One of my favorite bands, they disbanded two weeks ago, on February 22 (2/22). Had no other choice but to go to their last show in a packed O-East and it was awesome. Both bittersweet and fun as hell, had a great time.
I also happen to know someone from their staff so I got a guest pass while I was waiting to enter the venue 😆 Definitely holding on to it.

I just saw Shonen Knife in Auckland NZ. They're so sweet, but still tight and rockin' in their 60's (two of them anyway. I assume the drummer is a fair bit younger.)

Saw Otoboke Beaver last night. The guitarist's never ending energy reminded me of the time I saw the Chili Peppers and Anthony was a little sick so Flea had to take over being extra hyper on stage and also being the main hype man between songs. I never watched OB live before so I wasn't aware of the band dynamics. Typically when you have someone strictly doing vocals, they also double as the de facto spokesman during the live shows. Not so here. The guitarist was very much sharing what you would call "frontman charisma" duties.

Anyways, super fun. Totally check em out if they are in your town next. The opener (from South Korea) Drinking Boys and Girls Choir is awesome too. I first learned about them a few years ago when they did a cover of The Blue Hearts song Linda Linda. At the time I was inspired to seek some of that music out because of the 2004 film Linda Linda Linda (which is one of the best in all of the 00s decade for me).

And finally. The last CHAI concert is today. In about 9 hours from this post. Here is the link to that official live stream. Gonna miss the neo kawaii girls

Nice. Yeah honestly their age really doesn't show as far as stage presence (going off of when I saw them a bit before the pandemic). You can tell they are still very into it. Joyful show. Plus such a historic band at this point too. It felt like I was seeing a key band in the cannon of Japanese rock, and the whole Nirvana connection back in the early 90s is a bit important to me too (they looked so different back then haha). Nice to hear they still give the same impression I got from them not too long ago.

Managed to get tickets to the Ogre You Asshole and Kaneko Ayano show in Osaka at the end of June, so my wife and I are flying in from Boston for it. I'm thrilled — these were the two groups/artists that I tried to find at each record shop we went to during our first trip over last November. If anyone has any tips/etiquette for concerts in Japan, I'm all ears.

The vast majority of concerts in Japan don't allow pictures/videos so avoid whipping out your phone during the show (unless it's explicitly allowed). The only people I saw doing that in Japan were foreigners and they always got the side eye.
Also don't forget you'll have to pay an extra 500/600 yens at the door for the drink.
Aside from that just enjoy!

Definitely think there's a market in Japan for longer sets like Tiny Desks, so hopefully this takes off. It being on the main channel helps reaching an audience that isn't familiar with Japanese music too! Would love to see Yonezu Kenshi, King Gnu or Vaundy there.

I bought tickets to ringo fes on a whim in Feb. Hoping Yonige and Zombie Chang return for the 3rd year in a row lol.

Like Kurita said don't expect to be able to film/take photos during the set.
But if you see everyone else doing it or the artist explicitly says before a song to upload this to tiktok or something ... I think you're good lol.

Not expecting that for an Ogre You Asshole x Kaneko Ayano concert tho. I only experienced this at rap or idol concerts.

I'm completelly utterly destroyed by today news of Reita :(
the gazette is such an important part of my life and how it keeps going with me it really hurts, i've never felt that i could feel this way about a band member
i was lucky to have gone on their 3 live concerts that happened arround here. Now i wish i went to one of the meet and greet. I'll forever miss Reita :(

He's mostly known as a comedian (one half of the massively popular manzai duo Shimofurimyojo), but he's also an accomplished musician.
