I still replay the original Tomb Raider games once in a while and think they look incredibly atmospheric. I like the "accidentally surreal" look and feel of the levels and everything.

MegaMan Legends might be one of the most beautiful games of all time honestly.

Grew up with the n64, but oddly feel more nostalgic for the ps1. Something about the esthetic of the ps1 is just so eye catching for me. Specially squares output at the time. Their 3d games look so damn good still

Also love Crash 2 and 3. Both of those still look great in motion.

This is what always gets lost in these type of threads. Those images in the OP are 4k uprezzed
100% this the games were made for crt tvs in mind and modern displays don't blend the colours the way crts did and just show them as raw, which isnt what the artists intent were as as they were designed for the tech at the time. CRTs due to their tech devs took advantage of it in many different ways. Take that out now and people see them as raw hi res and they look weird to me like that

In the 90s i had a pc shared with my brother, with a 3D accelerator like Riva tnt from nvidia. I thought 3D games on my friends PS1 looked like shit even in the 90s.

The generation after is when 3D games actually started to look decent or good on console. PS2 was a huge step up in graphics.

For me, I got a top spec pc in 1995 and the visuals were way behind ps1 which launched 1994/95..games like Wipeout, tomb raider etc looked way worse. It was only when 3dfx cards became mainstream around the time of quake 2, a few years later, that my pc got ahead.

Man, that leap from snes to 32 bit era and proper 3d games was magical at the time.

Really want a remaster of the Legends duology, I hope they don't mess up the aesthetic if they do.

God it's so weird. I still think the 32bit PS1 is the ugliest generation since the Atari (sorry, charming and cute but pretty hard to go back to) but there were SO MANY BANGER games that this thread makes me super emotional.

Of course, since it was my life from age 17-22, hugely formative years, it's hard NOT to get emotional. Being a gamer, you sometimes mark time by the games.

Such excellent GIFs.

That Gundam game looks really good - nice paper doll animation work.

I had Bust-a-Groove as a kid, too - not enough music games have people interactively dancing in them, especially considering DDR Max was all about dancing and did so well monetarily at the time.

Excellent lighting on that Vagrant Story gif, of course, too - love how they faked the rim lighting.

I'll love the PS1 and Saturn aesthetic forever because I think unfiltered textures are the closest thing to pixel art in 3D

I much prefer the look of raw upscaled 240p for both PS1 and N64, where it's a kind of 'pseudo pixel art' and 3D assets blend more seamlessly with 2D textures and pre-rendered assets.

Looks even better with a good CRT filter but even just the raw digital image is preferable to whatever they're doing in the NSO N64 library where everything 3D is rendered in 720p and it just looks blocky and visually dissonant with the 2D elements. I get some people want 'higher-res' 3D for these games but I just don't think it works.

Only if you're looking for horror. In my experience / observation, PS1-inspired horror games are the overwhelming majority use-case for this aesthetic.

😅

I own like half of these (Frogun, Ex-Zodiac, Lunistice) and a good amount aren't even out yet. So a handful of them compared to even just Puppet Combo and Chilla's art, Alisa and the recently highlighted Crow Country (which also isn't out, tbf) still doesn't really disprove my point. Ballistic looks dope though and I guess undetected is neat if you like MGS (which I place in the same bracket as RE mentally since the gameplay is so similar, haha).

There are a bunch of platformers and action games too, and a few JRPG's I believe. Also, Samurai Bringer reminds me of Brave Fencer. You just have to look for em.

Do you know of any of the JRPGs? That's the PS1 aesthetic I'm most interested in, as platformers don't do much for me. I also already own Samurai Bringer and am hoping Mecha Bringer fixes some of the issue I had with the first one.

Off the top of my head, Chained Echos or Sea of Stars.

Absolutely love some of the PS1 games still today. The recent Mouthwashing demo looks like a more detailed version of that and I loved it.

Those are sprite based jrpgs, which is not the aesthetic this invokes. Like, Terra Memoria looks like Breath of fire 3/4, but sprite based RPGs are not what I think of for PS1 RPGs, we're talking Chrono Cross / FF789 / Threads of fate / Legend of Legaia

Add to that Suikoden (combined 3D worlds with sprites, as we all know), Jade Cocoon, Grandia, Front Mission 3, Xenogears etc.
