Korea will focus on fostering its console game sector over the next five years as part of efforts revive the country's game industry, the culture ministry said Wednesday.

Under the five-year plan to promote the game industry, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will work to expand the country's share in the global console game market by 2028, aiming to reduce its heavy dependence on online and mobile game platforms.

Korea has the fourth-biggest game industry in the world in terms of sales, posting a combined revenue of 22.2 trillion won ($16.04 billion) in 2022, driven by the growth of online and mobile games.

However, the country's share of the global console game market is only 1.5 percent, which constitutes 28 percent of the entire industry, with mobile games accounting for 44 percent, according to the ministry. Also, more than 40 percent of gamers in North America and Europe play console games, the ministry added.

The government said it will help local companies cooperate with major global console game companies, like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, to develop blockbuster titles. It also plans to provide support to independent game companies for the development of a wider range of video games. (Yonhap)

With things like Crimson Desert and The First Berserker, I'm not super surprised to see this, and it's quite exciting to hear. Was nice seeing these devs that typically work on online gacha games(of pretty high quality admittedly) start focusing their efforts on single player or console experiences. Excited to see what comes out of this(unless it's like stellar blade. Less that, more Crimson Desert please).

They definitely have some talented studios in the country. More partnerships with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo seems a good way to go. Been impressed with Stellar Blade and Lies of P over the last few months.

Every country should be doing this. Good for Korea.

5 years? GTA6 has been in development for 10 years haha.
They'll renew it after five years based on an analysis of how successful this initiative was and the future outlook at the time.

Five year plans are VERY common for govt initiatives in many countries. Korea unveiled a 5-year anti-corruption plan in 2018, also in 2018 a 5-year obesity management plan as a reaction to the popularity of mukbangs, last month they revealed a 5-year plan to boost international students in Korean universities. In the 60s to 80s, Korea's development from a poor country to a rich, industrialized economy happened as a result of successive 5-year economic development plans which sought to turn the country into an export-oriented economy, which also birthed the chaebols like Samsung, LG and Hyundai. Popularly known as Miracle on the Han River that happened over the course of two decades. This very Ministry has unveiled and carried out many five year plans to support the overseas expansion of Korean drama, film and music industries from 1990s to this decade.

Five year plans are also very common in other developing countries in Asia, like China, India etc.

Stellar Blade is awesome. The combat is so much fun. Feels like the second or third iteration from someone having done this before. Not sure what the combat designer has done before.

As long as this means more stuff like Lies of P and less shitty, misogynistic GamerGate trash like Stellar Blade, cool.

Looking forward to seeing what they produce

It's nice to see more AAA players entering the console space, as opposed to more online and mobile etc

Brill thanks, very informative and seems like a good initiative to get the ball rolling.

Haven't played stelar blade yet, but Lies of P was fantastic.

Hopefully those successes means they will continue to make solid single player games.

It's definitely good for Korea, but it's worth noting that they're probably not doing this for the reasons you think.

Genshin and Honkai Star Rail basically shuffled the mobile market so much that a lot of revenue that formerly went into Korean gaming companies are now going towards China instead. That coupled with MMOs basically dying if you're not WoW and FFXIV nowadays has basically resulted in the Korean gaming industry being at risk of becoming globally irrelevant.

Realistically, they're finally diversifying due to market conditions, not for any moral reasons.

I don't think anyone would believe business would change for any other reasons than business

Still it's good to see a potentially positive change rather than a negative one

South Korea is already developing a TON of SP stuff, both big and small, but it's cool to see even the government helping in creating a bigger console/pc scenario (outside of mobile/F2P stuff)

There's definitely a ton of quality developer talent in Korea that has mostly gone toward mobile and F2P games with exploitative monetization schemes. I would like to see more traditional games from them, so this is exciting.

This is great news if it involves any dev studios that isn't ragingly misogynistic. I wish Spain did the same, we have so much untapped potential here.

Stellar Blade 2 please.

Yes, but make Adam the main character.

With exactly the same skimpy outfits.

And crotch and ass bubble physics.

EDIT: Oh wow a backshot of a shirtless male character with normal pants on. THAT'S COMPLETELY THE SAME.

Great to hear this! Now give us Crimson Desert please. I'm scared the game is dead since it seemingly disappeared :(

Nice, hopefully Stellar Blade will give them the necessary confidence to not only work on a sequel but more console games in general.

Lies of P and Stellar Blade showed how much quality they have.
Especially for their first attempts at AAA Games.

And Stellar Blade running better and being better optimized while looking much better than some of the games from the "big dogs" shows how talented they are.

Have my share of issues with Lies of P but if they do a sequel with you-know-what would def play it. Have even more issues with Stellar Blade but it also seems like a technically impressive game.

But tbh I really want Crimson Desert. It looks like every game at once and maybe like it doesn't exist but damn.

The Pearl Abyss thing is probably why they didn't confirm the consoles for Crimson Desert yet

Agreed good chance SIE comes in and pulls a similar move as Stellar Blade in takes over publishing at least the console version. I also think SIE will secure exclusivity with Project M as part of their recent NcSoft deal. Heck Project M is in a similar situation in it says coming to console but doesn't list PS5 yet uses PlayStation button layout in the gameplay videos.

It does seem obvious from their reveal trailer lol

This is smart, South Korea has been developing into an entertainment powerhouse with the rise of things like K-pop, Korean cinema and TV and now Korean games, you love to see it.
