One Piece started slowing down when Oda started to take every other week off, oh well, Wano is also way too long and could have easily be cut in half with no much missing

Yay for another 1mill+ week for Tokyo Revengers!! I really doubt it will happen but if TR somehow manages to sell thru its printed issues then it would probably surpass JJK... Let's see how long it keeps selling 1 million per week (Though it would basically need to sell 1 million every week for like the next 17 or so weeks which IIRC is when Oricon year ends.. So yeah, not likely at all, but who knows).

MANUELF Shueisha has a campaign where volumes 1-90 are available for free, let's see if that brings new readers which is what One Piece really needs. It has a pretty loyal fanbase, almost 2 million people end up buying the volume after its first month, realistically you can't go higher than that (Unless you are Demon Slayer, but that's an exception rather than the rule).

One Piece taking a lot of breaks has certainly nothing to do with it selling less than it used to.
It's just a natural decline for a 100 volumes-long manga.
opfull.png

The decline started around 2016/volume 81/the Zou arc.

The regular breaks started around 2012/volume 67/Punk Hazard.

Some of that decline (not all) can even be attributed to the rise of digital sales.

Quick questions: where can you find the most recent numbers on the Oricon website?
The free Oricon website doesn't have as many numbers, and not as fast. Only the volume top 30 is available for free (in terms of weekly data). There's a weekly top 20 series ranking, but it doesn't have any number.
Then, there's the monthly and yearly stuff.

Every other Oricon numbers that I post are leaked from the paid Oricon service. It usually leaks on baidu. This service is accessible to all (unlike their business one, where a weekly top 500 exists) and cheap (~1k yen per month) so Oricon doesn't seem to be interested in stopping these leaks.

If for some reason, you're interested in paying that subscription, you can do so here.

Thanks. I'm assuming it's the same for Shoseki rankings?

Also, to compliment what Rouk' is saying about One Piece:

One Piece broke 1st printing record in Japan around volume 24-25 with like 2.4 million 1st print or something like that, that was back in 2004-2005. It slowed down (or stabilized) for a couple of years and then in 2009-2012 kept breaking record after record, so it was bound to eventually get lower sales, but even with its lower sales it pretty much is selling better than it ever did pre-time skip (In which it was already considered an immensely popular success). Even Oda said so himself in an interview like a year ago, that in the industry it is said that a fanbase usually sticks reading a manga for about 5 years, so One Piece still getting this kind of numbers is kind of a miracle.

Edit: So the Tokyo Revengers account just posted that Tokyo Revengers just accumulated 32'000,000 copies

Interesting that Kodansha keeps printing more and more volumes, maybe they expect this week not to be the only to sell 1M+. Things can get wild, hopefully, the JJK, KnY race is joined by TR.

Rouk' this might be a dumb question, but does the Oricon rank 52 weeks? If so there are 23 more weeks for Oricon chart, right? So it would end around late November, correct?

Tokyo Revengers doing numbers yet again! (In fact, this week got better results than the previous one!).
Kodansha recently announced 32 million for TR was in circulation (with digital sales included) so let's see how sales for TR keep going, but if TR manages to get the next 23 weeks in a 750K+ average then it would be a contender for #1! (I know I keep saying this every week, but I really like Tokyo Revengers haha).

Although to my knowledge, we don't know when the next volume of JJK is gonna get released, do we? Especially now that the author got some well deserved vacations?

The yearly rankings can be either 52 or 53 weeks depending on the calendar. 2020 was 53 weeks. 2021 will be 52. The last week of the year will be week 46 (ending on November 21st).
The week numbers I use are related to the actual calendar, not to Oricon's calendar. So week 1 is not the first week of the "Oricon year", but the first week of the calendar year. Oricon years go from week 47 to week 46 most of the time (exceptions being 53 weeks long years).

Meaning there are 17 weeks left before the Oricon cut-off point for 2021.

Tokyo Revengers would need to do something like 1.1m-1.2m average every week to have a chance at beating JJK (if we assume JJK's next volume does come out in October, as was planned before the break)

I fully expect Blue box and Dandadan to be in this top 10 next week.
Also Frieren doing better than I thought. Wonder how long until it gets an anime announced.

  1. Tokyo Revengers
  2. My Hero Academia
  3. Jujutsu Kaisen
  4. Dragon Ball Super
  5. Demon Slayer
  6. Mashle
  7. Kingdom
  8. Honey Lemon Soda
These 8 should do 80k+.
Elusive Samurai will also be in (even its vol 2 sells as much as DDD, it has its first volume that will push it above).
That only leaves one spot. It could go to DDD, but it's going to be hard, as stuff like Haikyu!!, Attack on Titan or Chainsaw Man are likely to do better.
If they get into the top 20, it'll be a great result. And I'm not confident at all that Blue Box will do so. DDD is slightly more likely.

