine if was released in 2014 or 2012.
