I had to take a small break from gaming shortly after I bought the game but now that things have gotten back to normal IRL I can actually dig into this.

I think I've finally settled on my two favorite weapons being lance and hammer (I dig Heavy bow gun also but not too sure about juggling ammo types). I think I lean more into lance because the lance charge mechanic is too much fun. I've been having a bit of a tough time knowing exactly when to use the regular guard counter vs the power guard , and I'm still figuring out a lot of the base systems since there is a lot of information there but I really love the game.

I also have had to adjust to playing solo most of the time since flares only seem to work sometimes, and I don't personally know very many people who picked up the game. In other hunting games like God Eater and Toukiden it's not so bad since they give you AI controlled party members to help you out in a pinch but here it's all you unless you can find a group.

If anyone would like to add me my PSN ID is ReaperXL7. Still learning but I play consistently most evenings.

I really like fighting Teostra. At least in 1p with hunting horn, he is the most enjoyable elder to fight. I can stick to him pretty easily and I find him the most straightforward of the elders and the fastest to beat. I like that I spend the time fighting him, and spend less of the hunt dealing with gimmicks that knock me away. The others are slower, more dangerous, or keep-away kushala and they take me a long time...

Make sure to pick up dragon pods when you can as that helps quite a bit with the aura stuff.

I haven't fought any tempered elders yet so I'll probably get my ass kicked then.

I can kill him consistently now, but he's still the one I like to fight the least. I like Vaal Hazak cuz he's such a pushover, lol.

What is elderseal for? Been noticing that affinity for Rarity 8 weapon
Its like a status that disrupts an elder dragon's abilities. Teostra's flame aura, Kushala's wind barrier, Kirin's body armor, Vaal's effluvia aura, nerg's spike regrowth.

It doesn't always trigger when you need it though and when the monster is enraged they sometimes reapply it straight away, especially vaal.

I beat the story! Now the real game begins. Xeno was a fun albeit easy fight. His attacks were all heavily telegraphed so dodging wasn't any trouble. I'm really liking my Karma build, though I want to try doing a Spread build as well.

I shot from HR 15 straight to 29, did the double Bazel quest and went straight to 42. All that time spent grinding wasn't so useless after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whats the best Gunlance? I've been in the process of switching to it from hunting horn for non elder dragons last night. At the moment I got the Blue Chariot, Nergy's, and Dora's made. Made the two that look cool to me and now want to make the most useful haha.

I think it sort of depends on play style, the long shot types are more stronger with charged shots. Wide shots do the most damage per shot especially on larger monsters. Normal has the most ammo shells so if you focus is on using the burst shot then this is usually the one to go for.

While not the strongest gl, I enjoy using the paralysis and poisons I made.

Rathian for Full Burst playstyle because it have level 4 Normal Shelling. Zorah for Charged Shot spam because it have level 4 Long Shelling.

I've used mostly Lightning and Rathian line GL's, but have settled on Rathian's for two reasons. High Sharpness and Full Burst.

The high sharpness lessens deflections, but also shell damage is affected buy low sharpness.

Zorah line is good, but it has that lower sharpness that drops fast.

I don't have any sharpness decorations yet though, but that could help.

I know you can get sharpness protection skills through armor also. But since I mostly solo, I went for max survivability (Guard 5, Guard Up, Constitution, and Artillery. Divine Blessing or special resistances switched in over Artillery depending on the fight or area). I just live off of quick combos ending in Full Burst, and turtle up again.

Got my first augmentation streamstone - ranged for me as a sword user. What's the best final form light bowgun for week one (can only make one gem)? I'm thinking "Karma" but I don't really know what to look out for yet.

What are people's opinion on the switch axe? I am working with that weapon but still early in the game.

Hammer is such an amazing weapon. I have almost stopped using bow, pretty much only using it for Rathalos since I don't wanna bother with flash stuff. Charge blade was really fun but I haven't used it much in HR, just having more fun with hammer.
My fav monster is Bazel, he's just so fun to fight! I also love Odo. Been using Odo armor up until now, when I finally got the amazing Bazel armor.

Still pretty early into HR main story, taking my time with the optionals (almost done with 6*) and doing investigations to keep all my bows and hammers up to date. I'm dragging out the experience since I will probably stop playing after all optionals and the main story is done (and maybe coming back after a bunch of updates).

