These cops have worked at every level of American law enforcement, from tiny, rural sheriff's departments to the largest agencies in the country, such as the Los Angeles and New York police departments. They work in jails and schools and airports, on boats and trains and in patrol cars. And, Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting discovered, they also read and contribute to groups such as "White Lives Matter" and "DEATH TO ISLAM UNDERCOVER."

The groups cover a range of extremist ideologies. Some present themselves publicly as being dedicated to benign historical discussion of the Confederacy, but are replete with racism inside. Some trade in anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant memes. Some are openly Islamophobic. And almost 150 of the officers we found are involved with violent anti-government groups such as the Oath Keepers and Three Percenters.

U.S. law enforcement agencies, many of which have deeply troubled histories of discrimination, have long been accused of connections between officers and extremist groups. At the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, marchers flew a "Blue Lives Matter" flag alongside anti-Semitic and white supremacist messages. In Portland, Oregon, police officers were found to have been texting with a far-right group that regularly hosts white supremacists and white nationalists at its rallies. A classified FBI Counterterrorism Policy Guide from April 2015, obtained by The Intercept, warned that white supremacists and other far-right groups had infiltratedAmerican law enforcement.

In a hearing to appeal his firing, Thomas said he didn't realize he was a member of the closed group and defended his behavior. "If you remove the black female out of the picture, what's racist about it?" he said. The Harris County Sheriff's Civil Service Commission upheld his firing.

To find cops with connections to extremist groups, we built lists of two different types of Facebook users: members of extremist groups and members of police groups.

We wrote software to download these lists directly from Facebook, something the platform allowed at the time. In mid-2018, in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal and after we already had downloaded our data, Facebook shut down the ability to download membership lists from groups. Then we ran those two datasets against each other to find users who were members of at least one law enforcement group and one far-right group.

We got 14,000 hits.

Just a few bad apples. Definitely not spoiling the bunch.
And Facebook is doing a great job moderating content.

An institution that existed in the first place to catch runaway slaves? Well I never....

The entire institution is racist and 90%+ cops are bad. Either for actively supporting this stuff or ignoring it and allowing it to happen.

There are a few I am aware of that have spoke out and as a result have been threatened, attacked, and harassed. Those individuals I respect.

The entire "justice" system in the US needs an extreme overhaul. But so do the rest of the systems. They prop each other up.
Couldn't agree more. This is why we need someone crazy like Bernie Sanders or perhaps Elizabeth Warren who are really going to shake shit up. But perhaps not now...the goal is to take Trump out of office first. Then onto phase 2.

Ironically, I do feel any systematic reform will involve creating a taskforce of cop-cops to cop the cops so you get into an awkward position where you keep needing new cops to cop the old cops.

Also shut Facebook down.

Nothing until you either:

A) Go to war with the police (bloody and it will get changes but it's not recommended)
B) Fill up the senate and Presidency with democrats who actually want to make a change to reform the police.
C) Boycott key markets as Minorities united to hurt the pockets of rich donors who has no choice but to force Democrats/Republicans to make police reform.

C) Will make the changes really quick...hurt this country's money and watch as Republicans and Democrats get in line and make changes. Good luck on having everyone united on one front. Never mind that the government will rather assassinate anyone who would try to be the next leader (aka Martin Luther King...etc) to make this work on a national scale.

B) Is harder since these red states are filled with racist that would rather die before helping minorities.

A) This will lead to a massive civil war...this will bring a great depression on the country. This will happen if the conflicts are not getting resolved and the violence on minorities gets worse as the years go by.

We need some way to actually fire these people without pay. There are just so many protections in place, it's ridiculous and depressing.

Yes...but state level reforms may be the better platform than the Presidency/Congress. Put pressure on state legislatures to reform the police. This will of course probably only be viable in Blue states but something is better than nothing.

I like your ideas. I m down for A if anyone wants to organize this. There is too much injustice in America justice system and sometimes violence is the best answer. I am good at tactical warfare so, I know I will be a real asset to the resistance. Joke aside before the fbi start tracking me..

C is perhaps realistic. As you stated with B, these red states don't care about minorities.

Yea, but you can't have Minorities piling up in blue states. That will definitely lead to a Civil War. IF we can get state level reform on red states first, then this country will be on the right track of redemption.

im waiting for another cop sympathizer to come in this thread and start using that 'not all cops' bullshit they keep parroting. Between shit like this and officers literally threatening to kill people over a fucking barbie how long until they wake up and read the room?

Remember that thread where cops were escorting nazis, some of us were saying what's the difference between the two, and some posters were crying about that statement? Where are they now?

It's deeply ingrained in the system. Individuals with those tendencies are drawn to it, who then continue to perpetrate it.

Hundreds of racists on facebook revealed as members of an extremist paramilitary group.

Honestly though, I have less problems with racists that avoid me or leave me the fuck alone, than I do with these power-tripping murderers protected by the state.
