My dutch friend said that the Netherlands should reannex New York City.

He said NYC could be the 13th Provinces of the Netherlands.

I would love it. It would also improve the cityscape due to our incompetent and car-obsessed mayor.

He's right about the American government but also right about the NYS government, which runs the MTA horribly.

So more white folks running the show and even more detached from the day to day situation than the ones we already have. Nothing agaisnt the Dutch either but just sounds like another dumb idea instead of some great opportunity.

Dutchman here (who has visited NYC numerous times) I'm all for it. I do want a rollback to Dutch names tho!

Funny thing, it would increase our pupulation +- 17 million to +- 25 million, hehe.

I don't think the Dutch would want the very Americanized New Amsterdam with a bunch of people that hate socialism, will fight tooth and nail to lower taxes, and love guns.

The dirty secret is Americans do not need to pay more taxes to get universal healthcare and other social programs.

We just are so terrible at containing costs that we cannot have nice things. If we got our spending on health care down to Dutch levels (which are pretty bad on their own) the US governments already spend enough on Health Care to provide universal coverage.

If your friend also wants a permanent right-liberal majority in the States-General, sure. Most city residents wouldn't vote PvdA, Green, or SP. And because there are so many of us, we would determine the fate of every subsequent election. Fun fantasy for five minutes, though.
