When lockdown started me and some friends looked into the fan made HD version of this with the expansion after Ubi's actual HD version left us cold.
I never noticed this daddy status thing, but I did note the huge Russian community that surrounded this game.
They're the real heroes daddies of might and magic

For the HD Mod, if you use their online lobbies. If you're using HOTA you don't need to, and if you're using TCP/IP or Hamachi or some other mechanism to connect you don't, and if you're using the official Steam HD Rerelease (Without any expansions) you don't.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Heroes of Might & Magic III is the greatest game of all time. Thanks to years of hard work by fans, the "HD Mod" offers a huge number of QoL and feature enhancements that really elevate the game and make it very playable on modern computers.

One of the very useful features it has is adding online lobbies to really aide with ease of use in creating and joining multiplayer games. It has TCP/IP and local network stuff, but it's very finnicky.

As of May 2019, the ability to host online games on their servers is

Now, I know there's just one question on your mind -

Well that's easy of course - you just have to send $3 US to a man in Russia via paypal.

This seemed completely legit, so naturally I did this immediately.

Glad to know there are others here who acknowledge this universal truth. This is hilarious because I literately reinstalled HOMM3 last week and installed the HOTA mod for the first time, and messed around a bit in the online lobby and was asking myself—what is up with this "daddy" status thing?? Now I know!

Can anyone explain how these games became so popular in Russia/Eastern Europe? (The VCMI engine project is Polish, I think.) I really want to know—it's just so random. I've played HOMM3 since 2000 or so and I started noticing this post-Soviet hotbed trawling through forums in the mid-2000s.

By the way, the HOTA campaigns are very fun and pretty well written aside from the obviously Russian typos (dropped articles etc).

I don't really know why it's so big in Eastern Europe, but it definitely is. At peak hours sometimes HOMM3 has thousands of viewers on Twitch, mostly from Russia and former Soviet Satellites. I once stumbled across a (Russian? Or possible Polish) porn video where the premise was that the girl was playing HoMM3 while having sex, lmfao.

Alright, thanks for the detailed reply! I use HoTA, so that would be why then.

Is the Daddy status temporary, or a permanent one-time purchase thing? Apologies if you've already said, I didn't catch it.

It's a monthly thing. Can buy up to three months at a time.
Cool. Given the amount of time a game can take, that's not an unreasonable price even if you only get a couple in. Especially considering they're keeping the game alive far better than Ubisoft.

I'm surprised they went with "daddy" and not "hero", but it's certainly amusing!