Hammers are great. I only wish it had a move to sever tails with. Most sever/bladed weapons can deal impact/blunt/KO damage through specific moves, so it would make sense for the hammer to have a move to sever stuff. But it doesn't. So if you need monster tails, you either have to get lucky with investigation rewards or switch to a bladed weapon instead.

Both my brother and my SO use longsword so if I really need a tail I just ask them to join me! :D
But yeah a special severing move would be amazing.

Yeah I want to try other weapons but have yet to choose what to try. Thinking one of the spears or the bow atm. (I've pretty much just done long sword outside training range).

Yep, and it's also good to keep in mind Poison does the exact same thing, though usually weapons with elderseal have much higher attack. I also don't think a monster that's already poisoned can activate their elder nonsense until it goes away.

Then again, Rathian usually has a very high amount of Poison, so you're doing damage on top of negating annoyance...

I realize why I like fighting Kirin so much. It feels like playing an MMO, dodging all his AoE attacks and stuff. And using the LBG against him is so satisfying! Probably my favorite monster at the moment.

It's movement and attack patterns are pretty unique and I have fun trying to chop its horn off, which is also a unique sort of weakpoint being just on his face which is small. It makes you really think about your angle of attack with melee (or at least it makes me think about it).

While it's true that sharpness affects shell damage, that's only the case when you let it reach yellow, which should always be "never". On a side note, they "buffed" shell damage in yellow sharpness(still lowered, just not as much, from what I understand), may be to help the gunlancers who want to try Bludgeoner, who knows.

As for Zorah GL, I think there's a misunderstanding here, green sharpness won't drop any faster than higher sharpness, unless you're consistently hitting the parts of the monster that has high enough defence for green to bounce. I have yet to test how green do in high rank World, but based on my past experience with the series, there shouldn't be much bounce unless you hit the obviously harder parts of the monster, which you shouldn't be aiming for anyway.

As for your GL set, if you don't mind me giving some suggestions...

Guard 5 is a bit of an overkill, I felt. I'm using Guard 1 with my GL(don't judge, only got that one gem so far), and rarely do monster's attack go through my shield, or eat through my stamina, putting me in any kind of danger. Guard up is too situational, and if you're careful, you shouldn't need to block those beams and gas. Not saying Guard up is useless, mind you, but if I was to make a Guard up set, I would specialise the set for that particular monster I need Guard up for, rather than as a general usage set that would see Guard up wasted for most of the fights.

Judging from your post, I would also suggest that you should do reactive blocking instead of turtling, it will help your mobility and stamina regen. Stacking Divine Blessing on top of all those... well..

I would suggest putting a few more offensive skills in, and never take out Artillery unless you don't planned on using shell much, but then... why use gunlance? Offensive skills can also be seen as "survival skills" as you would be able to kill the monsters faster, giving you less reason to rush.

For reference, my current gunlance set is Handicraft 3, Protective Polish, Fast Sharpening 3, Artillery 3 and a couple of small gem slots that allow for some customizations. Handicraft 3 put Rathian GL just into white, Fast Sharpening allows for quick Protective Polish application between attacks, which then locks it in white even if it's just a short bar.

just beat Deviljho, dunno if it's only me, but I've been having a hard time playing MHW on my own. If my friends aren't online, I just don't enjoy it as much. I loved the game, but shortly after beating the game and reaching Rank 46, I don't feel there's much else for me to do. Deviljho was kinda cool but it's slightly disappointing it's the only new thing.

Yeah, my kills aren't the fastest (about 15 min hunts give or take depending on the monster and interruptions). But I hunt stress free.

I do go with more offensive gear when I have a chance to team up with friends that can take some of the agro. But since I mostly solo, I can hardly drink a health potion and choose to keep to small Full Burst combos, because I catch most of the monsters' agro.

I find that with all that Guard and Constitution stacked up, I can tank all of the tougher monsters' physical attacks like Nergi's dives and combos with no worries of guard break, damage, or getting pushed back.

With less Guard or Constitution, my blocks were getting broken through by heavier hitters.

I slot in Divine Blessing for monsters that speed blitz around me, occasionally screwing up my guard direction, like Odogaron.

I know others are better at evading with Gunlance than I am. I just do my little hops for positioning while blocking and countering.

