Finally 1440p... now if games can start supporting that, that'd be great.

1440p! About time

I wonder what gamelists are? Folders?
Sounds like it's basically that

  • Gamelists
    • In your Game Library you can now create gamelists, which make organizing your games even easier.
    • To start, go to the [Your Collection] tab and select [Create Gamelist]. Choose games to add to your gamelist, then decide what to name it.
    • You can have up to 15 gamelists and 100 games per gamelist. All games under the "Your Collection" tab of your Game Library can be added to a gamelist, including disc, digital and streaming titles.*** You can also add the same game to multiple gamelists.

I'm honestly surprised Sony is finally relenting on providing a 1440p output option. I was sure they weren't gonna support any resolutions that their own TVs didn't support natively.

OR
I don't own a PS5 yet, but as the owner of a 1440p monitor who has owned all previous PlayStations, this makes me happy

Gamelists is aaaaaaaaalmost perfect, but it's only accessible from the library and not the home screen?

Great improvements! 1440p is a surprise but given that Sony now makes gaming monitors it makes sense.

The game lists looks as if it would be still fairly buried away in game library looking at that screenshot…rather than the dashboard like the ps4?

1440p resolution won't support VRR

This is great, Sony is adding stuff that should be day one but is good to see that they are listening people.

Also, important part is that 1440p doesn't support VRR
**1440p compatible TV or PC monitor required. Results may vary depending on the game being played. Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.

1440p monitor is back on the menu
This is hopefully good news for people with older HDTVs as well.
There are 2-3 generations where 1440p120 was supported, before HDMI 2.1 added 4K120.
But it was not officially listed in the EDID for most, so you'd need an option to force that, or an "EDID manager" device between the PS5 and TV to tell it that 1440p120 is supported.

VRR not supported for 1440p, though! I guess it has to do with the HDMI VRR standard…

I can't be the only person who has nowhere near enough harddrive space for folders to be necessary… like great I can put all the seven games that fit on my console into a folder.

I'm kidding of course, it's great that they're finally bringing this in.

1440p HDMI Video Output
  • The PS5 beta introduces support for 1440p HDMI video output, enabling players to choose an additional visual setting on compatible PC monitors and TVs.**
  • If the game you're playing supports 1440p rendering you can experience native 1440p output on your display.
  • Or, if you're playing a game with a higher native resolution like 4K, then you may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling down to 1440p output.
  • You can check if your HDMI device is compatible by selecting "Test 1440p Output" under "Screen and Video" options within system settings.
  • Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.

Easier Access to In-progress Activities
  • When resuming a game, in-progress activities are often shown prominently at the top of the game hub to make it as easy and as fast as possible to get back to where you left off.

Mentioned in the PS OT but it's great they're increasing visibility of Activity Cards. It's one of the best features on PS5 that's oddly very obscured and not intuitive to find.

Hell yeah. 1440 alone makes this a significant update on its own.
EDIT: just saw the updated photos. Pretty fucking great all around.

Yes, this is hilarious xD. I don't know if this is a limitation of the HDMI specification or is something that Sony is not able to implement (or to implement yet), but they should try to achieve VRR on 1440p because is one of the features that will make people switch over to 1440p from 1080p.

Whoa, wasn't expecting Playstation to EVER support QHD at this point, but it's great to see.

Be nice if they were to add support for Freesync now too, since there are probably a good number of gamers using HDMI 2.0 monitors with 1440p resolution and only do Freesync and not HDMI forum VRR.

fake edit:
Also, important part is that 1440p doesn't support VRR
Well, shit. I wasn't holding my breath anyways, lol.

Yep that will come in handy. Btw, do you all want me to just add threadmarks for important bits or put it all into the first post? The latter could make the post pretty big 😅
