The film has opened internationally and reviews are starting to come in.

And this is where the reboot wins the original, hands down, with the amazing fight sequences that shows you what happens when you put real-life martial artists and action choreographers in the mix. Hong Kong action cinema has had it since the 80s, and Hollywood is just learning.

To his credit, McQuoid understands and honours these video game origins, and includes memorable lines of dialogue and signature fight moves throughout. The fight choreography achieves an impressive synergy between elaborate martial arts and super-powered effects work, which is aided significantly by the natural abilities of the film's adept and athletic cast.

The amount of work that went into the choreography and stunt work is beyond impressive. You can see it's a group of martial artists performing their own fights on the screen and not just quick hack-slash edits or CG doubles. You'll even forgive the ridiculousness of the story's plot twists, because the action leaves you satisfied.

Note: I scanned the reviews looking for info specifically on the fight scenes and choreography since that's what I'm here for. Outlook: EXCELLENT!

I had high hopes for the fight scenes given it's a $50+ million movie whose most famous cast member is Hiroyuki Sanada. HYYYYYYYPE!

I have an fb friend that lives in thailand who saw it and said it was dope. I didn't read all his impressions cause i didn't want to get spoiled, but he said he didn't like kano (maybe just cause his character is meant to be unlikeable)
His friend that watched it with him said "it was worth having to quarantine after" since Thailand is facing another lockdown. i'd say that's a glowing endorsement?

I can see this sitting in the 70s...maybe low 80s because I'm an optimistic fanboy.

But even still, I think it'll be sitting in the fresh rating. I can't wait for this shit.

And Smoke's friend, so he's probably not gonna be a thing until the sequel.

I don't know if there's anything in the movie that foreshadows Cage being in a sequel (haven't seen it yet) but my current headcannon is:

Ten years after the events of the MK1 movie, Cole Slaw (who is reknown for his sweet exploited by Dana White UFC fighting skills) gets hired to play the bad guy/hired goon of bad guy in a Johnny Cage movie. Raiden returns to inform Cole Onoscopy that he's needed once again to save Earthrealm this time from Shao Kahn. Angry and suspicious of Cole Nelsanders's claims that he can't finish Ninja Mime III because of "a life or death manner", he surveils Kole and Raiden leading to him being unintentionally roped into the war against Shao Kahn.

Paint me fucking shocked.

Unless those are sketch reviews like when studios give to friendly outlets to create a false early impression of thier film, thats a good sign

Is it just because the plot itself is cheesy and they take it too seriously? Do the actors suck? Fight scenes are actually bad?

I guess my first question would just be if you could elaborate a bit more on your issues without spoiling?

Didnt like it at all, some really bad choices for actors and cheesy scenes.

The fight scenes were nice though, if you really LOVE MK and have an hour and a half to waste check it out.

With pleasure:

The acting is really bad and the only actor I could recognize is the one playing Scorpion.
The cheesy part comes from the quotes of the videogame being thrown randomly like "Flawless victory", "XXX wins" etc, some times when a quote like them is said the actor would stare at the camera which makes it even more cheesy lol.
The fights are like a 2021 action movie fight scene, full of cuts and its hard to follow whats going on...they are kinda brief though? So nothing extremly bad but nothing memorable either.
The spoiler part below details 2 of the characters and their role in the movie (not plot wise but still):

Kano is used as the comedy character during the first half, he does all the jokes and acts like an asshole...eventually you get tired of him after a while, the main character as far as I know isn't in one of the games but even if they had room to build him as someone interesting they fail, his sub plot is just "I have to protect my family"

Well that's simultaneously more disappointing than I expected despite having serious reservations given this is directed by a first time director who has only made commercials prior to this.

Seems like they basically tried to make a grounded movie but including the most cheesy parts of the game as fan service....which just makes it cringe when you are being self serious.

But hearing that even the fight scenes are forgettable is dissapointing. Seemed that was poised to be the one thing that would make the movie tolerable.

Feels like this will be an HBOMax view for me then. If i got the vaccine in time I thought maybe I'd wait and make this my return movie, but unless you both are extreme outliers, sounds like it's not worth the extra money.

Gotta say, as hype as the day and date HBOMax stuff was supposed to be, everything they've released besides Judas and the Black Messiah has been passable(Kong vs Godzilla) to disappointing(WW84, now seemingly this).
