I'm just pulling the first google-able article on the topic, I'm not an expert on the kilowatt hour usage of every industry, I just pulled an example of a similar expenditure I know a minor amount about - Instead of trading articles back and forth and refuting them can we just agree that yes, Gaming PCs are a wasteful expenditure, similar to the meat industry or parts of the fashion industry? Based on that, I'd like to point out to the intense and scrupulous discussion on Bitcoin/Ethereum power usage seems never to be pointed at these or other industries that everyday people are using, that could be focused on within this forum if wanted.

Instead, for whatever reason, this forum seems hyper-fixated on cryptocurrencies and NFTs in their environmental usage, which to me seems more a byproduct of an overall hatred of this technology on this forum (which I would also agree with basically every broad criticism of Ethereum and Bitcoin and the overall late stage capitalism of NFT and Cryptocurrency culture). For me personally, I was also a "hater" of Cryptocurrencies and NFTs as a whole until this year (and would still be a hater of what this thread is actually about, fraudulent and scam artists in the cryptocurrency/NFT environment, I've been personally scammed a few times myself), but I've found that in select industries (like the adult industry), the technology is actually needed/has a legitimate use case, and also that there are actual artists in the space who are outside of the pfp NFT scene. I work at this particular juncture and find myself at odds with these topics since I am trying to run a business with ethical decision making included from a top down perspective.

Basically anytime I post anything in any topic like this I get about 500 accusations of being a horrible person, which is still happening literally right now, even though I'm not insulting anyone, acting quite reasonable, and am just stating what is my experience with this technology and industry. Honestly, it's just draining to my mental health being talked to like this for hours on end, especially when I personally think I am trying my damnedest to make a cryptocurrency-based company not all the terrible things this thread is talking about.

The porn industry actually is basically the first industry to widely adopt cryptocurrency; examples are the following:

  • Pornhub has switched to cryptocurrency-only payments on it's website after Visa and Mastercard removed their payment processors from the website
  • Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been used as payment processors for about 5 years in the adult industry, and is essentially the first industry to widely adopt cryptocurrency as a payment method
  • Onlyfans has recently added Web 3 technology for adding NFTs directly to it's platform
  • Playboy has created it's own line of NFTs and is planning to create it's own Metaverse
  • Multiple cryptocurrencies have been active in the adult industry for years, such as Spankchain
  • Pretty much every major adult website accepts cryptocurrencies for payments
  • Pocketstars has launched it's own cryptocurrency, and even has a cryptocurrency-only pornographic website
  • Multiple large pornstars have their own NFT Collections, such as Mia Malkova, Stormy Daniels, Abella Danger etc
  • Pornstars have been very active in cryptocurrency communities, and there are roughly 20-30 active adult-related cryptocurrencies
  • Multiple other adult websites and brands will be adding cryptocurrency payments, NFT minters and metaverse access in the next year
The adult industry generally has been forward thinking with technology (like with VHS, on-demand videos, streaming etc), so it's not really that notable that they would be also be ahead of other industries with this technology. I think by the end of 2022 you will see a wide variety of adult websites in the cryptocurrency, NFT and metaverse spaces.

The main reasons for the Adult Industry needing cryptocurrency/NFTs as a whole is that traditional payment processors are abandoning the industry as a whole - American Express does not allow adult purchases whatsoever, and Visa and Mastercard have extremely difficult-to-follow regulations imposed on every adult website using their payment processors, which is why OnlyFans briefly announced it's removing adult content, and why Pornhub has no credit card access at all. Mastercard in particular has conservative investors that are actively targeting the adult industry and making it difficult for any adult website to use traditional fiat pay vendors. It's also actually close to impossible for adult companies to get traditional health insurance benefits in the US, and to get basically any kind of traditional funding from venture capitalism or bank loans. Payments to adult creators are also regularly frozen by both banks and adult websites, with creators never getting their money back with no answer back why. This is currently happening with OnlyFans. Because of all of this, the adult industry is actually rapidly looking into alternative sources of capital, and cryptocurrencies have been one of the big avenues they have looked towards to solve these problems. I'm really deep in conversations in the adult industry about all of this, and there is legitimate solutions to the adult industry by using both cryptocurrencies, NFTs and the metaverse as alternative means of creating and selling content.

I am expecting people to still tell me I'm ethically terrible or that nothing I am saying makes sense but the above to me is a reasonable and thought out perspective on why what I in particular do is actually meaningful, and how it feels to be told you are terrible over and over

How am I stealing anything? I've been very specific in telling my processes for removing cases of fraud on my own marketplace

Lmao @ "Spankchain"
What a garbage money grab.

So the idea of an average NFT enjoyer is that you buy link to a receipt for a hideous disgusting wretched picture of a cartoon monkey. and then what? wait untill someone offers you $20k for it?

