Atmosphere is extremely important, and by serving the story it is implemented best. There can be great atmospheric non-horror based games.
Like Shadow of the Colossus where the atmosphere makes you feel completely insignificant in this massive world.

Bioshock with the location of Rapture being so tantamount to the theme of the overall game.

And I would say Castlevania: Symphony of the night, which just exudes atmospheric style.

Evidently not important at all. Hardly any games bother with simulating pressure and air resistance in their physics engines.
