This either means there is no big story or they spent 20 hours and still not done with getting all the characters.
Bethesda should take some notes on this for their next single player Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Venturebeat said:Typical stories have a three act structure. You know — beginning, middle, and the end. The first 10 hours or so of Octopath Traveler is like a parade of only first acts. Just as you become invested in one story, you suddenly jump to another. Like I said, I'm eight hours in, and I've only recruited six of the eight heroes.
And these stories, at least in these first chapters, never mingle. Since any character can be your first, each one has to proceed as if it's a solo adventure. So, if you go up to a new character and you already have a party of three adventurers, your previous heroes will show up in battles, but they have no impact on the story.
So far, this feels disjointed. The weirdest example came when I was recruiting a thief. His introduction story included a bit where he rejected others who wanted to join him on his latest job, saying he works alone. But then he accepts the help of my party. Keep in mind that this is a party that includes a priestess, a scholar, and an honorable hunter. These three suddenly decide to help a thief steal something for pure profit.
Honestly it sounds pretty bad from listening to the GameXplain vid. No interactions between characters, no plot involving them all etc. Gameplay doesnt evolve. Least i'll have the amazing OST.
Previews looks overwhelmingly positive but is the game worth $60?
so much /s I shouldn't even write it
Seriously i do not want to engage in this "Not a $60 game" discussion but this just feels so cheap. The game looks gorgeous, sounds amazing, has some interesting ideas, but it doesnt look like theyve bothered to bring it all together.Yes, it's especially weird because when you're doing a chapter for a given character, only that character shows up in all the cut-scenes, making it feel like they're traveling solo. The other characters only show up in battle and then in those optional one-on-one banter scenes.
Eh, I don't see how they are related, that's a design choice.Seriously i do not want to engage in this "Not a $60 game" discussion but this just feels so cheap. The game looks gorgeous, sounds amazing, has some interesting ideas, but it doesnt look like theyve bothered to bring it all together.
Look, as one of the biggest FFVI fans on the planet, let me just say that from what I've played so far I'd advise relaxing with the "all time classic" stuff. At least wait for proper reviews -- ones from people who don't worship at the altar of hyperbole. It's not that this is a bad game, but the repetitive structure and lack of party interaction are no small thing.

Venturebeat is a little more negative but it sounds like they've only played a few hours (only have 6 of the 8 characters so far)

The reason to go around and do all eight characters is because the Chapter 2 level recommendations are in the 20s while you'll be around level 10-12 after getting four. So you can either grind for levels or you can go do all eight Chapter 1s.wait a sec, developers said that you can decide to do stories for all 8 characters in one run or not and focus on few characters instead.
So if the reviewer decided to have them all, he/she should have expected that parade.
Kotaku trashed Xenoblade 2, and yet the game was amazing. What did you think of Xenoblade 2?Damn. Expecting a lot less now, but I've already paid off most of my preorder so it's not enough to cancel. These reviews are going to be very... interesting, though, I can tell already.

this excites me and makes me nervous. If they can bring it all together and wrap all 8 stories up it will be awesomeI have all the characters and am about 20 hours in, and there's no over-arching story (yet?). It's eight different stories. The characters only interact via one-on-one optional "banter" scenes, sort of like a Tales game.

You're quoting the person who trashed it.Kotaku trashed Xenoblade 2, and yet the game was amazing. So...
Just watched the entire Gamespot video and it confirms many of my fears. however i think the pros outweight the cons.
Do you like it more than xenoblade 2?Look, as one of the biggest FFVI fans on the planet, let me just say that from what I've played so far I'd advise relaxing with the "all time classic" stuff. That's why I don't care about such opinions. No offence.

Yes, Xenoblade 2 is garbage. I like Octopath from what I've played so far - it's just not striking me as an all-time classic or much like FFVI in any way. It's more like a new SaGa game.
Just that Jason hates that one too lol, and general reception disagrees with him on that.I haven't really played it enough to get a good impression (I will one day), but I'm not sure what that game has to do with Octopath.
I played last year's demo but didn't make that connection lolDid you play the demo? The Break system is basically Push Turn.
Weird to see people complaining about no overarching story or much interaction when they just reached chapter 2 and are the beginning of the game.
Playing all origin Storys first means you get to know the characters and their ambitions ...after that there is still plenty of time for more interaction between them. Looking forward to the reviews next week.
Holy shit, you probably arent talking about Ys Origin, but thats what im trying to finish before next Friday rolls around. Are they discovering the saga series ? : P
I can't wait for the Scarlet Grace previews ha ha.
I'm kinda hyped for Octopath though.
I dont' think I can (re) finish Ys on time, so I'll have find a way...
So people have to go through 20 hours just to get some party interaction?Weird to see people complaining about no overarching story or much interaction when they just reached chapter 2 and are the beginning of the game.