You're right that Guard Up isn't necessary all of the time. I just happen to like how the Uragaan armor looks and it's Part Breaker skill, so I keep some variation of it on anyways.

For sharpening, I usually need to wait for the monster to flee or use my ghille suit haha. I try to get better sharpening or higher shell damage through food, since I haven't had much luck with gem drops yet :/

Finally fought Nergigante. What a disappointment! Had no troubles with it at all and didn't find the fight engaging.
Really liking the hammer I could make from it tho! ...After asking my brother to sever the tail for me and provide some investigations. ;D Gonna use that from now on it seems!

I'm a solo gunlancer too, just with a few more entries experience than you do... Starting from MHP3.

My rule of thumb when building set has always been 1 defensive skill, and the rest are hybrid or offensive skills. Hybrid skills are skills I find to benefit both defensive and offensive: such as Fast Sharpening, Earplugs or Quick Eater. Mostly because if I don't see the monster limping at the 10mins left warning, I get rushy and die, making me feel like an idiot for stacking all those defensive skills only to die. Not saying this is the only way to play, so whatever floats your boat.

As for your monster aggro problem, I've never had it that bad solo, and I solo'd all the way up. Have you tried gathering tailriders on the way to your fight? I'm assuming you've done the palico's side quests. Having more AI partners will get you more chances to breath. If you get a 3rd cat and a monster partner, you basically have a full team of 4. I know monsters tend to chase after the player in solo, but still, having 2 more targets for the monster to RNG choose will probably make your game safer.

Anyone know if the update improved HDR?

I just turned it back on the start screen seemed way better color wise. May be my imagination completely.

Feeling done with the game for now. Did everything possible before the credits roll (where you unlock more stuff that will have to wait for another time). All pets, all ingredients, killing and capturing everything, every optional quest. Then finishing it up with the big boss and credits. Absolutely one of the best games I will play this year. Thanks for all the fun talk in here, it's been a great hangout!

that feel when all you wanted to do was make an ice sword for the bone wyvern but to do that you need to kill a legalos or whatever. Finally killed it after switching to a thunder bow since the long sword was doing nothing to it. Bow is pretty fun tho. I also like how you can de-upgrade weapons with seemingly no drawbacks. That is surprisingly convenient

I was on a self-imposed forums hiatus while I got into this.

Anyway, I've loved my time with the game so far. I wasn't a pure beginner as I'd put 20ish hours each into MH4U and Generations on 3DS. I just couldn't get into them between them being pretty obtuse games and me just being at the end of being able to enjoy gaming on portables (sold the 3DS after Generations).

Between being on a console with nice controls, on the big screen with great HD graphics and the QoL changes they made I got sucked into MHW pretty easily. I'm around 130 hours, HR50 having just finished the Tempered Kirin fight last night (hate that monster, only one I don't have fun fighting). I mostly use Longsword, but also have a bow build I use for Bazelguese and a few others.

I've had a blast, but going to take a break and play some other things until the next content update. I'm not super into farming and it's a long slog up to HR100 for the next assignment unlock. I'd rather work on that with new content rather than grinding the current monsters and areas. Thus I'll wait and see what the April update holds (if God of War doesn't get all my time).

I generally first just try searching for SoS's of investigations of monsters I'm farming. Quicker if there are any and I don't have the one I need in my list vs. figuring out how to get it and find it in the list. I like investigations when farming HR as well as those tend to be people farming for parts and who know the fights, vs. assigned and optional quests where you have more people needing carried and carting/failing more often.

Yeah, investigations are in desperate need of a sorting option. The "Unregistered Investigations" tab, at least, sorts them automatically by difficulty. It's not much, but it's something.

So I finally cracked High Rank last night and I'm surprised by how many more systems continue to be unlocked. It's taken me awhile because I keep grinding parts for weapons so I can try them out on various monsters in order to get a feel for which ones suit my play style the most.

I started with lance and gun lance being my top picks but gunlance didnt feel right, Lance is awesome for the amount of defense it offers but it's kind of boring with the exception of the charge run. I farmed Zora Magdaros and crafted his heavy bow gun and that's been pretty awesome, there is something pretty magical about getting just the right angle for wyvernsnipe on a big monster and seeing all the lovely explosions light them up.

I think I'll probably give Hammer a real try next but it's going to be interesting trying out a weapon with no defense, but I guess that's what the KOs are for.
