I live with my parents right now because my college is literally down the road from their apartment and I can't even right now. My dad (avid republican and trump voter--somehow he manages to reconcile the cognitive dissonance between this and marrying a black woman) bought this dumbass shirt that's a "parody" (more like travesty in the classical sense) of the Godfather logo that says "The Donald" on it. He wanted us to go out today but he insisted on wearing the shirt and I was like "I'm not going out with the family if you're wearing this white supremacist shirt" and he's all pissed at me now and complaining about today's generation doesn't "debate" and just shuts everyone with a different opinion down.

I'm not in the wrong here, am I? Like, I sure as fuck don't want people to see him wearing that shirt and me next to him like I agree with it or something. I live in Texas, but in a liberal urban city with a huge Hispanic population so wearing that shirt is just extremely off-putting and tacky/crass as fuck.

So debate him once then. He's your dad, not an internet troll. Maybe something will get through, idk.

The fact that he's framed the situation as "kids these days" tells me there's very little chance of reasonable discussion with him. It makes his "debate" comment all the more ironic, but I'm sure that would be lost on him.

Yup.

yep, i agree with this.

i am curious though, how does your mom feel about him being a trump supporter?
My mom is completely like, actually mentally ill and believes that the earth is flat and that globalist elite jews run the world (and are also satan-worshipping liars and that the real Hebrews are black people), so trying to discern any kind of logical political stance from her is...tricky.

I mean, maybe there is some truth to no one wanting to debate anymore. But I agree that I sure as hell wouldn't want to be seen in public with someone wearing Donald Trump apparel. Also when your (your dad's) guy probably has really world ties to the mob and criminal activities, a Godfather parody shirt isn't really the best way to kick off your "debate".

Disown him and hit the gym.

"LOL Trump is as badass as the Godfather! He has all those liberals eating out of his hand!"
"What!? How dare you insinuate Trump be involved in a massive criminal conspiracy!!"

You're not wrong. Keep talking to him. He might listen at some point since you're family. Other than that all you can do is wait out his nonsense until you're out of the house.

He wants to debate you? I don't mention politics in front of my old man munch because he starts crying and whining like a child when I call him out on his bullshit love fest with Trump. But if he brings up the word debate, it's on him.

Unfortunately living situations can get a bit more difficult if you're living with them and they can't handle things like an adult.

Either you fight the good fight and debate everything thing and criticize everything, with well researched irrefutable data

or

just make it clear to your parents no politics around you.

edit: My mom is conservative but mostly in the traditional Christianity values kind of way,so more religious than political. I crush her spirit at every opportunity.

Nah, dude's too far gone, and any time I try to talk to him he's just like "I'm a conservative because I have life experiences, lol, dumbass socialist millennials like you just want free handouts and don't know anything about the real world!"

This man also exults capitalism at every instance while telling me every day that his job is miserable and literally killing him so

Bide your time and then get the fuck outta there.

My mom started doing this whole "the Mexicans shouldn't be here, welfare is a crock of shit and the black people should be working and not having like fifty kids" schtick so I saw the writing on the wall and left.

Your dad is an idiot. You can't help but love your parents but sometimes that's just the reality.

And of course you're not in the wrong.

Couldn't you guys just.. I don't know.. not talk about politics? I don't even remember talking to my pops about political stuff ever.

Expect a lot of "time to cut him out of your life replies" though.

By all means disagree with him, but refusing to go out in public with him seems kinda petty. His beliefs aren't automatically yours..

If you ignore the Godfather angle then that's a pretty accurate shirt. He is a puppet, after all.

Choices:
- Hanging out with son
- Wearing racist shirt

If he's having a hard time with this, then I'm afraid your dad may be too far gone.

My dad is just a hilarious mess of contradictions, I could talk about it all day. This man thinks They Live is pro-capitalist.

Yeah Republicans usually lack intellectually honesty and actively avoid critical thinking. They Live being pro capitalism is like exactly the surface level thinking of typical republicans.

Good for you to not be complicit is your dads bullshit

Your dad sounds like he sucks. I know you live with him, but damn.. try to keep political discussions to a minimum if you want to retain your sanity.

They dont have to talk about politics when his father is proudly wearing them. heres a stupid over the top example , dad is right/son is left, they decide to not talk about politics, they go out for a picnic and dad decides to wear a ghost costume with a pointed hat and a red armband. NO POLITICS :P
again this is a stupid over the top explanation here.

Sorry to hear that OP. I'd say keep your head low, mouth quiet, and finish college and try and get a job.

Depending on the time of person your dad is, maybe you can talk him/explain to him why you don't like Trump. But it's hard to say without knowing the type of person he is.

With that said, just see how the rest of this year goes Trump-wise. Maybe he'll fall into deep shit, maybe he won't. Could help your situation out depending how everything plays out.

I had a family member out themselves as being up this sort of alley and I'm not even American.

Try to emotionally distance yourself from it and calmly find other things to do. You won't get through to him. He's of another time and 'The Donald' is his best way to feel like he has a right to yell at the reality his generation created while distancing themselves from any guilt. They don't know any better and are often extremely uneducated in politics.

I'm sorry. I am confident you will make peace with this.

That shirt is actually a pretty serious self-own, since it suggests Trump is both a puppet and a criminal.

Make a move on your mother, and turn your dad into one of the cucks he disdains. The next morning make your mom some alphacado toast while your dad cries into his betareakfast.

today's generation doesn't "debate" and just shuts everyone with a different opinion down.

Have you two had actual debates over Trump and republicans or do you immediately throw the words "racist" and "white supremacist" around? Even as someone who isn't republican I do see that quite often, including this forum. If someone says they have conservative values "racist" tends to pop into a lot of peoples minds and it ends the conversation.
