I have no issues with this myself, but curious what ERA thinks? Hasan himself is extremely progressive supporting stronger safety nets, higher taxes, and more public investment.

Celebrities and sports stars do the same and no one minds their pockets.

Can you be an ardent progressive and also enjoy the finer things life affords?

Also, for those unaware, he's Cenk of the Young Turks, nephew.

Politicians are way worse, they should be the people people get mad at.

Dude lives in LA, housing in LA is expensive. There's nothing wrong with this and the people clawing at it trying to take picks at him because of it are just looking for reasons to get at Hasan.

What's the house like? A pricetag alone isn't really meaningful given how insane the housing market is

He can do whatever he wants, and his fans should know better. the large majority of people on this planet are motivated by self interest, no matter what their political leanings are. as long as he pays taxes, there's nothing controversial about this.

Hasan has always come off pretty uninformed and in it for the money, so this isn't a surprise. Think most of us have seen his pickup artist videos back when that was a thing. All around never liked the guy and the fame hes gotten recently has been very odd.

I guess it really depends if he has been shown to be a grifter and thats why he takes the stance he does. If he has made money because capitalist organisations are paying him to speak then i have not a lot of issue with it. I daresay there are scenarios where he puts his money where his mouth is and the fact he highlights these causes will undoubtedly do some level of good. Purity tests in general are a shitty idea tbh.

I think it is also that his fans skew very young. Many probably work lower entry level jobs and are saddled with student loans. I could see the sense of "betrayal" here although I don't agree with it. Loss of solidarity in this case.

Also, Hasan is not a flashy guy by any means.

What kind of house?

Like in Taipei and Kaohsiung, the same type of place, price can be 2x~5x or more depending on location.

the guy is wealthy through twitch sponsorships and donations. people give him their money freely.

if he wants to buy an expensive house in an uber-expensive market, he has every right to. we also don't know if and how much he donates to charities. i'm assuming he's an advocate and not a grifter.

Is it a bit expensive? For sure, but it is LA.
But he does his own twitch show which is massively popular. AFAIK he isn't exploiting anyone's labor, dodging taxes, or generally getting his money through unethical means.
I do think the optics from him being a leftist figurehead is a bit bad, but ultimately I don't think he's done anything wrong.

Nye Bevan had it right. 'Only the best for the working class'.

The puritanism of certain elements of the left is a very old thing, and never very edifying (and is the easiest, most reductive goal for the right to aim at: SEE, HE HAS NEW SHOES. HYPOCRITE). That said, using wealth in the right way is of course part of it all.

I think it's a bit weird that any person supporting leftist ideas has to somehow be miserable financially or at least it's the sentiment I'm getting from this backlash.

Also I'm fairly certain he chose a relatively big house because his mom is gonna live with him.

It's an expensive area and considering the house, the price makes sense. It's one of those things where it feels like people are overreacting because they have no grasp on the reality of the market. It doesn't make him a hypocrite or anything.

Good for Hasan, he'll pay his taxes unlike many high millionaires
Guy streams more than anyone I've ever seen and I've watched a shitload of streams in the last 5 years, barely takes time off, reports and comments on literally anything and everything related to what his audience is interested in, beyond everything he's a good streamer

I see no issue with it, sure it's ironic but as long as he would be willing to being taxed higher since he's wealthy I don't really see the problem with it.

Can sense some irony but as long as Hasan actually pays his taxes, then he's doing better than most that he speaks against.

Let's be real, in the end these types are usually in it for the money, fame or power. It's his money to do with as he pleases but he was never someone I saw as the starving artist

I mean Matt Damon has been a liberal champion in Hollywood for decades and only just learned this year that calling people gay slurs is a shitty thing to do, so I'll just say the bar is particularly lowered for what I expect from lefty talking heads.

For Hasan though, it's been a minute since I've watched him but I feel like he's always kinda been the anti-label lefty. Like he mocks conservative talking points because he thinks they're dumb and illogical, not because he's a dyed in the wool socialist. For as much as I hear him talk about liberal politics I don't usually hear him extolling the wrongs of capitalism. Again, that could just be because I don't watch his stream all that much. But if the guy wants to buy a house, let him.

As long as he still fully supports leftist politics and idk, pay his taxes in full, he can do what he wants with his money.

Unless he is dodging taxes or exploiting workers then who cares
If you don't think he's taking advantage of tax loopholes, I don't know what to tell you. All people of means do. I would do the same.

Again, I'm not hating on the guy, but I do feel Leftist Twitter is a bit unrealistic.

If he pays his taxes and whatever who gives a shit. I think it's more fucked up people know where and what his house looks like two seconds after he bought it tbh

He is a big entertainer who earns big entertainer money so of course he buys stuff like this.
There is nothing abnormal about this.

Also he works his ass off god forbid he enjoys the fruits of his labor? Who says he doesnt donate to good causes?
I think he can do whatever he wants with his money, but there's an argument to be made that he didn't need to spend $2.7M on a house, especially considering his occupation he can do anywhere in the world so even the "LA expensive" point doesn't really hold up.

I think people expect someone with politics like his to be living more modestly, whether that's right or wrong the optics are gonna look bad.

Are people mad because they donated money to him and are watching him use it for his own personal wishes rather than the collectives?
