And that's on store which piracy is not stopped, it's probably mind blowing how much Apple made on app store.Ya know what's funny though. Google generates more revenue through the google play store (through the 30% cut they take from IAP) than Nintendo generates through games software.
I'll believe it when I see it. Just like Amazon was supposedly going to be a big player and pretty much hasn't done anything
They released some F2P game in 2014, then had Breakaway cancelled. This is what I would worry about if Google started nabbing studios :/Hmm.. i'm not sold on this. Most other big companies i'd be a bit more open to, but Google has a habit of starting up new projects then abandoning them. I'm not sure i'd trust them enough to invest long-term into gaming.
It's going to really suck if Amazon bought Double Helix just to trap them in development limbo.
This is a good damn post. I would add that I think that Google and Apple have the finances and assets to get into the gaming industry. I think they can hand out some cheques to gaming "talent" without even thinking about it.Google has the resources to create such things.
My guess is anything they do will be based in Android, they'd have the UI infrastructure in place which links to your Google Profile across all their services. Having big youtube implementation to help promote the service with large creators.
They'd also probably leverage mobile dominance to entice big third party developers to their platform, assuming this is a streaming subscription service.
But this also raises lots of questions,
For Example, Controls, Google needs their own dedicated controller, but what would they do for phones? Will they have devs try implementing touch controls in AAA games or have a controller like attachments?
Then the original content and talent. Google will convince many big publishers to port their multi-plat games over. But will that be enough? Maybe, if the service is steps above the competition in usability. But assuming all services are on equal footing.
It will be the original content that sets these apart. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have a huge advantage here. Not only having big established franchises but also big talented studios all working under them.
This infrastructure didn't come cheap, and took many, many, many years building up trust and relationships with talented devs.
Google, Amazon, Apple will have to really open up their checkbooks here. They can all afford studios but it's the "talent", those senior level developers that are scarce and don't come cheap, and a lot of times value creative freedom. And most of that talent is already under established big umbrellas.
It's be interested to see how newcomers to this space address this issue. Will the board of these companies approve such a huge investment into an unproven endeavor?
Whatever the case, it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
No fucking way!
3-5 years.... more like 2-3 :P. No doubt there could be a huge initial push and then as you say, it would completely fizzle out once Google gets bored. Now, I can see them trying to make Android TV/Google Home/whatever a better platform for games already in the Play Store.I eagerly anticipate the unveiling, the massive slew of thinkpieces about how Google is going to dominate this market and everybody else better buckle up, the thing releases to tepid actual reviews and even more lukewarm sales, and Google quietly abandoning it in 3-5 years.
And that's where any potential passion goes down the drain.
People blowing this off should be absolutely terrified at the prospect of a company with Google money getting into the studio acquisition business.
umm... like Microsoft?People blowing this off should be absolutely terrified at the prospect of a company with Google money getting into the studio acquisition business.
I don't think people here understood the weight of a Google assault on the game industry.

???I'm in favor of anyone replacing Microsoft at this point. It can't get much worse than XB1 for me so I say go for it Google. If anyone is getting knocked out of the market, it will be the newcomer or MS.
How is people still managing to troll the Xbox on a thread about Google? SmhI'm in favor of anyone replacing Microsoft at this point. It can't get much worse than XB1 for me so I say go for it Google. If anyone is getting knocked out of the market, it will be the newcomer or MS.
Microsoft Games division does not receive carte blanche or blank checks from Microsoft proper, so no, it is not at all the same.
Google recently updated the YouTube App on AppleTV to be nothing more than a website. It does not follow any UI conventions known to man, especially the ones set out by TVOS. I have no confidence in Googles ability beyond their back end processes.
Having not been checking message boards in the time Microsoft was coming into the fold, were people this pessimistic about them stepping into the console space at that time?
I don't see any reason Google can't eventually do what Microsoft has done. It'll be tough sledding, of course, but I guess time will tell.

I think quality exclusives would be enough to entice some people to at least give a Google console a shot.
