Honda recalls 1.1 million vehicles in second attempt at air bag fix (Washington Post)

Honda recalls 1.2M more vehicles with dangerous air bags (Yahoo/AP)

In short, repairs made under a previous airbag recall used a part that's recently been found to be faulty, necessitating a second repair on some vehicles. Details:
Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion and inflate air bags in a collision. But the chemical can deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures and humidity and blow apart a metal canister, spewing out shrapnel. At least 23 people have been killed by the company's inflators and hundreds more injured.

The inflators in the Tuesday recall contain a moisture-absorbing chemical called a desiccant that was added to keep the ammonium nitrate stable. They were believed to be safe and were never part of the broader recall. They had even been used to replace older inflators under recalls that began in 2014.
The affected model years include:
The recall covers certain Honda and Acura models largely in the U.S. and Canada. Included are the 2001 to 2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, the 2001 to 2005 Civic, the 2002 to 2007 and 2010 and 2011 CR-V, the 2003 to 2011 Element, the 2007 Fit, the 2002 to 2004 Odyssey, the 2003 to 2008 Pilot, and the 2006 to 2014 Ridgeline pickup. Also included are certain 2003 Acura 3.2CL cars, as well as the 2013 to 2016 ILX, the 2003 to 2006 MDX, the 2007 to 2016 RDX, the 2002 to 2003 3.2TL, the 2004 to 2006 and 2009 to 2014 TL, and the 2010 to 2013 ZDX.

NHTSA said not all vehicles that received replacement air bag inflators are affected. Some had replacement parts from other manufacturers that are safe. The agency urged owners to check for open recalls by keying in their 17-digit vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website www.nhtsa.gov/recalls .

Damn, this is such a huge recall. Should be 40m+ vehicles affected as of now?

One of the two largest airbag suppliers in the world and they were forced to be sold to a tiny competitor.

This is for the Takata bags right? I got this again for my Mustang, already replaced both of them once, now they tell me they need to replace them again. It's a right pain in the ass, kinda wish to see Takata go out of business.

They have. They have been sold to a much much smaller company.

Market share has also dropped from 22% to 10%.

This is only in the US? Because Accords, Civics, and CR-Vs are everywhere.
The AP article references "North and Central America." The faulty part was made at a Takata factory in Mexico. I assume Honda sourced airbag parts from other manufacturers/plants in other territories...

I hope they did since the WP article said that Takata was aware of the failures since 2004 but they did not inform the safety regulators. If that was in the US then it's possible that they didn't inform other markets as well especially the ones that aren't strict with their regulations.

There have been various Takata-related recalls, across a wide variety of manufacturers, happening since 2013. This most recent recall is due to a problem with the repair done during a previous recall.

I have a 2007 Accord, so I guess I'll be affected. VIN didn't come up with anything yet though.

I'm driving with a friend so she can pick up a 2016 Civic she just bought so I'm glad that isn't on this list.

Looks like hubby's car will be going in again. Annoying because it's 11.5 years old and extremely reliable other than the bullshit recalls.

CRV owner here, I'll have to check my vin later to see if my car is included.

4? years ago when my driver side airbag was first recalled the replacement part was backordered so the dealership paid for a rental car for over 3 months, and then paid for a tow to take my CRV from my driveway to the repair shop. They really didn't want me driving that thing.
