The Matrix, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Bringing Out the Dead, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Fight Club, The Limey, Office Space, Being John Malkovich, Election, The Straight Story, The Blair Witch Project, Go, Galaxy Quest, The Green Mile, The Iron Giant, The Insider, Sleepy Hollow, The Virgin Suicides, Toy Story 2 etc etc

That's not even mentioning all the great stuff that didn't get a wide release like Ratcatcher, All About My Mother, Audition and Kikujiro. Just a ridiculous year for movies.

Hey, yes I did.

Seriously though, it was as great time for movies and it definitely felt like a great time for movies, especially if you were interested in the more innovative films you list in the OP, like the Limey and Being John Malkovich (god, Jonze, come back)

Star Wars Episode I trailer was amazingly hype as a cinema experience', It's shame they never released the full movie

I remember going to the midnight showing of Episode 1 in college. The event was way more fun than the movie.

We knew while it was happening that it was a great year, though. I was working in a theater then and we were constantly hyped about new releases. Same thing happened in 2007. It's hard not to notice when a flood of awesome movies are coming out.

Fantastic year for film. Being John Malkovich, Matrix, and Ghost Dog are just terrific. Rewatched The Insider the other night, might be my favourite Mann film.

and EdTv...which was not a great movie, but by buying a ticket for that, I was able to sneak into the Matrix. :)

I was only 15 at the time lol

I'm pretty sure I watched more movies in a theater that year than any other by far.

I knew what we had back in 1999 and never took it for granted. 2007 was a similar year of great movies but not to the same breadth and variation.

People in 1999 recognized it as a great year for film... there were magazine covers and stuff declaring it the best year since the 1970s and arguably 1939.

I think it's because we just came off of 1998:

The Big Lebowski, Bullworth, The Thin Red Line, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Half Baked, Dirty Work, Rushmore, Dark City, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Saving Private Ryan, Lethal Weapon 4, Truman Show, Desperate Measures, X-Files Movie, BASEketball, Blade, Dead Man On Campus, Wrongfully Accused, Very Bad Things, Enemy of the State, Vampires, Velvet Goldmine, Rush Hour, Godzilla, Phantoms...I could keep going here.

I mean, 1999 kind of sucked in comparison if I'm being honest.

It's remained my favourite film year after all this time. The Matrix was my obsession for years.

Missing from the thread: Three Kings!

I was just thinking the past few days on how amazing '99 was for movies. Don't forget The Talented Mr. Ripley.

For Hollywood, yeah perhaps 1999 is one of the greatest year, although the films listed aren't my all time favourites Although The Insider, TS2 and The Iron Giant are up there, I might prefer ones in 1994.

It merges a bit with year 2000 for me, which is one of the greatest year for Chinese language cinema with In the Mood for Love, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Yi Yi all in that year.

I think the massive franchises start right after that with Lotr and Harry Potter taking off.

I mean 1999 was massively hyped up for movies because of Star Wars Episode I ... so in that sense we kinda knew it was going to be a massive, memorable year.

But it wasn't for the movies that were expected.

No one going into 1999 was really that hyped about The Matrix, no one thought Episode I would divide audiences.

Lots of movies came out of nowhere to build massive word of mouth too -- American Pie, Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense weren't really on anyone's radar.

So that's why Morpheus said 1999 was the pinnacle of human civilization.

Quite a few of movies I consider all timers released in 1999, it was a great time to be going to the cinema on the regular.

This thread makes me realize just how much I used to go to theatres. In addition to all the big Hollywood stuff, my wife and I would go to Tinseltown downtown and watch so many random good foreign films back then. I don't remember which ones would be from 1999 or the early '00s now, though.
