DeepL translation:

I am currently working on a new film, "Suzume no Dojimari". It's a road movie about Suzume, the main character, who travels around the archipelago trying to close the doors of misfortune. It's a road movie where the main character Suzume travels to close the doors, a modern adventure story, and an action movie where she fights with an entity. It should be a fun movie, so please look forward to it in the fall of 2022!

Suzume no Dojimari seems to translate to something along the lines of: "Suzume's Door Shutting/Lock".

Shinkai: It's about a character closing doors or something
Me: Say no more, absolutely on board, day 1.

Can't wait. He and his studio are beyond talented. Some of the most beautiful films ever crafted.

I think his best work is still 5 Centimeters Per Second, but I'm always in for the art. And this one sounds like it might be a refreshing deviation from the themes he typically explores in his work.

Completely forgot he was announcing something today.

As long as it's not something similar to your name or withering with you, I'm looking forward to it.

Despite being quite enamoured with "Your Name" after I watched it for the first time, I agree with you. Also, some of the problems I had with both "Your Name" as well as "Weathering With You" (much more so for the latter one) stemmed from too much "magic", so I'm not quite sold on the idea that that is apparently back again; 5 Centimeters Per Second worked wonderfully while being completely grounded in reality. But it does sound nice indeed that he's trying different themes this time.

Shamefuly reposting what i did in the first announcement thread :

Personally i lost all hype after the last two movies, aside from the visuals which are always gorgeous, they didn't impact me at all... Your name was just okay, still a good time, but weathering with you was the worst imo! We're really far from something like 5cm per second and garden of words

would be cool if i'm wrong for that new movie though

扉の向こうには、すべての時間があった―『君の名は。』『天気の子』の新海誠監督 集大成にして最高傑作『すずめの戸締まり』2023年9月20日(水)Blu-ray&DVD発売!

Suzume no Dojimari" is a road movie about the liberation and growth of Suzume, a young girl who closes "doors" that cause misfortune, in abandoned places around Japan.

Never-before-seen landscapes. Encounters and partings with people. Surprises and difficulties abound. Even so, Suzume's story of moving forward brings a ray of light to the journey of those of us who live our daily lives next to anxiety and inconvenience.

This is the story of a "doorstop" that connects the past, present, and future. The view will be engraved in our hearts forever.

DeepL said:
Suzume, a seventeen-year-old girl living in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young traveler who says, "I'm looking for a door." Suzume follows him to a ruin in the mountains, where she finds an old door standing alone, as if it were the only place left behind from the collapse. As if drawn by something, Suzume reaches for the door, but...

Soon, doors begin to open one after another all over Japan. It is said that the doors that open must be closed, for bad luck will come from the other side.

--The stars, the setting sun, and the morning sky. In the place I wandered into, there was a sky where all time seemed to have melted together.

Guided by a mysterious door, Suzume's "journey of shutting the door" begins.

Glad to hear it sounds like it is outside his usual wheelhouse! I really like most of his films but after Weathering With You was such a regression from Your Name (imo) I was sort of worried he was going to wind up stuck in a rut on "boy meets girl" romances with a supernatural twist.

An adventure film with a female MC sounds like a good change of pace.

Does the ending once again involve parting from the person they love and then maybe never seeing them again? Given the meeting a young traveller angle, I'm gonna put money on yes.

YES

Your Name was a masterpiece. Weathering with You was just ok though. Anyway I'm always here for the art and music.

Weathering With You was ultimately disappointing, but I love most of his other movies so I'm definitely excited. Anime movies of this scope are rare these days anyways.

Please be better than the last two movies. I feel that ever since Shinkai got a budget his storytelling quality dropped in favour of visuals and animation.

In for how beautiful it will be. But I'm guessing it'll be another elaborate contraption full of dull, hollow sentiments.

As long as it's the just ending, I won't complain.

I just don't want another movie where they get separated in the first act, then the rest of the movie is them longing for each other.

I've been a HUGE FAN since his debut work of Hoshi no Koen -- hard to believe it'll be 20 years since it came out next year.

Ugh, another reason to feel old....

I could watch 5 Centimeters daily (actually, I'm pretty sure I did at some point) and not grow bored of it. It's such a rich movie, both audiovisually as in the story. Universal in a way that's very difficult to achieve with these magic-infused stories of his lately.

I love all of his movies.

They got better and better imo, and moreso now that he's done going for bitter ending everytime lol

Can't wait for this one, seems like it's going to be more fantasy setting huh. I do prefer his more grounded in reality films, but we'll see I guess

Loved Your Name but loathed Weathing With You, seems he's doing something more akin to Children Who Chased Lost Voices which isn't exactly confidence inspiring, definitely need to see more before I can get excited about this.

Weathering with You was an immense let down and might just be my least favorite movie of his (his worst written work, as far as I'm concerned). Respectively, I don't have high hopes for this.

I seriously never minded his very specific romance catalogue but when the execution and character writing hardly get better over the works then yeah...

In for more scenery porn and (prob) a nice soundtrack.
Plot-wise...I guess we'll see. He's usually a miss with the big concept fantasy adventure stuff like Children Who Chase Lost Voices or Weathering with You so this synopsis doesn't inspire much confidence. I'd much prefer his down-to-earth films like 5cm/s or Garden of Words but I guess he's graduated to big-budget affairs now.

Hell yeah! Probably gonna come out overseas by 2023, but I'll be there.

I've seen Weathering With You a total of 5 times on theaters (something I've never done before since I never rewatch movies in theaters barring a few exceptions), and probably seen Your Name for 3-4 times over the years. Something about these movies makes them very pleasing and entertaining watches. I hope this one will be the same for me. Ah dammit I need to watch 5cm and Garden of Words again.

I remember reading that they started work on the script for this during the start of COVID lockdowns, I wonder how it'll affect the story/themes of the film.

The Context To Modern Makoto Shinkai: Contrasting Your Name, Weathering With You, And The Upcoming Suzume no Tojimari

Makoto Shinkai’s modern work is defined by its immediate circumstances to a larger degree than most people realize, be it the themes he decides to tackle or the finesse in the delivery that d…

While talking about this movie before its reveal was publicly teased, I summarized the state of its production with this dichotomy: either they allowed Shinkai to delay the early summer deadline that the previous movies had, or they'd have no movie to show—fortunately, they opted for the former. Although it's too early to worry about the finished product, Suzume's milestones have been notoriously behind Weathering with You's already messy situation, as the pre-production has been anything but smooth. The storyboarding process lasted well over a year, from October 2020 to right now, as Shinkai spent ages trying to correct his own work. The animation process began in Spring as it usually happens with his movies, but you can't really make progress when the director has yet to nail his final vision for the film. Here's hoping that the schedule extension they've been granted is enough in the end.

Wasn't the biggest fan of Weathering With You (I thought it was better on a second watch) but I'm looking forward to this. I wonder if RADWIMP will be doing the soundtrack again.

Btw I think that second word should be "Tojimari" instead of "Dojimari".
