I really enjoyed both. I like that they nailed what they wanted to do with 2016 and then just had fun with Eternal.

Arc Complex is the greatest FPS level of all time.

But overall I enjoyed 2016's campaign a lot more. Eternal's felt like too much for me at times.

I was really prepared to love Doom Eternal - but just felt that it took some quite elegant systems and atomized them in to way too many sub-systems/plates to keep spinning.

2016's theming also felt like more of a coherent journey.

I love 2016 but Eternal is on a different level, sorry.

2016. It's simple, no nonsense "if it moves kill it" and has the better of the two soundtracks.

2016, if partly because I feel like the aesthetic consistency of it - versus Eternal being more 'honestly' gamified and using classic Doom elements - makes it easier for my brain to stay engaged, while Eternal is... constantly taking me out of itself

It's hard for me to back to 2016 after Eternal. It just feels so slow. Eternal also has maybe the best 3 level sequence in all shooters with Super Gore Nest, Arc Complex, and Mars Core.

Same answer it's always been, 2016 is drastically better written and delivers a better journey for that first run, but Eternal is much more fun to play and replay.

2016 was my favorite FPS game ever made. Nothing came even close. Eternal was 10x better.

It's Eternal for me. I swear that game had me in a trance of mayhem during particularly crazy combat segments. All the systems together just clicked in my head and hands.

But I also get loving 2016's more simple style.

One year ago 2016 no question, i hated Eternal changes at first and dropped it. But earlier this year i gave it another chance with the knowledge that Eternal is a different beast. And oh boy when it clicked its just incredible. So Eternal for me.

Sometimes less is more.
A lot of the reasons why people really love Eternal are things that make it feel less like Doom to me. I mostly want a prettier version of 1993 Doom, which 2016 isn't, but it's closer to it than Eternal is.

I think my perfect modern Doom would be a blend of Doom 3 and Doom 2016. It's like both are valid interpretations of exactly half of original Doom.

I like them both equally. I would give the original a slight edge just because it didn't have those silly Marauder enemies, but really they're both rollicking fun and I can't put one above the other.

Eternal was filled up with mechanics and the story/lore took itself way too seriously and was only a muddled, worse version of 2016 in the end.

Eternal's by a wide margin. The only thing I would like is a pure arcade campaign mode with all weapon unlocks from the start and no hub world. I felt those elements dragged the game down a little.

2016 had a more cohesive aesthetic, but feels flat out boring compared to Eternal's gameplay.

As I'll always say in these threads, Eternal took all the wrong lessons from Doom 2016 and made a different beast that I didn't like at all. Same thing that happened with Wolfenstein 2.

I liked Eternal well enough, but it just leaned into the worst parts of 2016's design. So many arenas where you had to kill waves of enemies to move on.

And the lore and story went beyond regular cringe into rarely seen and uncharted waters of cringe.

2016.
I thought Eternal was bloated, weirdly fixated on it's narrative after the extremely positive reception to 2016 specifically *not doing that*, has combat that's so demanding that it exhausted me considering the length of the levels, has out of place platforming sections, and Marauders.

It depends what kind of game I want to play.
If I want to play a fps I play DOOM 2016.
If I want a first person character action game I play DOOM Eternal.
The story is so bad in Eternal though. If I only cared about the story I'd play DOOM 2016.

i like eternal's combat better but prefer 2016's vibes. the story/lore stuff in eternal is just completely unnecessary

2016 ended when it should and left me wanting for more.
Eternal, I was exhausted and relieved when it ended.

I think Eternal has the better gameplay and combat arenas, but as a "campaign" the first one flows better. It has better pacing and level design.

There was an interview with Marty about how in Eternal they always wanted the player to be engaged even when they're not in combat. This led to them adding sections like those tentacle hallways, poison water that you can't jump in, underwater swimming sections, etc., all of which I thought were genuinely terrible. Same goes with the expanded lore, story, and cut-scenes. Just really bland stuff.

Any time I try to replay 2016, I get like 3 or 4 levels in and just quit out of sheer boredom. I still replay Eternal on a regular basis.

I prefer 2016's campaign, Eternal would win if I didn't need to go back to the fortress of memberberries to get upgrades and guns every time I finish a mission

I like pretty much everything better in Doom 2016. Doom Eternal was good but already while playing it I wished it was more like 2016.

DOOM 2016 is a really really good game
DOOM Eternal is a bad game that makes the original worse in every possible way.

Eternal feels like a somebody who really liked DOOM 2016 wanted to make a sequel but he had no idea what was good about it.

Doom 1, 2, and 2016 all have a VERY similar game design philosophy. 2016 was a proper modernization of the first 2. I fucking love it.

Eternal is so wildly different that 3 has more Doom DNA in it IMO.

I fucking hated Eternal.

to quote something I think of whenever I think of 2016 vs eternal...

Eternal is so weird since 2016 has such a sublime balance of putting AAA Game Narration at you and Doomguy being stupid and irreverent, and then they saw how people loved it and were like, ok, so you want more Lore and also what a late 90's youth pastor thinks is Awesome

Only played Doom 2016, but from what I've seen Eternal has the same issue:

I'm just not a fan of the locked door area style combat. I wish it were more like the original Doom where you could run right past enemies if you wanted and usually the whole level was open to you and there were only a couple instances where it locked you in a room with enemies.
