Latest No Man’s Sky update adds ship customisation, new Guild system, space station overhaul, and more

Orbital update drops today, also bringing with it engine improvements and UI refresh.
Hello, only last month we welcomed a huge number of new PlayStation Travellers to the No Man's Sky universe with our free Omega expedition, which brought a ton of new content. It's incredible to watch new folks getting to experience eight years of updates since launch.

Today March 27, we are releasing our 27th major update – Orbital – and this is a big one!

The Orbital update brings a complete overhaul to Space Stations. Until now these have been perhaps the only part of No Man's Sky that wasn't procedurally generated. Engine improvements have allowed us to create vast interior spaces and exterior spaces, with improved reflection and metallic surfaces.

Outside, Space Station exteriors are at a scale never seen before and are hugely varied.

Inside, Stations have been transformed, and are now vast, procedurally generated, and incredibly diverse. Featuring new shops, gameplay and activities, Stations are now uniquely customised based on system, race and locale.

Stations also contain perhaps our most requested feature of all time! A ship editor allows players to customise their ships and players can even create never-before-seen starship types.

We haven't introduced customisation previously, because so many players love exploring to find the perfect ship already out there to purchase. In keeping with exploration, to customize their ship, travelers gather and trade parts for their ships as they explore, salvaging the best components from wrecks and ruins

We are also introducing a new Guild system, making joining Guilds and increasing reputation a much larger part of the game. Visit new Guild envoys on Space Stations to gain supplies and rare items, or make donations to increase your standing.

You can own a freighter and even build up a fleet of frigates in No Man's Sky. Now you can send that frigate fleet on away missions where if they get into trouble, as frigate captain, you can perform daring rescues. Players can scramble your squadron of fighters, and warp to battles and engage your attackers.

The Orbital update adds ship customisation, transforms Space Stations inside and out, a new guild system, engine improvements, UI refresh and much more. It's a huge update with several major features that have been on player's wishlists for a long time. We have a lot more planned this year as our journey continues.

This one is really good. Space Stations have way more variations now. They aren't almost completely identical now.

This is beyond incredible. If I could ever compete with the output of this studio and the dedication to their craft, I could die a happy man.

About fucking time. I understand their reasoning, but I think they made a great compromise on how you get parts to customize. Nothings lamer than having no control over the look of your personal ship in a game where you fly around constantly for dozens of hours.

I keep reading about these crazy updates and I'll redownload the game and start up a new file and get to the point where they make me build a base before I get overwhelmed. I'll never see any if this, lol.

Really cool to see customization finally arriving and being implemented well in the gameplay loop and exploration!

You don't have to engage with base building. I just made a cube and skipped the rest of it.

Some day I'm going to jump back in, but I think I will wait until they announce they're done making content updates

One of these days though, they need to add some actual challenging content. It was pretty deflating when I finished up all the main missions and realized that all the upgrades I had worked to get were pretty much pointless without any escalating threats or challenges to use them for.

The red/blue/green star systems seem like the place to ramp up the danger, but I don't think they do

Holy shit. I just finished reading through the update notes and MAN. Ship Customization is something I wanted forever but I really ended up coming to like the ships I had in the colorways I found them.

The only things i need to see now are Living Ship color customization (if possible) and how the Pirate space stations look.

Do we know how big Hello Games is?
At one time, they only had like 20-20 employees I believe.

What is the gameplay loop

- Mine/acquire resources
- upgrade suit/jetpack/Multi-Tool/Ship/Freighter
- continue mining/acquiring resources to complete quests
- explore
A lot of NMS is doing what you want to do with no real "goal" sometimes. Just working at little pieces over time. Basically, make your own goals.

less than 50 I think
What is the gameplay loop
You get resources to supply yourself as you go from planet to planet investigating stuff while making your way to the center of the galaxy. There are other mission paths and quests that can involve you becoming mayor of your own settlement, creating a fleet, doing missions with friends, fighting robots, etc

The gameplay can feel samey after 50 or so hours, but what doesn't? It's great especially with a friend.

I hope the next update deals with the tutorial. I think that's all th game really needs now. Space out the tutorials.

Customizable Starship sells this update alone as now you're hunting for parts not just hoping the procgen gives you a ship you like the look of.

Though I'm going to kinda miss the prior station interior type looking like an airport waiting lounge complete with food court and sketchy dealer.
