As per title, there's currently a kickstarter to restore Abbott and Costello's Jack and the Beanstalk for DVD/Blu-Ray release:

www.kickstarter.com

Help Restore Abbott and Costello's JACK AND THE BEANSTALK!

We need your help to fully restore this beloved comedy classic for release on region free Blu-ray and DVD.

This film is in the public domain, so it's very unlikely to ever get a decent restoration in any other way (indeed you can see here for a recent low-effort attempt which was very unsatisfactory). The chap behind the kickstarter has already successfully restored many films, most through larger companies such as Kino Lorber, but has also done another public domain Abbott/Costello flick through kickstarter which was well received in terms of video quality, so the risk is fairly low.

The initial goal has already been met, and it currently has a stretch goal to include 15 trailers from the Universal Abbott & Costello films (which were bafflingly absent from the massive Universal A&C bluray boxset) if they reach $21,327.

Planned bonus features are pretty packed already, with:
  • Commentary track by noted Abbott and Costello expert Ron Palumbo.
  • Restored Sepia-toned opening and closing scenes.
  • Original 1952 SuperCinecolor 35mm trailer.
  • Behind the scenes on-set production photos.
  • A look at the complex Cinecolor process by film historian Jack Theakston.
  • Deleted scenes photo gallery.
  • Jack and the Beanstalk radio sketch from 1945 with Rudy Vallee.
  • Kodachrome wardrobe test slides with Lou, Buddy Baer and Dorothy Ford.
  • Posters, pressbook and lobbycards photo gallery.
  • 1952 World Premiere photos at the Fabian Theatre in Paterson, NJ.
  • Restored color trailer for Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd.
As well as two more from the first two stretch goals which have already been met:
  • Restoration of last surviving pieces of the 35mm picture negative (no track), containing one brief deleted sequence
  • Mastered 7 minute 1952 Jack and the Beanstalk children's recording from an original 15 ips analogue tape.

Quick update, they blasted through all their stretch goals so far, including the last which was to add trailers for the universal-era films to the set:

ONE NIGHT IN THE TROPICS - 1940 release with text overlays.
KEEP 'EM FLYING - the rarest A&C Universal trailer, unseen since the 1940's.
PARDON MY SARONG
IT AIN'T HAY
THE NAUGHTY NINETIES
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN - incredibly rare 1948 release.
MEXICAN HAYRIDE
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE KILLER, BORIS KARLOFF - 1949 release.
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN THE FOREIGN LEGION
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE INVISIBLE MAN - with text overlays.
COMIN' ROUND THE MOUNTAIN
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO TO MARS
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE KEYSTONE KOPS - widescreen.
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY - widescreen.
FIREMAN, SAVE MY CHILD. (Bud and Lou nearly made this feature in 3-D in 1953 but Lou was stricken with rheumatic fever so it went to Hugh O'Brian and Buddy Hackett)

These trailers aren't on the big universal Abbott/Costello boxset for some reason, so cool to have them here.

Update 16: Exciting News! · Help Restore Abbott and Costello's JACK AND THE BEANSTALK!

It's not often that you restore a 70 year old movie and have input from anyone that actually worked on the production. I am VERY pleased to announce that actor David Stollery is on board! David was named Child Actor of the Year at the age of seven for his role in the Broadway production On...

The child actor who Lou babysits will do a commentary for his segments of the film! He is now 79 years old.

Not much interest here so this'll be the last time I bump this, but just in case anyone was following, they've put up the final stretch goal:

Update 18: Final Stretch Goal · Help Restore Abbott and Costello's JACK AND THE BEANSTALK!

For those who have our AFRICA SCREAMS restoration from ClassicFlix, you've seen our work with restoring Bud and Lou's classic Rubdown sketch from live television. We were able to take a flat, murky 16mm kinescope and replicate how it originally appeared on live television in 1953. I am now...

basically they want to do a 4K scan of 16mm kinescope footage of an Abbott & Costello sketch which introduced "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" (Abbott & Costello did many crossovers with the Universal monsters. A cinematic universe if you will lol!) and restore it to put on the BD.

They're already a lot of the way there, less then $400 before the reach the final stretch goal.
