Have to disagree. Character designs in MK2/3 looked better to me. Sheeva, for example, has gotten worse with every redesign since she was first introduced.

Nah. The Ninjas looked way better in the older games, design wise.
MK2 "cat ear" ninjas were indeed dope as hell. I spent so much of my adolescence tracing characters from the strategy guides.

The stages were colorful and it was a return to form in a lot of ways. the 3D games were ROUGH. It hasn't aged well, but it was incredibly impressive as a return-to-form attempt.

As a game, it was a huge return to form. I am not arguing against that. I really enjoyed my time with MK9. However, a lot of the character designs were awful. Especially the designs for all the women in that game. Like, that shit was super embarrassing.

Yes, absolutely. Even klassic costumes couldn't save them. Stripper Jade, in particular stands out the most. Poor Skarlett didn't even have an alternate skin, iirc?

Yes. Now if only it had good animation.

They are steadily getting better. They may not be there yet, but each entry has definitely improved upon the last. MK9 had some of the worst faces in all fighting games, now MK11 has the best. The designs in the series used to be some of the most misogynistic, now they are some of the most progressive. If they decide to completely spearhead animations next, Mortal Kombat 12 may end up rivaling the big dogs there too.

I'm here to echo this statement. MK11 is a gorgeous game, and it's actually a lot of fun to play. The fatalities are kind of funny in their unbelievable exaggerations, but after seeing them over and over, I started to feel a little ill. It isn't real of course, but the gratuitous, near pornographic nature of the violence on display as "eye candy" for the player started to nauseate me. You obviously can't have Mortal Kombat without the violence, so rather than asking the game to change, I just have to take the loss and move on. Plenty of other games out there - but still, I'll never get tired of looking at those sweet backgrounds.
You can't have Mortal Kombat without the violence, for sure, but they could shift to being more stylized and suggestive instead of straight photorealistic. Like obviously you've got to have a headrip and stuff, but having a photo realistic rendering of someone's skin being peeled off of their face is several steps beyond that.

I remember my favorite fatality in MK4 was the one where Quan Chi (I think?) ripped off the other character's leg and beat them with it. It wasn't the goriest fatality but it was interesting, funny, and memorable. As the series went on I found that less and less of the fatalities felt like "we came up with one cool idea" and more and more of them were "here's a few pieces of gore porn we threw together." A lot of them aren't even that interesting or memorable, they're JUST gruesome.

So yeah I have to wonder...why? What's the point? It seems like they've found their footing with stylizing their characters well. I hope they find a better, more interesting path to go down with the violence and fatalities rather than "well, we made the skin ripping more realistic." It's not only too extreme, it's sort of boring.

The simplicity is nice. MK11 more or less captured these designs but made the palette swaps more unique.

Old Sheeva is terrible lol. She's just a sexualized 4 armed busty woman, so creative.

This is my only issue with MK11. Jacqui's hair looks like shit in MK11. The model itself is significantly better, but that hair texture is awful. It's like they were trying to make her have dreads instead of cornrolls, but the actual hair looks nothing like dreads. The hair closer to her scalp look pressed and straightened, while the out of the dreads look incrediblely "soft" and equally looks bad in motion.

I also don't like how wide her face is in MK11. It's so incredibly distracting. I really don't like how Jacqui looks in this game. She was one of my favorite characters in MKX and I can't get over how bizarre she looks in this game. AND as someone who has dreads, the hair model looks like complete trash. While Eddie Gordo's isn't perfect, it's a step in the right direction for somewhat accurate black hair:

I prefered the first games where the characters were much more distinct than the scenery. Now it's harder to see them clearly.

It definitely has. MK has always been a C-tier fighting game series for me. I enjoyed it on a surface level for the cheese and 2D violence. I liked some characters fine, but they were always just alright at best for me. Unlike other fighting game franchises there's never been a character or design I've downright loved like crazy (like Gief, Menat, King, Yoshimitsu, Siegfried, Hilde or Last Blade Hibiki). Although I do really like how Ermac looks in 9 and X.

That all changed when we first saw Skarlet in MK11. Man, what an incredibly jump from one of the dumbest designs in modern fighting games to one of the best. It's instantly one of my all-time favorite designs. I also like her desert ninja design too and her short hair look with that outfit quite a lot. But man that demo design. And that enthusiasm has transferred to the rest of the cast. I really like how most of the cast looks in this, with Frost, Kabal and Noob being stand outs. The new art style has done wonders for my image of MK. It even makes me appreciate outfits from previous games that I just thought were just okay, like the costumes coming with Aftermath.

It's just a shame that outfit that sold me isn't actually useable and is only found in her ending. Not sure what's up with that. I still haven't bought MK11 as a result (although word on the Krypt grind didn't help either). I hope they rectify that before they end support.

It truly is an absolutely gorgeous game. Every reveal trailer i thought 'eventually we will get a bad/boring looking design' and every character just looked superb and doubled up by the fact they all had interesting move sets.

Really love the game, even with its slower pace.

I wish i could say the same about tekken..

As someone who absolutely adores Tekken, I have always hated the vast majority of the charactrer designs. Atleast the Tekken 1-3 were subdued. 7's an offence to art and fashion.

Imagine Tekkens Gameplay with MK style graphics and character designs. Fuck Tekken X Street Fighter we need Tekken X MK

They DO NOT look the same here though. The in-game model looks way more bloated:

That was not a good translation then, the real life model face is more narrow than the in-game model.

Oh wow she is stunning, they must have changed her because they really dont look that similar

Looks perfect to me when I look at pictures that don't have tons of makeup that are contouring and obscuring some of her more african american features.

I turned the game on the other night and was on Chapter 3 in the story mode... on easy cuz I suck at all MK games... except MK3 Sektor.

I played Monday and Tuesday and beat the game... it reminded a lot of Avengers Endgame, but was a decent story. And I am amazed by the detail and look of the places the story goes to... great graphics in my eyes.

The last boss timekeeper bitch beat me 4 times and I finally beat her.

I don't really care for most of the designs. A lot of them are overdone with too many layers, straps, etc. They actually remind me of a lot of MCU designs. I liked the MK1/2 mostly simplistic looks. I'm just glad they got away from the super tacky stuff like string bikinis and whatnot

Character designs and artwork are definitely top notch but a it's a shame the gameplay took a nose dive.

Coming from MK9/MKX to MK11 is really sad seeing how limited the game became over the years