Well first you have to sell it to your alt accounts a couple times to drive up it's perceived value. Theeeeen you wait for the sucker who will pay $20k for it.

lol at the mods handing out bans for the correct response to a pedant defending profiteering off of art theft

100% accurate. truly embarrassing, but also unsurprising given past crypto threads. the biggest problem is that since there is a financial incentive to get other people in the marketplace (a pyramid shaped incentive) it's impossible to know who is arguing in good faith and who is "spreading the good word", trying to increase their own wealth by converting others.

What does this wall of text have to do with NFTs, much less the topic of the thread? I could use any number of cryptos to pay sex workers without touching anything NFT-related.

It's wild that this thread was made, a literal scammer came into it and made the thread about them (which, weird move) and then complained that the thread they had now made about them was negative towards their scam and people got banned for calling them out.

They're mentioning it because they run a site that sells porn NFTs.

I feel like IRS would definitely be coming for that ass if you claim your own wallet transfer as a sale lol.
If the IRS ever decide to get serious about those shenanigans I'm sure they will have a very easy time to find and prove fraud.
There are ways to hide your tracks, to a degree at least, but from what I've seen many people in the NFT space aren't even taking the most basic steps to try to do that.

saying "i'm trying to run a crypto/nft business that isn't as terrible as all the others" is like saying "i'm trying to run a candy store that doesn't sell candy". it's never going to work. the shit is inherently bad, inherently broken. just say you're in it to make your money and then cash out. at least be honest.

Yeah this thread got derailed massively... But I don't want to ask for a lock because despite that these are conversations we need to have here, and policies that need to be called out amongst the staff.

So the current tech companies have problems of shitty customer support and content moderation. So crypto enthusiasts push their tech as a new era of empowering users with digital ownership and decentralization, but yet here we are back dealing with the same problems.

But hey, they get to call themselves a web3 company so that's different.

Honestly I wasn't trying to drag this out to be about me, but I can't help but defend myself when getting dogpiled - I came into this thread just responding to the title and have basically been yelled at every possible way, to me it just feels like this forum would just prefer if I just burnt the company I acquired to the ground and kill myself rather than try to do anything meaningful with it. Honestly I'm just super fucking depressed because it feels like nothing I can do can get people to stop quoting me and calling me names - I feel personally pretty harassed just for working the job I have and it's literally never ending and fatiguing to keep answering every existentially angered person at me for things that I'm not in control of or interacting with really

I'm probably just going to continually post less and less in this community even though I've been in it since like 2004, you guys literally saved me from a suicide attempt once back in like 2011 but I feel like a thread like this just pushes me back to feeling shitty and depressed rather than actually helping me like this community used to do - I don't know where the sense of empathy went from this community

Like I'm personally nonbinary, bisexual, a rape survivor etc and don't have anything to do with whatever stereotypes there are for people into crypto communities. I'm not a crypto bro, I'm not a scam artist, I'm literally running an inclusive community for sex workers that gives away about 80-90% of its money from NFTs back to the community. I really don't like being told I'm evil, a scumbag, a scam artist repeatedly, I don't think I am that - but I feel awful that people truly see me this way and am backing out of this thread because I'm gonna end up suicidal if I keep answering you guys.

I'm not even sold on "potential" uses personally, but here are some concise points on it.

You keep trying to make this about you when it's about NFTs and all the problems that come with them. There's no protection in place for the artists who's livelihoods are being threatened here. You claimed you're involved in writing a code attached to nfts that will prevent this form of theft yet you go on and on about the business you're involved in and ask for some sort of sympathy. I don't know why you're inserting yourself into the topic at hand or why you're trying to defend the use of nfts at all when you claim you're struggling like this. Do you realize the industry you're in has thrived without attaching itself to this terrible idea. It's all about making money right? You don't need nfts to do that.

Good, I hope all the nftbros take this same stance. You guys are not welcomed in the gaming community or any other community.

I'll say this calm and rationally as possible, as to avoid a hostility ban:

You just said YOU acquired the company...would that not mean YOU can steer it into doing something else, and that seems a lot different than just "working the job you have"? The reasons NFTs are awful have been proven a million times over. NFTs are a scam and horrible for the environment. To see proof of that you need look no further than all the people buying these jpegs of ugly monkeys. The fact that you're nonbinary, bisexual, and a rape survivor has absolutely NOTHING to do with NFTs, and no one is taking any of that away from you by telling you why NFTs are terrible and a scam.

Sadsic the fact that you're using SW as a ''shield'' is fucking disgusting but not surprising considering how disconnected from reality crypto people such a yourself are
Both of these posts being deemed ban-worthy is embarrassing. Come on.

Era recently changed owners.
There would be no difference here. Pretty sure I recall Cerium threadmarking some pro-NFT posts in a thread from back in October.