Welp... TR is already "slowing down" (As it, it reached its peak of weekly sales already) so yeah, not likely it will be able to truly compete for 1st place.

A random thought I had, do we know when Demon Slayer season 2 starts? Because if it starts in the next season, maybe that would boost it sales enough to beat JJK in yearly sales?

Chainsaw Man, top 5 WITHOUT an anime, and one spot above One Piece.

Pure insanity. Granted, I'm not expecting CSM to stay top 5 by year's end. Still awesome though.

Based on this, end of the year oricon ranking should end up being the same with the exception of Chainsaw Man going from 5th to 10th and One piece ending at 4th
Meanwhile WSJ top ten (excluding Jump+) will probably be something like this
01. Jujutsu Kaisen
02. Demon Slayer
03. One Piece
04. My Hero Academia
05. Chainsaw Man
06. Dr. Stone
07. Haikyu!!
08. The Promised Neverland
09. Mashle
10. Black Clover

How long has it been since One Piece was at number 3 in jump and outside of top 3 yearly rankings?

Anyway, glad to see Frieren and RoR doing so well. Both some of my favourite rignt now.

One Piece is very unlikely to be 4th. I don't see it beating Attack on Titan. 5th is more likely. And even then, since MHA has 2 volumes left before the end of the year, it could outsell OP.
And Chainsaw Man isn't going to drop to 10th place. 9th at worst. 10th place will go to either Haikyu or Kaiju (leaning towards Haikyu). Dr. Stone is not beating Haikyu, and I don't see it beat TPN either.

Uuh... 1997?

Probably 1999

How does One Piece go from consistently being #1 year after year to now not even being top 3?

Is the series becoming less popular or is it just that other series are becoming more popular? Or both?

Both, but mainly other series exploding in popularity.
One Piece physical sales have been slowly declining for years now (both for new volumes and for backlog sales (old volumes)), so it was bound to be overtaken at some point. It just happened that 3 huge boosts happened very closely.

It's a 100 volume long manga. The fact that it kept a readership this big after all this time is a testament to how big the manga truly is.

Wow that would a huge drop for One Piece. Wonder how it will go next year. it's definitely not going to be in top 3 with Chainsaw Man anime coming out and Demon slayer and Jujutsu kaisen recieving a new season and movie respectively late this year. Could we see it end up outside the top 5 for the first time?
And if chainsaw man still ends up at 9th even without the anime, I can only imagine how well it will do when the anime releases. Can it do better than JJk this year?

  • Demon Slayer might not sell that much next year. It kinda seems like it has hit a ceiling. We'll see, but I wouldn't be too sure that it'll beat OP
  • Jujutsu Kaisen is the current favorite for #1. Its new volumes will sell like 2m units.
  • Chainsaw Man has a lot of potentiel, but the question is how much of that potential has yet to be "used". Manga that already sold a lot before their anime have not always had a huge boost (see Assassination Classroom, The Promised Neverland). It could go both ways. Another important factor will be the Part 2 release date and whether or not Oricon will count the new volumes as a separate series or not.
  • So for now, I would say that OP will still be in the top 5, as I expect both Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer to leave it next year. All that's left is the unpredictable boosts of anime that might not even be announced (Blue Lock, Spy x Family, Mashle, Frieren, Jigokuraku, A Couple of Cuckoos, My Dress-up Darling, Orient, etc)

Also about One Piece sales for this year, it's worth noting that One Piece is again on track to only have 3 new volumes this year instead of the usual 4. So that's going to play some role in its lower than usual sales, but not enough to put it above the massive surges of some other series. Could have put it above Attack on Titan though

How are those numbers for Chainsaw man, good?
Also weird that it's only volume 1 since apparently every volume is hard to find. Low stocks?

Incredible numbers. Best monthly total for a single manga volume ever I believe (Slightly above MHA #28 in June, though that one had 5 weeks vs 4 here for Chainsaw).

And it's only volume 1 cause they don't reprint full series, just a single volume. If you check the previous months, you'll see that there's often been one older Chainsaw volume in the top (volume 1, 2 or 3), but never two.
And despite this huge result, volume 1 was still hard to find for a lot of people. They just can't keep up with the demand.
Things should stabilise next year.

Huh, wonder why.

Won't the anime make it even harder to find?

Thank you.

I didn't realize that Dragon Ball Super already has the same volumes than OG Dragon Ball.

That Tokyo Revengers rebound gives me hopes for it to be #1 of the year! I saw on twitter that it got a reprint yet again, so maybe this rebound from previous weeks (Which is basically the same as its highest week ever, being 20k apart).

Whatever happens, is gonna be an interesting last couple of weeks for this Oricon year unless TR slows down significantly.
Also if KnY's 2nd season premieres on October/November that might give its volumes the boost needed to overtake the other series too...
